I am a drummer and got this set for my Grandson. As I put it together I was amazed at the quality for the price paid. Realize that it is not a professional set of drums, and is made for kids. That being said, they are chromed nicely, no sharp edges. The lugs and bolts are threaded well. The shells are laminated wood, and finished very well. The stands and tom mounts have locks just like the larger sets. The bass legs are an octagon no slip design which keeps them in place. The hardware is pretty heavy for this size set. The snare drum has a functioning adjustable throw off that actually takes the snares away from the bottom head. The bass pedal and the hi-hat pedals are a little thin but are both chain drive. They could have made these pedals just a bit heavier without added cost. The bass drum beater is adjustable and four sided. It has a nice spring back feel. Included are a drum key and a pair of child size drumsticks. The threads don't strip out when tuning the drums. The finishing touches are pretty nice for the price. The drum heads are adequate for a start up set of drums. They are all one ply clear except for the front bass head of course. They will dent, but they tune well. It helps to muffle them a bit with an internal cloth band or tape. They seem to tune lower without a marching drum ring if you do. This would have been a straight 5 star review if not for the one weak spot that all child size drums have in common....The Cymbals !The cymbals are paper thin and sound like a pie tin being hit. The hi-hat cymbals don't close together properly right out of the box. After just a few strikes, the crash is pretty bent up. If they would make them just 1/32" thicker they could solve this problem. With that being said, they are still DEFINITELY worth the money. It is a set that a child will be able to actually play for a few years to see if he or she has the interest to move up to a full size set. The cymbals and drum heads should be replaced as soon as enough interest is shown by your child. I would say it's best for ages 3 to 7 or 8. When their feet can reach the pedals of a full size set....it's time to move on !

Upon pulling this kit out of the box, it was clear to me that it was cheaply built. It didn't quite have the feel of a toy drum kit, but neither was it a solid instrument. The tone of the drums, once tuned, was terrible, and the hardware extraordinarily flimsy. One piece even arrived broken--a weld on the drum pedal had broken in transit. That was enough for me to send the whole kit back and start a new search. Anyone looking for a quality junior drum kit should check out both PDP, which is DW's junior kit, or Ludwig. I went with Ludwig, and am pleased with the quality of the hardware and tone of the drums (both great, for a junior kit).

For what it's worth, I'm a drummer who plays a custom built kit (built by George Jacobs in San Francisco) as well as a Yamaha DTXtreme (the original). Trust me, the Pulse kit is not worth even $50.

Comments about Pulse 5-Piece Junior Drum Set:

      Good for what it is.
This is a real drum kit only smaller. Real wood, real wrap covering and real hardware. Yeah the heads are not the best buy you can change them if you want or need to. 10, 12, 13 and 16 inch heads. the cymbals are not the best sounding either but remember what you're buying. This kit is for a child, not a cocktail kit. My 3 year old granddaughter loves it! After beating on my drums she told me to get some her size. So I did. I bought them from the stupid deal of the day. Stupid deal of the day ROCKS!

      Great Set for Kids

Comments about Pulse 5-Piece Junior Drum Set:

I got this kit for my 8 year old daughter. She had been playing on a few of my sets but it was obvious while watching her that the setup was just too high. I found this set while browsing and took a shot.

We were not disappointed at all. It's perfectly sized for her and her siblings (6 and 10). They look incredible (wine red). Setup was easy, but take note that there are no instructions. Only things requiring assembly were the high-hat stand and putting the heads on the bass and floor tom. Shouldn't take more than an hour. Look at zoomed in pics online if you want to know where the hardware goes.

A little time tuning and the toms sound great. The snare could use a heavier head, but works none the less. Put a bath towel in the bass before you install the heads to make sure you get a nice thud with no ringing.

The cymbals will never win any accolades, but are great to start. I would rather she learns how to properly hit these cymbals than something more expensive. My recommendation would be to get a starter pack of Zildjians (or whatever brand you prefer) after your kid shows committed interest in playing.

I got it for two hundred and think it was well worth it. Seeing my daugther jump on her kit and start wailing is proof enough for me that it's a good set.

      Enjoy.

Comments about Pulse 5-Piece Junior Drum Set:

I am very familiar with the Pulse product. I have several students with younger siblings. This set is the one that gets them out of the box and running. The set up and configueration of the toms is perfect for them. Down the road, change the heads and hardware, and you have what we call in the industry, a club set. In answer to the cons that it needed to be assembled or there were no instructions; add a zero behind this price and you will still need to assemble it and there will be no instructions. You got a future drummer on your hands, don't think, buy this kit.

we had to assemble the drum set with no instruction or a device to tune it with. no experience in assembling drums, even for an experienced drummer its not easy to tune. my son is 9 and learning, not a good start. now i need a device to tune it. other then that the set fits us fine.

When ordering this set for my daughter, I thought it would be a nice toy partially due to the low price of the product. I was quite shocked by the relatively high quality of the hardware, and how closely it replicates my full sized set.
