Comments about PDP Platinum Finishply Solid Maple Snare:

Slight cosmetic problem with the wrap, if you're really fussy. No way can you find a snare like this at this price and the sound you only get from solid snare. If you want a controllable snare that only makes sound when you want it, like when you hit it, get this snare. I would imagine it would be perfect for recording studio use. Only took a minute to be my favorite snare.

Comments about PDP Platinum Finishply Solid Maple Snare:

I was pleasantly surprised when I received this drum. These stock heads are some of the best I've heard!

This snare is very responsive! I agree with the other reviewer that this snare only responds when you want it to...very little snare buzz when playing the toms! I have 4 toms, so this was great! This snare also works well with brushes.

The tone and raised pitch from a single ply shell is noticeable. With the depth of only 5" I don't think most people would try to use this for a fat, deep crack. Instead, it has a really warm midrange tuning that's really versatile. I don't typically like my snares cranked, so I left this one at that upper midrange. I'd also like to add that this is one of the easiest snares I've ever tuned. Maybe this is attributed to the so-called true pitch tension rods.

The overtones are just about perfect. With the stock reverse dot head, this snare is very balanced. I was impressed with how responsive the snares were...usually I upgrade to Puresound wires, but this snare doesn't really need it.

I have the White Oyster wrap and the seam is well concealed near the throw off. The throw off itself isn't amazing but the strainer has a square on top so you can use a drum key to tension the wires while they're engaged. Nice little feature.

My 4 negative things about this snare are as follows:
    1) There are no reinforcement hoops. I realize that they choke out the drum a bit, but it would be nice to have them to make sure the drum stays round.
    2) On the inside, you can see bits of wood hanging out by the screws from drilling for the lugs. Not a huge deal, but I wish they had been cleaner about it. They could've at least sanded that out before added the lugs. At this price range, I would expect more attention to detail, mass produced or not.
    3) I would've liked a better throw off at this price range. The PDP limited edition Birch and Bubinga snares feature the DW mag throw offs, as do the Concept Series snares. The limited edition snares are also less than half the price.
    4) This is relatively expensive snare. You could get comparable snares with a "major" brand name that probably have a better tuning range. I'm one for versatility, so it would be nice to be able to get that fat, throaty sound.

Buy it if you can afford it! Out of the 7 snare drums I own (Mapex, Gretsch, Spaun, PDP [3 of them] and a custom one), this has become my go-to, all purpose snare. I will probably play this one in live situations the most, as it's among the more versatile snares I have. Definitely worth a try!
