OVERVIEW

A cajon that plays bongo patterns.

The Meinl Bongo Cajon is uniquely different from a traditional cajon. It delivers the sound one expects from a traditional cajon, but the playing surface has high- and low-pitched areas so it can play bongo patterns as well. The bongo cajon's compact size and light weight make it a perfect companion on the road.

Wonderful Little Piece of Gear

Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

The Meinl Bongo Cajon is a wonderful little piece of gear and makes a great addition to your other pieces of Latin percussion. Before you buy one, make sure you understand what you're buying. This is like a set of wooden bongos (hence the name), and it is in no way related to anything that sounds like a snare drum. The beauty of it is that there are no heads to tune, and the pitch sounds great over each area of the box. You can get a lot of different tones out of this thing if you play with it a while, including tapping on the sides of the box! It's also beautifully finished and satin smooth. Record it, slap on a little compression and a little reverb and the sound it makes comes to life in your recordings.

Alot of fun

Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

I've seen this advertised before, but never really seen one in person. I own a Meinl pickup cajon and I'd been very happy with it, so I figured I might as well give it a shot. When I first saw it, it struck me how simple it was. However, that being said, it's put together very well. The wood is good quality, it's fit together pretty cleanly, it's not particle board screwed together here. I compared it with several different LP bongos to see how different the projection and sound was- and to my surprise the bongo cajon wasn't that much different. It can be loud and ring nicely, but just like regular bongos, it takes some knowledge of where and how to hit it for the optimal sound. For what I was going to use it for, this works better than I could have hoped. There's no heads to replace or tune, no uncomfortable tuning lugs to deal with if you hold it between your legs while playing. You can set it on a flat surface and it will project just fine due to the design. The sound does actually sound like the real thing- with a little hint of playing a wood block at the same time. That being said, of course you're not going to be able to do EVERYTHING you could with a good pair of bongos, there are limitations. For some subtle strokes you may find it difficult to get the same effect you would get on a regular pair. A good slap is a little more of a challenge, but still very possible. Also, the macho portion is a bit too small to me, but it's adequate. All in all, a great instrument to have.

I thoroughly enjoy this little drum. I'm no pro when it comes to latin precussion but I find that it has a nice clean sound and goes everywhere with me. definitely worth it.

Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

This cajon is one of the most incredible and unique pieces of percussion equipment I have ever had the pleasure of playing. For $50 this is more than a good deal. It's so fun to play and the best part is that it's so portable! If you're even considering buying this cajon, get it, you won't be disappointed, I know I wasn't.

Nice but not what I expected

      Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

When I got this drum, I thought it could go with my other full sized cajon, similar sounding. But it was not exactly what I expected. There are no snare strings inside so no snare sound comes from it. There is nice bongo sounds but I was looking for the bass and snare type cajon. Otherwise seems like a nice drum.

        Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

        One word review: "wow!"
These are a fantastic alternative to traditional bongos. They really do perform as advertised - a strikingly similar tone without any of the hassle or maintenance of having tune-able heads. Of course, the limitation is that you obviously can not tune this to specific pitches - but in most settings, realistically - how often does anyone actually do that? They produce a pretty big sound with a light touch that cuts through the room, and I actually find it easier to produce a variety of tones on these than on traditional bongos. Very happy with this purchase!
