Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion 25-Ply Maple Vented Snare Drum:

Heres the story. 35 year veteran of studio and live performance, rock, Americana, and also teaching drums. I was recording an album with an up-and-coming Americana rock group and had laid down all the tracks when we decided to midi all the snare notes and search the bank of sampled snares for a solid and unique-yet-familiar snare to use on their album. There were dozens of sampled snare sounds to choose from and we listened to them all, from Supraphonics to Bell Brass, to well, you name it. We found the idea sound with just a little over-ring on the hardest hits and it was unanimous, this was the snare sound we wanted on this album. Turned out to be this snare drum, the OCDP vented maple snare. With the album finished I could not be more pleased with the tone of the snare drum, so much so that I was now worried when I went out to play live with the same group in support of the new album, I would have a distinctively different sound using any one of my other 18 go-to snare drums. Then one day I happened across a sale on this snare drum at GC. Wasn't looking for it, but there it was. I got it down from the shelf and played it in the store (don't you hate guys that do that, I do....) Anyway it seemed pretty close, though it wasn't tuned at all, so I popped on it, took it to the studio, then analyzed the sound file on the recording. It was tuned to a G (196 hz) on the album. So I tuned the snare up to this note, and wow, it was spot on. Just like the sampled snare with no effects.
The next test came at rehearsal, where it again produced a sound like on the album. Finally, it was time for the first gig. It was just like listening to the playback in the studio. I had successfully reproduced the perfect snare sound for the record, live.
The snare came as described and I loved how easily and perfectly it tuned up, almost effortlessly due to the die-cast hoops. Was worried because I had seen 1 last year with separated plys in a GC in Louisville, but this one is dialed.

Gives sharp, crisp sound with deep undertones.
I use it in a studio only, but see no reason it cannot be used in all settings. This is a well designed and quality snare drum.

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion 25-Ply Maple Vented Snare Drum:

The snare is loud, sensitive and impressive. One thing I did not know is that it has snare beds. The die cast hoops definitely help with the overtones. I was impressed with the stock heads and snares. Altough I swapped them, the factory included heads and snares are better then average. It is very heavy and the lugs seem pretty good. There was some minor scuffing in the snare strainer, but no big deal. It is pretty high pitched and fast. The vent holes are not very well made, the wood seems chipped at the ends. Overall very good snare for the price, specially if you can get it on sale.

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion 25-Ply Maple Vented Snare Drum:

Let me start off by saying how awesome Musicians Friend is... They make buying anything you want very pleasant. I ordered this snare because of the research i did and i was looking for a wood snare. I am a big fan of Metal/Brass snares and i wanted something a little different. When this snare arrived, it had a blemish on it that i didn't like but i had a show that evening. I called Musicians friend right away and they said i could return it and they would send me another one. They sent me a return label and i played it that evening to see whether or not i even wanted it. Well let me tell you, after tuning it to my liking and playing it, i was hooked. The cool thing was there were other bands playing that evening and i had offered to let them use my kit so it would be easier for everyone. Everyone that played that snare was blown away.. They loved it and the sound out front was unbelievable. The tone was perfect. Oh, the kit everyone was playing was my Mapex Saturn IV in Granite Sparkle. It is an amazing kit. Needless to say, my new one arrived yesterday and it is perfect..!!! Thank you Musicians Friend..

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion 25-Ply Maple Vented Snare Drum:

The only complaint I have about this drum is the lack of any kind of grommet or insert in the two tone ports. The raw hole detracts from an otherwise nice looking drum. Perhaps OCDP did this to draw attention to the massive shell thickness which measures almost 1 1/2 inches deep!
Otherwise a good drum for the money.

    Solid Snare

    By Sam J.

    About Me Experienced

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion 25-Ply Maple Vented Snare Drum:

The drum sounds great. Very heavy and thick. I always immediately change the heads on new drums. The hardware is decent for the price. However, my drum needed a tightening on the strainer and about half of the lugs as they were actually pretty loose. Once that was done and the new heads were on this thing sounds pretty good. Visually, I was unimpressed with the glitter in person. To me it seemed sparse and It looks better in the picture. If you can catch this on sale and want to get a decent maple drum then do it.

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion 25-Ply Maple Vented Snare Drum:

I just received this drum last week. My first step after unpacking it was to replace the stock heads with an Evans HD Dry for the batter head and an Evans Hazy 300 for the reso head. I am glad I decided to change the heads immediately as I found one of the top tension rods was missing its washers which if left as is could have damaged the rim. I would have gone through the process of removing the heads and double checking all of the hardware anyway prior to playing it and I am glad I did. After replacing the heads and the missing washers and giving it a good tuning it was time to give it a good workout. Let me tell ya this drum kicks. I have been playing a 1963ish Slingerland that I rescued from a friends garage as my main snare. I have been looking for a snare to replace my Slingerland for quite some time (it sounds great but I don't want to put any extra wear and tear on a vintage drum) but every snare I tried just did not compare to the Slingerland... until this one. Not only did it have the tone I was looking for but the attack is through the roof. There is just the right amount of overtone and one little moon gel removes that for a dryer sound however imo it is not needed. I also have a Mapex Black Panther Warbird as a secondary snare and the 2 snares together compliment each other very well. Bottom line is I am extremely happy with it and would recommend this drum to anyone.

Projects well and tunes easy. Bought more as a backup but find I use it more than my Ludwig coliseum now. Besides being heavy I don't have a negative. Did have to change the heads and strainer but I always do that.
