I have been searching for years for a block sound that is dry, responsive, natural (woody), and pitched in a way that it won't be masked by other elements. Pearl got it right with this series, and offer it in three pitches, voiced similarly to agogo bells so that these can be used as part of a clave accompaniment.

It is a shame that most vendors don't give accurate information on this series. Several responses below incorrectly identify this as the large block (PAB-100). This is in fact the PAB-50 medium block. I had to go to another vendor to order the PAB-20 small block, which just arrived and now gives me a nice agogo pair with the PAB-50 that I bought on this site last year. The PAB-100 is much lower pitched and wouldn't fit into as many contexts.

Although I am using these as wooden agogo bells, I think their main intent is to be used as a more organic and warm alternative to those plastic jam blocks that have become so popular.

I was all excited to get my wood block...and got a terrible sound from it but after futher review...I found you can produce a decent sound... but the sweet spot is small...a 2 to 3 inch radius in the center of block... out by the edge...best sounds produced by hitting it with the side of the stick on edge of block...I still like one piece blocks better...but I wanted to give this product more of a fair review...and I use it today.

Comments about Pearl AshTone Wood Block:

Pretty good sound from this block. Nice loud "TOK." Wish the opening on the clamp was larger to fit larger mounts (won't fit on a Mapex tom arm, for example). Other than that, it's a well-made block.

Comments about Pearl AshTone Wood Block:

I really like this one. Used to be they had a large and small, looks like Big P settled on just the large. Anyway, you can whack it a dozen different ways, and get a dozen different sounds from it. I know there are a lot of decent plastic blocks out there, and many who swear by them. This is just a really nice block I personally think is worth having, if you are going to use a woodblock on your kit. Built nice, looks nice, priced nice.

I mounted this on my Djembe for accents... awesome, I have had so many complements at gig's because of the projection and sound of this block.I am using the Lo version, I don't have the other two, but am considering ordering them.

Comments about Pearl AshTone Wood Block:

I was kind of skeptical at first because I am NOT a fan of things made by pearl...But, I have to admit this wood block cuts through the whole band and is small enough I had no problem mounting it on my set. It is aggressive while it can be sensitive. Adds a great accent to the music.

                About Me Experienced

Comments about Pearl AshTone Wood Block:

Despite the description saying this is a large, low tone block, it is actually the PAB50 medium sized middle tone block of the set. I purchased this thinking this was the low tone block and now I have a useless second PAB50. Not really worth returning after costs for shipping it back. Just a disappointment in a box.

Sounds like a wood block to me. It's true to get the full "tock" sound you have to hit the sweet spot which is smaller than a synthetic block, but big deal. sounds good, looks good. would love if it would mount to a tom tom horn, but oh well.
