Comments about PDP Concept Maple 4-Piece Shell Pack:
Let me just say, the drums themselves are fantastic. Easy to tune, easy to play, with a wide range of sounds. I'm using this kit for everything from pop to hard rock and it handles it all with ease. Don't get hung up on the shell sizing--this kit will deliver in spades.
My only real complaint with the kit are the clamps used on the tom and floor tom. It's based on DW's clamps, but is made for 10.5mm rods and floor tom legs as opposed to DW's 12.7mm setup. The problem is that the clamp is oval shaped, and so it is a rounded edge that meets with any memory lock. The only one provided with the kit is on the tom post, and it is a clamp-style with a small tab that is supposed to line up with a slot in the tom clamp. It does, but it takes a minute or two to get it all the way lined up, especially if the tom is at any kind of an angle once it is mounted. DW offers several clamp-style locks and I was able to procure three more to use as memory locks for the floor tom legs. Again, they work ok...but they don't line up super well and actually cause the legs to splay outward if you insert them too far, if that makes sense. It's just something I have to be aware of during setup. Now, once everything is together, the hardware is rock solid and doesn't worry me in the least, but...I'm not above doing a bit further customization, and will probably end up replacing the PDP clamps, tom post, and floor tom legs with it's DW counterparts. Those clamps and memory locks are much easier to use and set. Now, bear in mind that for most, this is a minor minor minor complaint, but as a frequently gigging drummer, ease and efficiency of setup are paramount to me.
Overall, this is a fantastic drum kit that gives one a truly custom sounding kit without breaking the bank. I urge you to consider these when looking for a quality kit. I mean, they're made by DW and at a 16th of the price. What more could you want?
