The Qweeka, or cuica, is one of the best-loved Brazilian percussion instruments.
Made from lightweight aluminum, with lightweight and solid construction that makes it a perfect drum for street samba. An internal bamboo shaft is embedded in the goatskin head and rubbed with a damp cloth, producing its distinctive hoarse, squeaking sound.
The Meinl Qweeka is derived from the Brazilian cuica, which is found in carnaval percussion groups as well as fusion and reggae music.

Comments about Meinl Qweeka:
I really liked the sound of this drum and it was easy to use. However, the wooden dowel was very flimsy and broke the first time I played out with it. I'm not sure if it was due to bad technique or if it was an especially flimsy dowel, but I was not being rough with it when it snapped off. I was surprised at how thin the dowel was (as thin as the ink refill in a Bic disposable pen).
I was going to just order a new head, but you can't find them at MF or through Meinl. I have tracked down a few places that have them but don't know anything about the quality (maybe better than what came with it?) . Suffice it to say, I found this to be rather inconvenient and annoying and I have yet to get around to ordering a new one. So, now it sits on a shelf and collects dust.
I may just be naive, but I was dissapointed in the integrity of the drum head/dowel.

I love this qweeka (everybody else spells this as cuica, don't know why Meinl has to be different!). I had purchased the larger version initially, only to realize that the tone was way too deep for my purposes. The 6" version has a clean, high sound. Not difficult to get notes out of like some other cuicas I have tried. Great for drum circles and the like due to high volume and portability. Recommended!
