Mapex takes intermediate drums up several notches.
New for 2009, the Mapex Meridian Maple SRO 5-Piece Shell Pack ushers in a new level of quality and functionality in mid-level, all maple drum sets. With a completely new lug and redesigned lightweight Isolated Tom Mounting System, the Meridian Series features bright and resonant all maple shells in a wide selection of lacquered and covered finishes.
Along with the introduction of the Meridian Series comes the introduction of Mapex's newly designed Isolated Tom Mount System. This version of the system is significantly lighter in weight and lower in profile than before and is more easily mounted and adjusted.
Additionally, the unique Mapex off-the-shell design and single-point-of-contact lugs distribute tension evenly across the shell for even better resonance and sustain.

Comments about Mapex Meridian Maple SRO 5-piece Shell Pack:
I sold two high end snare drums and decided to invest the money into a full sized drum set. After A LOT of research, I ordered a set of Meridian Maples in 12, 13, 16, and 22 inch sizes, without ever hearing them.
These are competitive with PDP Concept Maple, Ludwig Epic, Gretsch Catalina Maple (which I have owned), Sonor 2007, and Tama Silverstar Birch. Any of these would be a great choice but I opted for Mapex because I had never owned them before and was looking for a set that sounded terrific right out of the box. I was not disappointed, well too much.
The heads on the set were Remo, Made in China UV. With the exception of the bass and snare drum, they did not have to be changed. Outstanding tone and attack, when tuned low and they tune up in the high range easily.
I replaced the kick head with my favorite, Aquarian Super Kick II, and that did it for the bass drum. Adjusted the resonate side a little tighter and no extra muffling required. The snare was a different story.
Although it is perfectly made with 10 lug, heavy rims, I was disappointed with the strainer; PLASTIC! Replaced the head with Remo Coated Ambassadors, and VOILA! still had excessive snare buzz. After totally dismantling the snare and tightening everything I could get to, including the strainer, I reassembled it and now, it sounds like a maple snare should. I have no Idea what I fixed, but it's fixed and I am very happy with it.
My set came with a Mapex 700 Series hardware pack and a send-off for the new Raptor Direct Drive double bass pedal. Truly, an excellent value that no other manufacturer could match. I'll review the Raptor separately.
I don't believe these sets are still being made so grab one before they are all gone. Exceptional sound and value, I won't be looking for another full sized set for a long time.
