OVERVIEW

Provides a great feel and rhythmic foundation to any musical situation.

The Meinl String Cajon features built-in adjustable strings which offer a sizzle effect. The strings touch the frontplate on the inside and span from top to bottom. They deliver a sensitive rattle that can be adjusted to fit various musical applications. The patented integrated string mute system controls the tension of the strings and ensures a dry and crisp sizzle effect. The drum also comes with the Professional Cajon Bag to keep it protected.

Its top corners are adjustable with screws, which lets you control the crash or "slap" effect. Loosen them for a strong effect, or close them down for a milder response.

The cajon is an authentic Afro-Cuban wooden box percussion instrument. Meinl cajons are completely handmade from start to finish. They work perfectly for flamenco or world music and deliver a wide range of sounds, from loud, deep bass tones to cutting high overtones. Drummers and percussionists appreciate the cajon for its diversity of sound. They're also perfect for unplugged gigs or sessions.

The cajon is one of today's most popular percussion instruments because it's very easy to play, and provides a great feel and rhythmic foundation to any musical situation. It is fun to experiment with and is popular in literally every musical genre as it is often used during unplugged gigs or softer songs to replace an entire drum kit.

After just a little practice, basic beats and grooves can be achieved. It can be used by drummers as a substitute for their throne, playing on it with one hand, while the other hand keeps time on the ride or the hi-hat.

Many drummers also use the cajon during unplugged gigs, certain songs, or spontaneous sessions as its ability to emulate many sounds serves as an excellent substitute for a complete drum set.

Traditionally, cajons are played by sitting on the padded top of the box while slightly leaning backwards. The frontplate is struck with the bare hands. Various playing techniques help to create different sounds ranging from deep bass tones to cutting highs and slaps.

A nice effect can be achieved by sliding the foot up and down the frontplate when playing the cajon, changing the pitch of its tone.

A unique and inspiring sound is achieved when playing the cajon's frontplate with a pair of brushes or rods.

The history of the cajon
The cajon, which is the Spanish word for box, has been part of Afro-Peruvian music since the 19th century. The instrument originated in colonial Peru, when the slaves, whose African drums had been forbidden by their masters, used wooden boxes intended to hold fruits or overturned drawers to play their rhythms on. Later the cajon was officially added to the instrumentation of the vals criollo, or "creole waltz." It is now a national emblem for Peruvians, and an indispensable part of any ensemble that performs the traditional folk music of Peru.

The cajon's later development can be clearly traced back to one man, the flamenco guitar player Paco de Lucia. In the early 1970s, the Spanish embassy in Lima, Peru hosted a party for Paco de Lucia, where they had a traditional Peruvian band perform utilizing the cajon. Flamenco music comprises many different rhythms which are normally played by the guitar player striking the body of the guitar. At that party, Paco de Lucia asked his former percussionist Ruben Danta to play the "Buleria" on the cajon, which is one of the rhythms used in flamenco. Consequently, Paco de Lucia took the cajon with him back to Spain. The short staccato sounds that can be played on the cajon make it perfect for flamenco music, because that sound naturally relates to the footwork and hand-claps ("palmas") used in Flamenco. Since the cajon's historic migration from Peru to Spain, its use has spread worldwide.

Comments about Meinl String Cajon with Bag:

I have bought 3 setups that include this cajon. I have paired all of them with the Shure beta 52. One cajon I even rigged a small kick drum out of for an outside acoustic set. As long as you adjust the snare every once and a while, this product will always have a great sound. I have had a number of services with my worship leading that my drummer couldn't make it and my bass player sat down on a cajon and saved the day. I would highly recommend this product!

Meinl String Cajon with Bag Makah Burl Frontplate

          By Debster

          from Alabama

Comments about Meinl String Cajon with Bag:

This is a very nice cajon. This was a gift for my drummer friend, and he is enjoying getting to know the instrument. He plays a wide variety of musical genres and is experimenting with the sounds he can get, as this is his first cajon. My only complaint was that there was no information at all on how to tune the cajon. There was an allen wrench included, but no instructions on how to properly tune the cajon's "strings" to get different tones. This shouldn't be hard to figure out, but a brief manual would have been nice. This lack of info is the only thing that kept this rating from being a 10!
This cajon came in a well padded gear bag. The strings are easily accessible for tuning.
The seat pad was unglued on one corner. We fixed it with a little Gorilla Glue. Otherwise, the construction of the cajon was excellent.
You can't beat the deal, as the bag was included with the cajon.

          One nice box

By The Man With the Moves

from Not gonna tell you that!

Comments about Meinl String Cajon with Bag:

I got this cajon to play in my church drum circle because I thought our array of percussion instruments was lacking in low-end sound. I got this baby in the mail, and it has got serious bass qualities. You can also get a nice snare sound out of the edges, in contrast with the middle frontplate. The bag is great, as well. Overall, I couldn't be much happier with my shiny cajon.NOTE: The cajon does not come with instructions on how to adjust the string tightness, so you have to go to Meinl's web site and look it up.
