    A tour-friendly set that's lightweight and durable.

This Mapex 5-Piece Standard-Sized Shell Pack is appointed with 7-ply, 100% maple shells that produce full-bodied, rich, low tones. Some of the main appointments include the Mapex I.T.S. drum Mounting system, with minimal drum contact for better tone.

Mapex is proud to present the Meridian Drum Series to their arsenal of world-class drums. Mapex offers lighter weight, and less bulky appointments with the Meridian Series drum set. From tom holders to lugs and their tom mounting system, Mapex has rethought everything on this shell pack.

The drum shells feature Mapex's I.T.S. Mounting System, reinforcement of their commitment to "less is more." The Mapex drum mount is compact while continuing to enhance overall drum response with less shell contact. With this Mapex mount you are able to change drumheads with the tom still mounted to the tom holder.

The included tom holders are light with little bulk, to offer a sleek look and a light overall load. The corner-friendly double tom mounts have a third middle position for a cymbal arm (not included), to make for fewer tripod stands on the floor.

    Cymbals and hardware not included.

Comments about Mapex Meridian Maple Standard 5-Piece Shell Pack:

These are not perfect, but well-matched to the price. As they say, you get what you pay for. And, what you get for your money spent here is a well-rounded kit that even the best drummer would be proud of.

But you don't read a review to hear the same parroted phrases describing how awesome these are. Here is an exhaustible list of issues I have with this kit:

    1. The rack tom sizes are too similar. Mapex's SRO setup was available when I bought these, and I wish I had gone for those. Just doing the basic get-the-wrinkles-out tuning for the toms make them sound indistinguishable from each other, so you might as well not bother having two. This is fixable with more effort put into tuning, but I am nothing if not lazy and like to have the drums sound as great as possible with as little effort.

    2. The finish isn't as I was expecting. I am speaking from the Midnight Steel finish; and while they certainly don't look bad, the lighter color purple center isn't nearly as exaggerated as the picture suggests. Nevertheless, they do look really nice...just not as nice as I was expecting.

    3. Ugh, the heads. They aren't nearly as bad as normal stock heads you get on lower end kits, but I have never understood the appeal of clear heads on anything but fusion kits...and single ply clear bass batter head?! Its things like this that make people think they need to shove half a bed into their bass drum to make it sound good. The entire kit is WAY too resonant out-of-the-box for my taste. Perhaps that is my own fault for getting 6-ply shells, but I was hoping the extra thickness of the shell plys would alleviate that a bit. Slap some one, or even two ply coated heads on everything (especially the bass) and there is no need for any muffling.

    4. This is just a personal thing, but I actually prefer cymbal mounted toms. Bass drum mounted toms are certainly convenient, but I find the toms move around a lot more than if they were cymbal stand mounted. This isn't really a negative thing against the kit, though.
