Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

I've owned this brass piccolo snare for over ten years now. My drum is the older version - same shell and lugs, different badge.

I usually use it as a backup snare in case I break a string or have an issue with my main snare. I also use it as the main snare for quieter acoustic gigs, or for funk/pop gigs where the snare will be mic'ed and I'm after a short, bright, 'crack' sound.

Unlike some users, I prefer it tuned medium high, not 'cranked'. This gives a sound similar to a standard snare, but with a quicker snare response and less overall volume. I think the brass shell helps to give it a slightly warmer tone than other piccolos, but still less than full sized snares.

I often use the drum for small acoustic shows where my larger snares will be too loud. I can play at a comfortable level, the drum sounds quite loud and crisp to me, but doesn't project much volume to the audience. Good for churches, weddings, restaurants, etc.

When you hit the drum, the snares respond instantly, either due to the shorter distance or less air volume. You can really feel and hear the difference and this would make an excellent practice drum for rudimental playing.
When mic'd from above, there is more snare in the sound, perhaps because the snares are actually closer to the mic.

A final bonus with the 13" size is that your legs fit around it more easily. You can bring the hihat closer if you wish, or move the drum closer or slightly to the left.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this as an all-rounder, but it does certain things very well. This brass model is more versatile than some other piccolo snares.

Best Piccolo for the $$$

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

I've had this snare for about a year now and have had a lot of fun with it. You can fit it virtually anywhere for accents or in front of you if your in a small or mic'd enviroment, have a micro kit, play pop or thrash where zero resonance is a must. Admittedly, there are a few quirks such as it does sound best when it's marching style cranked. With this it would be better to have 2.3mm hoops instead of the 1.6's it comes with. I repaired a friends snare with that had 1.6's and the hoop was actually twisted around the tension rod head. Also, for those who say it covers any style, I feel it needs at least another two inches of depth before it would adapt to all kits. I currently have a remo clear controlled sound with a moongel on it for that loud, fast crack. It does come with the USA made remo ambassadors(coated batter and medium snare) so no need for the upgrade with purchase like other snares in this range. So if you're looking for a piccolo under $200, this is IT.

Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Dru

By DUQdrummer

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

We have this drum in our percussion studio, and have it with our three other concert snares drums, although this drum is a drumset snare drum. One of the grad students used it once on drumset for one piece, and this drum was very bright and cutting. Not overpowering, but a very beautiful sharp crack is what was heard by my ears. We don't have it tuned up really high, the way I would tune it (I have a piccolo snare fetish) and have some Black Swamp snare wires on it, so the sound is probably different then the way it would be with the stock snare wires, but nonetheless, it is a very nice drum. I have a Tama Hand Hammered steel piccolo, and am looking into the Pearl steel piccolo, but this brass shelled piccolo would definitely be worth the price.

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

This snare is one of the best sounding piccolo snares around. I love it mostly because of it being a brass piccolo. It has a wonderful "ring" behind it (other musicians you know what I mean). The "crack" that comes from it is ear piercing, and high end. Overall, this is a great snare. I really recommend buying this. It's come to the point where I moved it from my aux snare, to my main snare! Go and get one now!

good piccolo snare with a little tuning

By Thunder

from Enterprise, Al

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

After tuning it up it has an incredible ring and crack. I would still like the pitch of the top and bottom heads a little higher. I am looking for a very quick and powerful pop and snap with little or no ring. I am very pleased anyways. This is a good sounding snare for the price. It makes a good primary snare or secondary snare as well.

The best piccolo all around

By Ucantbemesorry

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

This snare is great, I use it in my youth group nights at church and it just cuts right through everything. I use it as my primary for its nice little sound. It can be used in any musical scenario. I have used a Ludwig maple piccolo but it doesn't compare to this one!

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

I purchased this snare as a backup, and to have a different sound compared to my maple snare. The look, sound, and quality were great on this drum, but the only problem I had was the volume, it was just too quiet. While it does cut through, and sounds great it just doesn't compare to my maple. Needless to say, I returned it.

        Another snare for your collection

        By MolokaiRider

        from Hawaii

        See all my reviews

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

It does what a piccalo snare should do by creating a nice higher pitched head sound, with a lot of snare sound. Not really a "crack", but more of a "snap" of snare wire, similar if you were to loosen the wires, pull them away from the head and let them snap back. Fairly sensitive drum, comes with a good coated ambassador head, and string mounted snare wires rather than straps. Not the easiest to tune, but what drum is? Does not stay in tune long if used as a main. I like the brass shell, very asthetically attractive. You will need to make sure your snare stand can accomodate the 13 inch size, and also that it can be extended high enough. Some snare stands simply will not work. To get a decent rim shot sound, you need to place the butt of you stick in the usual spot half way to the center of the drum. Since the drum is a smaller diameter, you will not get the volume since it's harder to get as solid of a stroke as a 14 inch drum. Please note, I'm being overly critical, overall this is a good drum for the money, but may not be the best choice as a primary. Excellent secondary or as a tool in your snare arsenol. Fun to crank up tight with a little ring and add to reggae or funk as an effect.

        Pearl Brass Piccolo Snare

        By Dong

        from Atlanta ,GA

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

I bought this snare as a backup for my broken snare shell and torn snares. It surprized me how well this snare sounded when I put on my remo ambassador white coated snare heads. It sounded better when I tuned it with my gibralter high torque key. I do recommend this snare to any professional or studio drummer.

Comments about Pearl B1330 Brass Piccolo Snare Drum:

Just bought this snare at a local music store. Put it on a stand and played some rudiments and was amazed. I didn't have a lot of money but got it anyway. This is a great drum for people who like the sound of metal drums but the ring of this drum, unlike steel, is actually quite pleasing. Great for the money. The maple one is good also but I prefer the Brass of the two. It's a lot brighter and snapier.
