I bought this snare to go with my pork pie custom kit. I have a 14 x 5 porky with my kit and wanted something with a little more life. The snare is great. Do not expect low warm tones. This has a fast attack and a beautiful (greenday) crack to it. It does have a little ring to it...its brass. You can minimize that by putting a powerstroke 3 on the batter and a hazy 300 on the res head. I Love this drum and use it use every gig. If you want warm and deep this is not your drum.. go maple. if you want fast and an amazing CRACK! this is it baby!!

I fully understand snare drum preference is a matter of personal choice, but I just don't get the hype here with this drum. If I had to sum up a good "all around" snare drum, it would be one that speaks well in a variety of applications, not just modern trends and here is where I believe this snare drum falls WAY short. First off, people complain about snare "ring" and head vibration resonance, often opting for a drier head selection. Of course this is a practical application but if you are a session drummer looking for a brass snare drum to cover not only funk and rock in the studio but also REGGAE and perhaps jazz, you'd most likely seek out a drum that sings in it's overtones and resonance. You will not find that in this drum. The patina finish does "dull" out certain frequencies and leaves this drum not only non-bright but almost dead and that is with a coated ambassador as a batter. That will work well if you are dropping a linear hip hop track but what about when you want to break out the one drop? Or think the Chad Sexton, "All Mixed Up" snare sound...you can't get it with this drum. It goes back to the old adage "it's better to have it and be able to REDUCE what is already there, than to not have it at all and not be able to access it". It isn't just the patina on this drum that affects it's life....the dreaded CONTROL RING seamed into the center of the shell is the biggest contributing factor. The Ludwig Black Beauty is a different animal and a drum that sounds great with these rings that are often falsely marketed as "projection" rings. Completely LAUGHABLE. These rings are added to the shell to add stability and integrity, PERIOD. If anything, they hinder the natural resonance of a shell and dry out the sound. If you wrapped duct tape around a drum shell, it would not vibrate the same....It is the same concept here. And the low profile lugs do nothing to counteract this sonic property. I've owned a coveted Pearl Ferrone snare drum that was a BB imitation and same problem...could not get that drum to work in multiple situations. Luddys are spun so maybe that is why they do sound so good. Not sure but when I went to demo-ed this drum (with the intent on buying it), I was EXTREMELY dissapointed. Is it an OK drum? Sure, but it's limited in it's application and does not stand out from the crowd IMO. In fact, next two metal 13" Yamaha drums, I would say in came in third. This is one man's opinion but there are comparison vids of this drum out there on the web...search and ye' shall find...and see/hear for yourself just how unspectacular this drum is compared to others in a line-up.

          Pork Pie Patina snare

          By JJddrum

Comments about Pork Pie Brass Patina Snare Drum:

One great snare!!!! I've owned more exotic ($$$) snares that did NOT have the sound this thing does. PP custom snares are a nice touch too! I put an Evans Dry on it, cranked it slightly, and wow!! I played a very expensive hand hammered snare and struggled to get what this PP had right out of the box,,,I did actually laugh when I played it.

Comments about Pork Pie Brass Patina Snare Drum:

This is a very nice snare. I am a big fan of deep snares and this one does not disappoint. It has a very crisp attack and a great low end. It has a great snappy quality to it while retaining a very full, "meaty" sound. Not to mention is looks very sharp. Great snare. Highly recommended.

Comments about Pork Pie Brass Patina Snare Drum:

This snare is amazing. It sounds great in any tuning (as long as you know how to balance the tuning of your resonant head and batter to eliminate ring). It loud and cracks great even at low tunings. All hardware is great quality and the finish looks beautiful. I would highly recommend this snare for any drummer in any genre of music. Great Product. Great Price.

          Brass Patina snare rules

Comments about Pork Pie Brass Patina Snare Drum:

Had this for about three months. With the heads tuned medium-tight to tight, it has a really sweet crack, balanced overtones and not too much ring. Rimshots are some of the loudest I've ever heard, and sidestick hits are fairly clean. Experimenting with lower tunings, it has more ring and doesn't quite offer the fat sound of a wood shell. It looks sweet, each patina finish is different which gives it that hand-crafted appeal. The price tag doesn't sting either, considering Pork Pie is an upper-level drum maker. The hoops/lugs/throwoff are great quality, the drum is sensitive and versatile yet loud and full of presence, just throw some decent heads on and get crackin'!

          Great Brass Snare.

          By MDL397

          from Long Island, NY

Comments about Pork Pie Brass Patina Snare Drum:

This drum is awesome. Once you find a sweet pitch for the bottom head you can crank the top for a tight cracking ring or tune down and throw on a gel for that nice balanced marching bandish brass sound. Each one has different patina shades also. The one in the picture, the one in the store and the one that got shipped to me all look different. The only brass snares I like as much would be the Black Beauties and such...which are twice the price...this drum is worth every penny.
