This was a Christmas gift for our 11 year old son who has Autism, and he was pining for a drum. We felt a Cajon would be a low cost starter kit to improve his motor skills. It was a father & son project, with good fun and a great memory of accomplishing this together.

Cajons are very simple box percussion instruments, and as such are very easy to assemble. All I needed was some wood glue, 2 drill bits, a power drill-driver, a angle square, and a few wood clamps.

As a kit I'm impressed with the quality. I bought the deluxe Ovangkol frontplate version, and I highly recommend spending the little extra for the better tone and playing response over the base line model. Ovangkol tonewood, made famous by Taylor Guitars in their 400 series acoustics, provides a wonderful tone and nice appearance that turns heads and strikes up conversations wherever we go with it. This cajon is great to take on camping trips and other vacations.

Only thing I recommend is to dry fit the parts first before you glue them to make sure they fit.

This is a DIY project and although it could have been better, I have a fully custom cajon from a kit.

Band clamps and other clamps are required to apply the pressure needed. Also the back plate according to the directions is glued on. I glued the back plate, but also brad-nailed it.

You will need to true up and sand like crazy. The joints are strong and the channels come pre-cut.

I took the existing snare design and cut the snares shorter and located them on the sides of the cajon by cutting channels in the frame behind the front plate. Also the front and rear panels in my kit were larger than the sides. All pieces had to be re-cut and re-measured which made the very poor directions useless.

I didn't drill screw holes in the upper corners of the front plate and I relocated the sound hole 1/4 from the bottom on center and made it 4.5" in diameter.

Overall the sound out of my redesigned cajon is very pleasing, responsive and I had the ability to stain in a custom configuration.

It was a great alternative to an off the shelf cajon. I have one that is 100% made to my specifications.

Fairly easy to build if you have some rudimentary carpentry skills.you will need some large clamps and cargo straps . Keep everything square and take your time. I stained the front and did the rest with a few coats of Danish oil.came out looking and sounding great.

I have now built two Meinl cajones and they are fun projects and fun to play. All of the components were included and all the pre-cuts were accurate. The most difficult task is countersinking the screw holes on the front piece. One must be very careful to obtain the correct depth to make the screw heads flush with the surface without going to deeply. This would be a great project for parents and their children to make together. Make sure you have a metric ruler, as the measurements are metric.

Two of the boards were not notched out which made it difficult to assemble. I had to cut notches myself. Other than that, it is a great product, and fun to play.

I have never played any kind of percussion, other then on the steering wheel of my work semi, but I like to build musical instruments. I have built many Cigar Box Guitars, so I wanted to give this a try. I am having a blast with it. I think it sounds great. There were questions as to where the snare goes, top or bottom, I searched online and found mixed answers. I went with bottom and I think it has an awesome sound. I am certainly not a professional though, and that is just my opinion, but I like it.

I decided to purchase this kit because the price range for a ready- built one was too high. The project was fun and fairly easy. Once built, this Cajon produced a big sound and great look (ovangkol front plate). I was very pleased with the product and the customer service here at Musicians Friend.

This was a fun and easy project and it is much less expensive than a cajon that has been built as long as you already own the clamps needed for assembly. I do not like the snare sound but when I experiment by placing it in different locations at different tensions I'm sure it will improve. I stained the front and the back to give it a nicer look. I am not going to finish it with varnish or poly because it will not be used often.
Note: In the directions there are instructions for cutting the sound hole but mine came pre-cut.
