I got this snare with my Pearl Vision Kit. When tuned high with a Genera Dry head, it has a good pop on stage and can put out some volume. The problem is keeping it in tune. With regular maintenance, its still hard to keep it sounding good, while the hardware sticks and/or comes loose pretty quickly. Not a bad beginner snare for a package deal, but an upgrade would be nice for the gigging musician.
I play lots and lots of drums, professionally and for fun in some bands. I LOVE this snare. I use it as my main snare, alongside my Pearl VSX kit, and Sabian AAX stage cymbals and custom ride. It's rad. Really good, clear sound, and a good sustain. It's got so much sensitivity, so you can play it soft, and hard hits get good cracks.(If you like less sustain, you can throw a moongel/zero ring on and you've got a totally different snare!)Put on whatever skin is your favorite and you're ready to rock.
I got this snare stock with my VLX set, and I was vastly dissapointed in it. It can get ONE okay sound, and other than that is entirely horrible. The hardware on this drum is horrible, and it dents and falls apart like you wouldn't believe. And it requires INTENSE muffling. I played one gig with it, and it's already falling apart. Go with the Masters MCX or the Pork Pie Little Squealer... Or at least... don't buy a steel shell...
