I have listened for over 30 yrs. to many wooden snares, exotic to mundane. This may not be DW but the specs are the same. The maple hoops give a rich side stick response. In a small jazz venue you can play with a conga/bongo hand style Latin licks with no broken blood vessels. The throw off is less than superior but it works fine. Buy a perfect state of the art throw off for the price of this drum if you need perfection. This snare is a joy. I have had it recorded and the definitive "doink" metal shell of my 68'Ludwig Supra-phonic is not missed.I can get timbales for that. This snare produces a quick pop dead center.-- Not as dry as birch but maple projects when you need it. I am very pleased and have played Philharmonic Percussion, R&B, Country, "John Henry Bonham" Rock, Little Feat, Dead and on and on. I am glad I bought this little jewel--- Still learning the possibilities. The craftsmanship is less than personal but very effective and simple. Clean cuts----------machined well but not (state of the art bearing edges)this drum is very responsive at 1/5 the price of say, Anton Fig's signature series snare utilizing the same principle. I would suggest trying it.

I bought this snare as a replacement to the snare that came with my Mapex kit. This snare has a habit of loosing it's lugs on the bottom (snare) side after. I even went out and bought nylon lug washers/locks and there are still lugs on the floor below this snare after I play.

Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
This snare is an excellent drum. It has a nice crack to it right out of the box. At first I couldn't find the tuning I liked but once I found it I was blown away. I'm not much of a long sustain kind of guy so I used a moongel to dampen the sound of the stock batter that comes with it (single ply/ medium). It has a really nice punch and great snare response. For those of you who like to tune with the drum dial, I have my stock batter at about 87, which is a little on the higher side. I tuned the resonant pretty tight (around an A pitch) and it sounds great. Also the wood hoops give a distinct rim-shot sound and look amazing. The only negative I have is the longer sustain, but with new heads that shouldn't be a problem. Also, the lugs were a little difficult to turn at higher tensions, but adding some lubrication should do the trick.
Grab one for your practice kit or for another great sound to add to your collection, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
I just couldn't wait to review this snare. I just put on an Aquarian High Velocity reverse dot Head and PDP did the rest. Went off like a cannon. Punchy, flat sound. Everything I was looking for at a price that is far below the quality of this snare. I would expect to pay 6 to 800 dollars for a drum at this level. I plan on recording it asap. Rockin snare for the price of a student drum. BUY IT!! NOW!!! Oh yeah, my wife says it doesn't match my kit. I think I couldn't find a better fit. PDP ROCKS
Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
This is a very good snare. Not the best probably for the price, but pretty close. This snare is extremely versatile ranging from Lower toned Rock to Higher toned Gospel sound. The wood hoops definately give it a warmer tone and crack to it. I just recently put Metal hoops on it and it changes the sound a bit to more of a deep pop rather than the warmer crack you get with wood hoops. The Overall Mapel Wood Body gives provides most of the deep warmth to it though. Great Snare. I would say continue looking around though to what best fits your style.
People Always tell me how beautiful they think this snare is. Gorgeous Maple Natural Color. Looks Even More Sharp With Dicast Metal Hoops on it.

Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
Great drum. I did a trade up and this drum is bloody amazing! Such a warm sound. Sounds like a great recording of a snare with sweet compression, but it's all natural. The drum is CANNON!! It cuts through the chaos, but not with high end and ring, but with shear power! Only one complaint, and it sounds dumb, but if you have the snares too tight, the throwoff doesn't work properly, but this can be fixed if you just loosen em' up a bit!Buy it!
Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
What else can you say about this snare but OMG. The sound is so fresh and clean even with the factory heads, but when you get a chance please replace them they dont last long. If you are a true drummer this is a must have snare. and the price can not be beat.
Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
this snare fit the highest qualifications that were nessesary to complete the taste of satisfying my ear. Its a pleasent look that quit frequntly make me stop and realize its true buety. do get it.
Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
This is a good value for the price but I find it too loud and somewhat harsh. It has more ring then I like but this can be controlled with dampening. On the positive side, it is really beautiful!I would recommend this snare for rock and metal and those who want reasonable quality with a low price.
Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
I bought this drum over two years ago. I looked hard and researched for a while. Warmest sound I've heard. Great feel, beautiful looks. Durable, have not had one issue with hoop wear, lugs, anything. I have a friend who is the drummer for a national country band on radio who uses my kit several times a year on fly dates and he loves this snare. Actually requests it. You will not be sorry. I'm buyng a second for a vintage kit I am refinishing now. You can spend more but you can't get a more verssatile snare in my opinion. If you are a snare nut you should ad one of these to your collection.
Comments about PDP Maple Snare with Wood Hoops:
I was not disappointed. This snare drum looks, sounds and feels wonderful. This is a great addition to any drummer's snare drum collection. I think PDP drums are a great value in general.
