Pearl

An e-drum kit featuring real shells and drum hardware that can be converted to an acoustic drum set.

The Pearl e-Pro Live Electronic Acoustic Drum Set includes a 20 x 12" kick; 10 x 6-1/2 and 12 x 7", and 14 x 8" rack toms; 14 x 4-1/2" snare; 12" EPC2 crash; 3-zone EPC2 14" ride; and a set of EPC2 12" hi-hats.

Pearl e-Pro Live is a revolutionary electronic drum set that looks, feels, and sounds like real acoustic drums. Never before has today's drummer been offered the limitless sonic capability and realistic feel of electronic drums on a drum set built with real drum shells and real drum set hardware.

Real look
Pearl e-Pro Live looks like real drums because the appearance of your gear is important. It's a statement about who you are as a performer. Most drummers would rather be seen playing real drums, and not a collection of practice pads.

Real sizes
No more playing on small black 8" pads. Pearl e-Pro Live features 10" x 6-1/2", 12" x 7", and 14" x 8" rack toms with a 20" x 12" bass and 14" x 4-1/2" snare with white heads.

Real hardware
The foundation of Pearl e-Pro Live starts with the modified Icon Rack. The rack will accommodate adding more drums and cymbals. The tom arms, shells, cymbal holders, and rack are all covered by Pearl's Lifetime Warranty.

Real drum shells
Pearl e-Pro Live features 6-ply poplar shells along with robust drum hardware and durable drum finishes.

Real feel
Real feel is the next important ingredient of Pearl e-Pro Live. Whether you're practicing or performing, Pearl believes playing electronic drums should feel as much like playing acoustic drums as possible. Playing traditional electronic drums with tightly configured small pads forces you to alter your playing style. e-Pro Live drums are sized and configured exactly like acoustic drums for a natural and real feel.

Acoustic shift
Truly, Pearl e-Pro Live is two kits for the price of one. e-Pro Live is made with real drums, so turning your kit into a great sounding acoustic drum set is as easy as 1-2-3. One, remove the top hoop and the Tru-Trac head. Two, put on a regular drumhead and replace the top hoop. Three, tune and play!

EPC2
Traditional rubber EPC2 cymbals are included in this kit, including a 14" 3-zone Ride, 12" Crash, and a set of super-responsive 12" hi-hats.

Tru-Trac drumheads
Pearl's Tru-Trac electronic drumheads feature dual zones that reproduce all of the intricacies a drummer hears when playing acoustic drums. The smooth coating on the heads makes moving from drum to drum fast and easy. The formula used to create Tru-Trac Heads produces a feel virtually identical to acoustic drums.

Real sound
The ultimate goal of a drum module is to reproduce the real sound of drums. None of these great components couldn reach their full potential without rich drum and percussion sounds generated from the r.e.d.box drum module (r.e.d. stands for Real Electronic Drums). The r.e.d.box features 8 sliders, 100 user-programmable kits, USB connectivity, many popular global effects, MIDI in/out, two main outputs, and two AUX outputs.

Internal memory
The r.e.d.box has 128MB of RAM. The full memory is used to accommodate the original acoustics of 1,000 High-Definition sounds and 100 High-Definition kits. The sound library includes acoustic and vintage drums, electronics from beat machines to modern digital and a variety of orchestral, concert and world percussion instruments.

Memory switch
One of the most unique features of the r.e.d.box module is the ability to flash the memory of the module and replace the Original Acoustics with one large and lush-sounding kit. A few easy steps and you'll be on your way to playing premium kits on your Pearl e-Pro Live from the best drum sampling software companies in the world. Specially designed kits are available for preview and download from Toontrack, BFD, Ocean Way, Steven Slate, Sonic Reality, and Virtual Drum Line.

Comments about Pearl e-Pro Live Electronic Acoustic Drum Set:

In search of a new E-drum experience I decided on a Pearl E Pro Live. I had watched all of the demo videos with Raymond Massey, who is in fact an exceptional drummer and pitch man for Pearl. Equally convincing was Pearl's own Gene Okamoto who describes why this E kit is unique and demonstrates in online videos how to assemble the kit when it arrives to your home. Genes's product knowledge and friendly manner made the decision for me to purchase this kit an easy one, sight unseen. This kit looks like fun!
Now I'm no stranger to E-drums having owned Roland, TD-6, TD-12, TD-9, and TD-15. I like the Roland and I still use the TD-9 and 15 daily. But I remain open minded for a feature or capability that the Roland may lack.
THE Good:
The Pearl E- Pro Live arrived on my front porch in four boxes undamaged. This kit came very well packaged ! I was very impressed with the care that Pearl took to make sure this kit gets to its new home in pristine condition. Lots of tissue paper and bubble wrap. Nice job Pearl!!! Setting up this kit was fun for me. Having watched Gene Okamoto's video the day before took out any guess work and I barely had to glanced at the instructions to set up the hardware. The rack is heavy and robust. The cymbal stands are nicely finished, The drums have an attractive maple fade wrap, and the whole package looks nice when its all set up. I have to say that my expectations were pleasantly exceeded with the overall quality of the drums and hardware. Again nice job Pearl.
The Not so good:
The drum heads are called TruTrac and described by Gene Okamoto as feeling like a real drum head. ? It turns out that they are made of hard rubber and fastened to a plastic backing plate.( I'm feeling like my bubble may pop). The virtues of this design could be debated as feeling like a real drum and better than a mesh head with less bounce. In my opinion the TruTrac heads don't feel any better than any other rubber pad that I have ever played on including my Billy Gladstone practice pad that I got when I was 12 years old in 1971. The TruTrac heads are not dual trigger but rather trigger and switch.
I purchased the rubber and plastic cymbals with this Ekit. They are generic and sold under a few different name badges. The ride is dual zone and the crash is single zone with a choke edge. The Hihat is Rubber as well and easily upgraded to the brass type. They were about what I expected.
The Bad:
So now its time to test out this package, and Pearls Red Box Module (Red= Real Electronic Drums). The Red Box worked right out of the box with bearly any tweaking. I ran the V-2 update as per the instructions from my laptop into the USB port with no problem. The update provides 50 more programmed kits for a total of 150 kits. The first thing I noticed after playing some of the kits for a few minutes is there is a lot of delay (Latency) between stroke and speaker. OK so I then eliminated the mixer I was using and plugged in my earphones directly to the earphone jack on the red box. The delay is still there. For the next two days I tried numerous tweaks to remedy this latency to no avail. I changed the snare drum to a Roland mesh head , latency still there. Bummer!
I then replaced the RedBox module with a Roland TD-9 module that I have and now the latency is gone. I am left to conclude that the processor and sound engine in the Red Box module is too slow and choppy to emulate true drum sounds or performance. Equally annoying is the fact that there is not enough memory to support a "Lush sounding" kit and pre programmed kits at the same time. One must use memory switch software to make the change, ? Not a big deal but not the most convenient set up if performing. So in summation the Pearl Red Box turned out to be a BIG disappointment to an otherwise well marketed and well packaged E-kit. This package was introduced about four years ago so I'd be looking for an updated version of this kit soon. The Pearl E-Pro Live deserves a better module! I love Musicians Friend and will continue to shop! Love Pearl too! The engineers at Alesis have some work to do.......

Comments about Pearl e-Pro Live Electronic Acoustic Drum Set:

Normally not a fan of electronic drums, I found these drums to have the feel of a normal drum set, with more versatility. Best purchase I have ever made.
