Awesome snare!

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

This is so identical to the 149.99 Mapex MPX piccolo its not funny. Great snare even with the stock heads, of coarse higher quality ones will be better when these wear out. I tuned it to a mid pitch and applied one moongel and it sounds fantastic!... I am actually using this as my main snare right now and really like it. Sharp cutting crack of the whip and very responsive. I compared it to a MPX snare and all I could tell the difference on is the strainer on the MPX is a little fancier and maybe different hoops, other than that I couldn't see the difference. If you are looking for a cheap auxiliary snare on the cheap but not cheap quality look no further.

Fantastic snare, exceptional value!

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

This snare sounds great regardless of price. When you consider price, it is unbeatable. Cutting, with plenty of crack, this snare can be used for either a main snare, or a side snare. I currently use mine tuned up rather high. It is perfect for funky breakdowns, ala James Brown. The batter head also has a nice "rough" surface that works great with brushes. For the price you pay, it is worth having this as a second snare, just in case you break a head at a gig, and don't have time to swap heads. Do yourself a favor, and pick this little wonder up. You won't regret it!

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

Overall, this is a great snare. I would use it for a primary snare if I had too. It has good quality sound for an inexpensive drum. Great value. I've never had a backup snare and I was wanting to aquire a piccolo snare, so I thought for the price, what the heck, I was really pleasantly surprised.
For the price this snare is really good. Sounds good, I'm using it for a practice snare and it will serve as a backup snare.
It tunes up really well, 8 lugs for tuning is really good. Has a good sound.
This snare is made really well, 8 lugs for tuning (not usually found on a inexpensive drum) the throw off is good, and it has a 20 strand snares. For the price it is a excellent drum.

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I have had other piccolo snares in the past, and have missed that "crack" lately, so I decided to try this one out.

I purchased one of these to try out at home and liked it so much that I have now purchased two more! This past weekend I put one on my touring set and I think it will be my new primary snare; it is replacing a 1960's Ludwig Supraphonic that I've been playing for years.

This is an excellent piccolo snare drum. It is well made and solid. I like my snare tuned high and tight to begin with, and with a little dampening, this drum produces that snappy "crack" that I like, without the overtones.

At this price, you owe it to yourself to try one of these out, if that is the type of sound that you like.

Wanted to add a side snare to my kit, and had always wanted a piccolo snare. Well, the price was right so I ordered. I am VERY impressed with the quality of this little baby. It is crisp, responsive, and overall just neat! I could easily get by with this as my main snare. The only thing it does not have is a damper for the batter head but, for me and for its intended purpose - that's fine!

Contemplated on purchasing this and thought I would be wasting my money on this snare but I was wrong. This tiny thing can take a beating with excellent sound screaming from it. I own a 1977 Tama 10pc Drum set and currently use a DW snare which I love to use. Needed a back up snare and thought about this Maple piccolo and I was amazed on the sound it produces. Cannot go wrong with this if you ask me.

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I use this snare for Funk, Jazz and small venue gigs. It has a bit of re verb to it and a sound ring did not do much to dampen it. I used one of those rubber grips that are used to help us "older folds" open jars, taped to the batter head close to the rim. Ir helps a lot. The drum has a heck of a crack to it and punches through horns and keyboards really well. I For the price you can't go wrong.

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I recently returned to drumming to help our worship group at a small church. Plus I missed it (started as a drummer 25 years ago) So I needed some affordable drums. If you take the time to properly tune this it's a wonderful affordable addition to any snare collection. I use it mostly in worship groups in small venues. I still have all the original heads and snare...people say you can upgrade the snare and strainer later...honestly I haven't seen the need. Don't let it scare you that it's 13" if anything this makes it a little easier to keep reigned in in a small church/venue. I bought it so cheap a decent stand costs more! I tuned mine fairly high. With brushes sticks or regal blackjack brushes with an "O" ring about 1.5" from each end you can really keeps an acoustic kit reigned in with no need for an acrylic surround/shield. You'll love this if your other snare is a well tuned 5.5-6x14" this along with 7A sticks gives you a lot of volume options for different songs/services. Would be perfect for a small jazz kit or expanding an electric kit. It's not a high end snare...but if you take care of it and tune it right...you will LOVE it! I also use a DDRUM D2R kit which as a good buy...though use the heads as bottom heads and buy pinstripes or Emperor clears for top heads and a CS dot coated on snare. Throw cymbals away and buy some good used zildian A's ready to record with these "entry level" drums.

I've had this snare for two years and use it as my main. It has a broad tuning range with just the right amount of overtones than can be controlled easily with a moon gel. It has an amazing rimshot that cuts through the mix with out being distracting in a live setting.
The cons: the tension adjustment on the throw off doesn't like to stay tight. I have to retighten about every 20-30 minutes of play. It's not suited for vintage style recording. It sounds flat and quiet unless it is close mic'd. When close mic'd it sounds amazing so you'll just need to balance/eq your overheads.

This is an amazing snare! So glad I bought this! There were only a couple minor issues. The throw off would stay on all the time, but the snares would loosen up so you would lose the sound that you had. And if you were to tighten the snares to much, you wouldn't get any snare sound if you were playing ghost notes. But other than that, it has an amazing tone and it has this amazing ring! Even though this snare has a very short depth, it has lots of body and I was amazed at the tuning range it had.

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I have wanted a piccolo snare for a while for accents. Got a great deal on this one and I think it is well worth the money. Only thing I am going to change is eventually it will get an Aquarian triple threat head.
