I waited several months to get this item on backorder and wow, am I happy with it! I own several kits, hand drums, percussion items, electronic percussion, and so on and this little cajon is a must-have. I currently use it in an acoustic rock setting with a blues/rock group and could easily see using it in the studio as backing percussion for any of my other projects. It's perfect for accompanying acoustic guitar at an open mic or even at a drum circle. The bass tone is tight and focused and the snare is consistent and clean. The cajon seems built to be mic'd and the recordings I've done with it sound fantastic. I added 4 castanets and I often wear foot tambourines, ankle rattles, and finger shot shakers with a foot cabasa on my left for a fuller sound. With some creative percussion added to the cajon, you can do some really great layering, or keep it simple with the bass note, snare and basic tom runs on the tom section. My only gripe is that it doesn't seem to have a bag available! For about a Benjamin, you can't go wrong. Right now, this thing is getting more use than my MUCH more expensive Wavedrum!

Very happy with the sound and the fact that I don't have to bend over to play it. When you mike it, it has a very good, deep kick drum sound. Just wish it had a bag, I am using the box it came in.

            Comments about Meinl Slap-Top Cajon:

I purchased this drum for my son for his birthday. He is an accomplished hand drum player, playing in his church's worship band. He was playing this drum in about 10 minutes after testing the sounds in different areas. The comfort of the slap-top play is much better than the typical cajon. Great design. Great bass. Great mids. Great snare. Haven't tried to mike it yet, but should perform well in larger auditorium. Good volume for small venues that would not require amplification. Very affordable. You will sell many of these, once the word gets out.

On occasion, I play small gigs that will not allow a full drum kit. I did not want a cajon that required me to sit on it and bend over for the couple of hours I play. This does the job well. I have been told that it projects well across a room without a mic, and I need to hit it hard.

This a fun instrument. My primary instruments are string instruments, but this gives the advantage of several hand drums and yet remains simple. Great for small group "sing alongs" and fits all kinds of music. Allows anyone to join in on the fun.
I use it to help me to improve on my timing and rhythems.

Well constructed and comfortable to use. Good item to haven in your musical inventory.

                  Comments about Meinl Slap-Top Cajon:

I was thinking about buying a regular cajone, but thought the playing position might aggravate my back problems. To play this one you sit up straight with it between your knees like a set of bongos...problem solved!

By striking in different areas of the top or by using different parts of your hand you can get an amazing variety of tones. Pulling the baffle baffle tube out of the port gives the instrument a more boomy, hollow sound that is also an interesting variation.

When you are playing this cajone, you really can't hear how it sounds (particularly the bass tones) because the port is facing away from you. I mic it through my guitar amp, boost the bass, mix in a little reverb or echo and enjoy a much improved sound.

Since I am a vocalist/guitarist/worship leader I probably will not be playing the cajone out anywhere. It gives me a lot of enjoyment and lets me express my "inner drummer" at home without having the expense or space requirments of a drum kit.
