I purchased the small version of this shaker. It was definitely not what I was looking for. It barely makes any noise and you need a very very high studio quality mic to even remotely pick it up. So, like many other instruments of mine, I modified it. I drilled into it, took out the beads, and replaced them with beads from a plastic LP shaker. The noise increased, and the tone was exceptional. The wood feels great in your hand, but unless you have skills with a drill and sealant, go for a plastic egg.
I might buy one more of these wooden ones for my little cousin for the Holidays.

The Nino Wood Egg Shaker is well built, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable to use. One should understand its application though (the product description will not tell you). It is for kids with parents who appreciate lower volume levels from their little musicians. The tone is very soft, warm, and QUIET. Imagine rice shaking around in a sandwich baggie. This is NOT to be used for any real live performance (possibly recording if you like the tone, I don't). It will not be picked up significantly through a microphone with even the smallest amount of competition. Go for the plastic ones for live percussion and get this one for your toddler's stocking ;)
