Comments about Mapex Horizon HZB Big City 5-Piece Shell Pack:

Just purchased one of these in the cherry red finish. I was looking for a small protable kit that I didn't have to worry too much about getting dinged up, or damaged. (My other kits are high end Ludwig Classic maple). Right out of the box these drums sound pretty amazing. I did switch out the bass drum head for an Evans E-mad. The head out of the box was surprisingly good. The E-mad head made it amazing. This little kick drum is absolutely thunderous tuned low with this head. It could probably easily keep up with my 18x22 classic maple kick. The toms sound great even with the factory heads. I'm sure they'd sound better with some higher end heads on them. The one drum I thought was lacking was the snare. It did improve with a little tweaking, but still doesn't have the warmth of a maple snare, or brass. Still, not a bad little snare at all. The hardware on the kit, lugs, bass drum spurs, tom legs, tom mount are all pretty nice. I used to own the Gretsch Catalina Club jazz kit and the hardware on that kit is garbage. This is actually pretty nice. The bass drum claws are padded with rubber so the won't scar the hoops. The lugs are all smooth and have a nice satin finish on them. All the wing nuts on the tom holders, tom legs etc...turn without binding, a problem I had with the Gretsch model. The finish itself is really nice. It's as good, or better than what I've seen on some higher priced kits. I might even go so far as to say it's beautiful. I haven't played it in a band setting yet, but can't wait to blow my band mates away with this little beauty. I highly recommend this kit to anyone on a budget and even those who aren't. After playing it I sort of feel stupid having spent so much on my Classic Maple Ludwig kits.

      sweet little kit

Comments about Mapex Horizon HZB Big City 5-Piece Shell Pack:

ive come to really enjoy this kit. gotta put new heads on tops but the resonant work just great. i play a lot of cramped gigs so this is obviously a space saver for those smaller rooms where you just cant play very loud. ive played it at bigger rooms too and it works just fine, except a bass drum mic is necessary. its my first birch drumset, im very pleased with the tone, color, sizes, and hardware. i reccomend this for anyone who needs a little kit to play smaller places with. i play funk/jazz/soul/very little blues.
