Well I read all the hipe and couldn't lay off buying one of these. I bought the deeper size. Don't get me wrong this is a great sounding drum, but here's where I think it falls short. I was really amazed after hearing all the great things about this drum. When tuning this snare with a drum dial I couldn't even reach 90 on 2 to 3 of the tuning lugs. It seemed like the tension rods are too long and they were bottoming out in their receivers. I just didn't expect that from a drum in this price range and reputation. The other thing is I think the snare throw off switch could of been quite a bit more refined than what's on here. I found it to be kind of cheapish and ordinary for a drum that is otherwise very heavy duty. It's clumsy in it's operation compared to most snare drums in this price range or much cheaper. The drum does sound great at a drum dial setting of about 88 batter and 82 snare side, but the part that bugs me the most is that I can't crank the drum up in the same consistent tension all around if I want to go tighter and higher. I'm just sort of stuck at this tension or something lower. I was thinking about buying shorter tension rods and then try tuning it, but thought "why should I have to?" I paid $400 for it! I'm not sure if I just bought a dud or what? I'm considering returning it.

I purchased this drum ten months ago.The drum arrived intact and seemed to be very sturdy and high quality.I have no arguments about the overall sound quality, it is a very articulate and versatile drum. After eight months I decided to change the snare head for the first time, only to find that the lug reiever nuts and/or the tension rods were stiff and possibly stripped on two lugs on the top counter hoop. Now what to do?If you buy this drum you are on your own, Drumtree "customer service" does not exist, it is actually a sales agent for Jeff's higher end drums called Grand Central Music.Only Jeff seems to know what type of lug and tension rod this snare takes, and because he is currently on tour, my drum sits useless in a case. The drum is not an Ocheltree custom drum, in other words, it is mass maufactured and Jeff Ocheltree has licensed his name and design ideas to another (unknown ) company. You should not feel bad if you thought this was an actual Ocheltree custom drum, as it is marketed that way. A drum is only as good as the hardware that supports it, and I have played low end and high end drums and never been stuck because I can't replace or find hardware which should not have worn out this quickly.

      A Great, Full Sounding Snare

      By dpdrum

Comments about Ocheltree Heavy Metals Carbon Steel Snare Drum:

I recently purchase the 5.5x11" snare and at firstI didn't really mess with the tuning, and thought the sound was a solid "good" snare. But, then as I tweeked the tunings a bit more, this things just sings! WOW!! I tried low, medium and high tunings on this thing and all the sounds I got were consistent in body, response, and tone!! Records really nice. Sounds like a pro-level recording snare. The price is right too!

      Awesome snare

Comments about Ocheltree Heavy Metals Carbon Steel Snare Drum:

Playing this snare is addictive! Lay into it and it Screams! Sounds like a cannon on steroids! At low volumes it is extremely sensitive, great for buzz rolls and ghost notes. I unveiled this snare at rehearsal last night and my band mates were blown away! No easy task as I have a sizeable arsenal of snares. This is currently my favorite snare. Great sound, visual appeal, versatility and all at a killer price! Try it, you'll Love it!

Incredible Is All I Can Say!

Comments about Ocheltree Heavy Metals Carbon Steel Snare Drum:

I bought the 6.5 x 14 Ocheltree because I've owned the 5.5 x 14 for over a year and it's the best snare I've ever owned. Now I've got a new favorite snare with the 6.5. If you love John Bonham like I do, this is the perfect snare for you. You can't possibly tune it wrong. It sounded great out of the box. Once again Jeff Ocheltree has done a fantastic job.

I needed a metal drum to complete my inventory of sounds. The bottom line this has replaced all others with the exception of my brass pearl piccolo. Go out and get this at all costs!! The best drum ever built!

This snare has everything you could want - tune it low, tune it high.. it just sounds great no matter how you set it up. If you want a modern rock crack - forget using samples for drum replacement.. use one of these.

      It's a beast!!!

Comments about Ocheltree Heavy Metals Carbon Steel Snare Drum:

I bought one of these in the 5.5" depth a few months ago and am just in awe of it. This guy builds some sick, sick drums!!!You know that studio sound you always try to emulate? Well, this drum is it, but at a fraction of the cost of some of the custom builders. It has an incredible tuning range, doesn't choke (at least that I could get from it), is quite sensitive, and keeps its tune all night. I've played it cranked tight as can be, and lower, and love it both ways. Rim clicks? Good lord! While a lot of click sounds are technique based (if you don't know how to do it, it will never sound good!), I've never gotten a better sounding click than with this drum. The only drawback is that it's a bit heavy - somewhere between 15-20 lbs. But that hasn't kept me from gigging with this workhorse. I'm so glad I bought this drum!

An Ocheltree for the rest of us...

      By sonordrummer

      from Valdosta, GA

Comments about Ocheltree Heavy Metals Carbon Steel Snare Drum:

For those of us who have wanted one of Jeff's more "pricey" creations, this is our opportunity to own a true Ocheltree design for a lot less green. This drum is beautifully designed and constructed. It sounds good out of the box, but tweak it and it really sings. I went with an Evans dry batter and set up the snare tension and it is awesome. I play rock and alternative and the snare cuts through the mix with ease. Mic it top and bottom and it screams. Get a heavy duty snare stand because this thing is HEAVY. This is a real attention getter, both visually and sound-wise. Sure to be a collectors item.
