The head makes all the difference for this drum. Maple shell produces a solid, crisp sound that has lots of projection. Smaller depth , however doesn't allow for a warm tone, but overall, a great sounding drum with a crisp attacking sound.
I`ve owned this snare for just about 3 years and it`s about the best that I`ve ever owned. It has a wide tuning range and can be used with a variety of batter heads. I`m currently using an Evans Powercenter with the reverse dot and a Hazy 300 snareside and it sounds great. The SMX is 6 ply Maple which is the same as the Masters MRX not the MMX (4 ply). If you could only have one snare drum this would be an excellent choice.
This snare had lots of sound and great effect. It really came alive and made songs sound even more excellent than before. I've been playing professionally for 10 years and have played 4 years before that as an amateur and this is the absolute, without a doubt the best snare I've ever played in my entire experience.
This is a great sounding snare. It has the perfect overtone and the finish is brilliant. It's a must buy!!
I love this snare the price is right. If your looking for a snare with great response and sound at a good price this is the snare. The deep sound of the snare really got me.
I've recently bought this snare, It took me like 5 minutes to "get it going" :D this snare is easy to tune, and has a nice sound, you can play various music styles :) the shell is the same as the MMX (masters maple) only the hoops differ :) so I think you get the best quality for the right price ;)
