This was a Christmas gift for our 11 year old son who has Autism, and he was pining for a drum. We felt a Cajon would be a low cost starter kit to improve his motor skills. It was a father & son project, with good fun and a great memory of accomplishing this together.

Cajons are very simple box percussion instruments, and as such are very easy to assemble. All I needed was some wood glue, 2 drill bits, a power drill-driver, a angle square, and a few wood clamps.

As a kit I'm impressed with the quality. I bought the deluxe Ovangkol frontplate version, and I highly recommend spending the little extra for the better tone and playing response over the base line model. Ovangkol tonewood, made famous by Taylor Guitars in their 400 series acoustics, provides a wonderful tone and nice appearance that turns heads and strikes up conversations wherever we go with it. This cajon is great to take on camping trips and other vacations.

Only thing I recommend is to dry fit the parts first before you glue them to make sure they fit.

This is a DIY project and although it could have been better, I have a fully custom cajon from a kit.

Band clamps and other clamps are required to apply the pressure needed. Also the back plate according to the directions is glued on. I glued the back plate, but also brad-nailed it.

You will need to true up and sand like crazy. The joints are strong and the channels come pre-cut.

I took the existing snare design and cut the snares shorter and located them on the sides of the cajon by cutting channels in the frame behind the front plate. Also the front and rear panels in my kit were larger than the sides. All pieces had to be re-cut and re-measured which made the very poor directions useless.

I didn't drill screw holes in the upper corners of the front plate and I relocated the sound hole 1/4 from the bottom on center and made it 4.5" in diameter.

Overall the sound out of my redesigned cajon is very pleasing, responsive and I had the ability to stain in a custom configuration.

It was a great alternative to an off the shelf cajon. I have one that is 100% made to my specifications.

Comments about Meinl Make Your Own Cajon:

I am not a woodworker, and I didn't have the clamps that are suggested for assembly. I was still able to get it put together squarely without much trouble. It requires a lot of sanding on the corners to get it to look nice, but it is functional with good sound as soon as the glue dries. I recommend putting the face on metal when countersinking. It is too easy to drill completely through with the drill bit otherwise.

Comments about Meinl Make Your Own Cajon:

This is my second MYO Cajon. First one was basic all-birch model and sounded great. Left that at guitarist house so it would always be available with plans to build another. Saw ovangkol face version and research showed it was a better resonating wood. MusiciansFriend had best price and free shipping. It arrived quickly in perfect condition. Assembled using clamps but would recommend straps. There are some assembly aids recommended like batons and oversized multiplex board. This drum looks great and sounds good, but I think my first build sounded better... A deeper bass sound in middle and more snare sound at top. The onangkol appears to be just a Vaneer layer which may have stiffened the playing surface so the bass isn't as deep and the snare doesn't pop as much. Then again, it could be manufacturing differences since they are hand made. Anyway, fun project and fraction of the price of preassembled all wood Cajon.

Its good, its fun, its easy to build. Had to buy my own hardware and feet. Nailed and glued the back on instead of just glue. Im sure a more expensive one sounds better, but this is just dandy for the build.

I am experienced at woodworking. I loved the kit. Great quality materials and a fun project. I modified the unit to put the snare on the side so that I could screw in across the inside of the front a small, thin wood separator about 1/3 down to give a clearer bass sound without snare. The result was much better for my taste. Thanks for a great kit!
