Comments about Pearl VSX 5-Piece New Fusion Shell Pack:

Bottom line - these are beautiful drums with pretty good sound but poor build quality. While I've played on several kits, I'm directly comparing these to kits I've actually owned: Pearl Export (80's), Yamaha Stage Custom (early 90's), Yamaha Beech Custom (late 90's). I've had the VSX kit for about a month and played them as often as possible to give a fair assessment.

Let's talk looks. Right out of the box, I was impressed with the appearance. The strata black wrap looks even better than I thought it would. It has a hint of blue that I didn't expect and appeals to me personally. The lugs, hoops, mounts, etc. are all shiny and APPEAR well-made. The heads for all of the drums are much better than I expected for an entry/mid-level kit. The quality reminds me of an Evans setup I had on my Beech Custom (Kick - EQ3/EQ2, Toms - G2/G1, Snare - Uno 58/300 Hazy).

How about sound? Tuning is important to me because I refuse to use any dampening except for recording. Luckily, it was a breeze, except for the snare, and I soon had that deep punch on the kick and warm open sound on the toms that I was looking for, very comparable to the Yamahas. The snare is a bit fussy about it's range, which seems naturally lower than I like, but I found a decent spot that was tight and crisp with nice overtones, if a LITTLE choked. I still prefer my Tama brass and Yamaha Bamboo snares, though.

Quality? Unfortunately, my return to Pearl drums has been a bit disappointing. While the wrap and hardware quality SEEM fine, the rubber meets the road with the shell, and it's not good news. Out of the box, I noticed a small area on the floor tom where the inner ply is peeling away from the rest of the shell. (See the pic below.) It doesn't affect the sound, nor does it appear to be spreading, but it still concerns me. Musician's Friend was more than willing to work with me on a return, but it just isn't worth it to me at this price point. I opted for a minor price break instead. Pearl, on the other had, wouldn't even return my call about warranty service.

To top it off, I just noticed a similar defect on the 10" tom, but, given the defect's smaller size, I could have just overlooked it in my haste to jam. Again, it doesn't appear to affect the sound quality. Still, very disappointing. My old Exports took a beating for over a decade and never bucked. I have no confidence these will.

Overall, these are nice-looking, nice-sounding drums, but the quality, in particular the shell quality, is such that you need to be careful. If you can, I'd spend a bit more and get a different model or even a different brand.

Comments about Pearl VSX 5-Piece New Fusion Shell Pack:

Not sure where to start. The finish is beautiful even though it's a wrap; but who cares? It was only 400. The kit sounds great, even with the horrible Pearl stock heads. I haven't swapped out for a nice pair of Evans so it'll probably sound way better after that and I tune the heads a bit. Overall I'm very happy with this buy. Also, it says fusion but it's a 22" kick, 16" floor, 10" 12" rack toms. The steel snare is nice too. ;)
