      Meinl

Designed by Meinl in cooperation with Chris Adler from Lamb of God.

This Mb20 Ride Cymbal has a massive bell, an extreme heavy weight and a highly polished finish, making it a distinctive ride with outstanding sound qualities.

Meinl's Mb20 series was created for one reason . . . high volume. The weights are all on the heavier side for that reason. But anyone can make a loud cymbal, the magic with the Mb20 series is that they are still musical and they feel good to play. The cymbals are handmade in Turkey using the traditional B20 bronze alloy and then the polishing process is performed in Germany. The finish is a super brilliant finish--perfect for stage lights, and Meinl has a special two-step buffing process. The cymbals are perfect for anything loud.

Comments about Meinl Mb20 Pure Metal Ride Cymbal:

My last ride was a Zildjian 20" ZXT Titanium medium ride, which I've been playing for well over eleven years. It may have sounded good when I was younger, but now that my ear for cymbals is more developed, it didn't quite suit my tastes anymore. Now, I was (and still am) a Zildjian fan since I started drumming, but after trying out a ton of their rides, they didn't have quite the sound I was looking for. I've heard a lot of good things about Meinl and their cymbals (especially since several of my favorite drummers play Meinl), so I decided to give this one a shot.

First off, this thing is massive! At twenty-four inches in diameter, this is the largest ride cymbal I've ever played, and also quite possibly the heaviest at nearly eight or ten pounds (not sure of the EXACT weight). My last ride was twenty inches, and I've played plenty of twenty-one and twenty-two inch rides when I was at school, but this just blows those out of the water. I've had a bit of trouble fitting it in between my splash and my china without it hanging too much over my smaller floor tom, but I managed to squeeze it in. I was also a bit worried that my current stand (a Pearl BC930 boom stand) wouldn't hold it up, but it stayed in place even without the counterweight on it, though I still slapped it on just in case.

This cymbal got delivered to me while I already had half of my drum kit at a gig rehearsal, so my first real test of it was in a situation where you have to turn the volume down for a bunch of middle-school kids on stage. Most of the reviews I've read on this monster said that this cymbal was only really good for loud music, so needless to say, I was a bit concerned about how it would sound in a more-or-less quiet show. Turns out, though, that it sounded pretty good; I played on it with a pair of Vic Firth AJ6 sticks (the ones with the extreme taper at the tips), and it held itself back when I needed it to. There is some crazy-apparent stick definition in this cymbal, but there was still room for it to shine. I wouldn't say it's dry, exactly, as there is just a little bit of wash and shimmer in it, but keep in mind the stick definition. It's almost halfway between a bright and dark sound (leaning more towards bright).

When I got my half-kit home and reassembled it with the other pieces, I knew I had to try it with what its designer meant it for: heavy metal. And let me tell you right now, this thing is a BEAST at what it does. I've played on it with a pair of Vic Firth 5A Extremes, and it holds its own in just about any style of metal that I play it to, be it Lamb of God, A7X, Killswitch Engage, or even Tool. For such a heavy cymbal, there's quite a bit of sustain to it when the bow is played. It is just BARELY crashable, though that's to be expected for a cymbal of this much weight, as the "crash" sounds more like a crashy-sounding gong; it does sound a lot like one when rolling on it with felt timpani mallets.

The bell is by far the best thing about this cymbal. The "mega-bell" rides I've played on don't even come close to this one. It is incredibly piercing, and I'll bet it can cut through distortion like a hot knife through butter. It's got a sharp and bright character with dark undertones. I've also found that I get the best bell tone by hitting the lower part of the bell, where it's just about to meet the bow of the cymbal.

Overall, this cymbal was worth every penny I paid for it. It sounds leagues better than my last ride. I am extremely happy with the purchase, and Meinl deserves my respect.

      THE Best, All Around

Comments about Meinl Mb20 Pure Metal Ride Cymbal:

I bought this ride last Christmas and let me tell you, this is by far the best ride I have ever played or seen. Don't listen to other peoples reviews if they say that it is only good for metal because that isn't true at all. I have used this for everything, it works great for jazz or blues and also works great for funk, it has a dark dryish sound almost but the hits are very clean and loud. I don't want to say it's a dry cymbal, its dry.. in a wet way. The bell is phenomenal, it cuts like nothing else and sounds great, the whole cymbal cuts through anything, you will hear your hits. It also works great for classic rock, Metal of course and pretty much any genre you name. The thing is, when I bought it.. I hated it, I was expecting a lot more- BUT, as time went on and I played the cymbal more, it got worn in and eventually the sound gets even better and continues to get better as time goes on. You will never ever have to worry about buying another ride, it will never break.. It is THICK and it is heavy and big, there's no way to crack it and its very durable. Once you see its size, you will never look at 20" rides the same.. It looks monstrous, people always ask what it and it looks so good, the metals really shine and look TOP quality. it looks as good as it sounds, on the bottom of the bell under the cymbal it has Chris's signature in gold written on it, very nice touch.. You can see all the details in this cymbal. Mine came with a Meinl bag that is very big and durable and works perfect with this cymbal. I would pay even more for this cymbal, it is well worth it and a GREAT buy, definitely get this cymbal if you get the chance, top quality.

      Amazing cymbal....however....

Comments about Meinl Mb20 Pure Metal Ride Cymbal:

If you're looking for a good metal ride, this one is the best you can get. The bell is phenomenal for fast metal beats(as expected from Chris Adler), and it cuts through the loud noise during a show easily. The body is very impressive as well. However, one of the problems I have experienced with this cymbal is that it is only good for metal. If you attempt to use it in a rock or even punk band, you wont be happy with the outcome of the recordings at all. Another problem I experienced with this ride is that its too big! I have three 22" cymbal bags but this obviously doesnt fit into those. I purchased the Zildjian Super Cymbal Bag but that ripped in a matter of weeks on the road. Overall however this cymbal is a must have for any metal drummer-provided they have the bag to hold it and the genre to take it.

Meinl Mb20 Pure Metal Ride Cymbal

      By Scott-Kew8b

Comments about Meinl Mb20 Pure Metal Ride Cymbal:

I just received this cymbal and it looks fantastic. I purchased it with the primary interest of having a loud, piercing bell sound to cut through the rock music my band plays. I had a Zildjian 18" ride for years and was never pleased with the weak bell. I have to say, I am very disappointed in the bell of this Meinl. It does not sound like "lamb of god" I have tried 6 different types of sticks including the exact ones that Chris Adler uses and am still not getting the sound I thought it should produce. I realize no two cymbals are made the same but I am unhappy with the purchase. I would urge any musicians interested to try the cymbal in a local store first. Like I mentioned, I've tried different sticks, striking hard and soft and just can't get the sound I expected, particularly for a cymbal in this price range. It looks beautiful though and does sound better than my Zildjian.

      Almost perfect.

Comments about Meinl Mb20 Pure Metal Ride Cymbal:

I agree with the other reviews- it's great for metal. Only metal... and nothing else. It isn't versatile at all, so if you play metal music and don't plan on broadening your mind at all, then this one is for you. But if you want to expand, then getting something smaller and lighter would be a little bit better of an option.

I have a student that is really into a band called Lamb of God and he is constantly telling me how amazing their drummer is. He also tells me that he uses Meinl cymbals, i am a huge Meinl fan but i only own cymbals from the Byzance family. Well to make a long story short, my student purchased this cymbal and brought it to practice one day and I was totally blown away by its power and its ear shattering bell. I will definately be purchasing this cymbal. Good job Meinl, keep blowing me away.
