What is not mentioned is that the rotary tom isbased upon the African ?talking drum? and wasdeveloped by the US Navy in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a method of ship-to-ship communication between submerged U-boats. The standard carbon arc searchlight proved ineffective at a depth below 50 feet. When instead the underwater telephone became the preferred vehicle, the rotary toms became redundant and were soon surplussed. Declassification of the device in the early 1970s, and the discovery that a single ply mylar drumhead was nearly as effective as the previously used black rhino hymen (very rare and expensive) led the rotary tom to be adopted for many commercial drummer applications. The sound of the rotary tom rack, with agogo bellsattached, became a standard in Disco music. With the fitting disappearance of Disco in the early 1980s, the instrument was hidden away and soon forgotten. This is not a device for everyone! Sit-downdrummers who know only ?fast and loud? and for whom ?finesse? is a new French drug, should not use the rotary tom. If you have the need to occasionally hit something and do not wish to go to jail, you should answer a simple question ... ?Would my balls look better with little mirrors glued on them?? If the answer is ?No!?, you should should consider using therotary tom.

I think this product is very good for its price. My son plays these a lot and likes them very much. They are about 2 years old. There is one big problem with this set that can not be over looked and that is if you need replacement heads the 6 inch size tom is unavailable making the set pretty much useless. I have been to hundreds of web sites and it can't be found. Pulse does not have a web site to go to and ask any questions. Just some thoughts before you buy this item. Jim

        Roto-Toms

        By Rick Smith

        from South Texas

I like the "Hunky" feel, like solid steel, I like the mounting system too. The materials are flawless in my toms. I mounted them on a Gibralter rack about the stock Toms on my Pearl forums. I like the choice they offer as I play several different Genres of music in 1 show.
I find the very playable... I have 8 of them and I have tuned them to range from Timpany to "coffee can".
Over-all construction in my opinion is very good. Heads are thin and I replaced the heads pretty quick, as they are seceptable to divot & break if I get rowdy. (Which I have been known to do.)
Excellent value to enlarge your sound and still be able to afford a cup of coffee...

        Great for the price

I am a novice that would consider to be close to intermediate with drums. These toms are fine for most that are looking to add to their set. I am more than satisfied with the product. There ARE beater heads available. There are NO plastic pieces. Yes, the metal is made from low grade but get the job done. Those that are bashing, that AREN'T professionals (get paid well for their talent), need to get over themselves.

        there are replacement heads here

        By 97 REB

        from Charlotte, NC

This is a fine addition to an intermediate set. To the guy from Pittsburgh, there are replacement heads on this very website for 6 inch toms. I don't know if that is new or not as I have not needed them before.

Fair priced additon to trap set

        By John-XjPPI

        from Daytona Beach, Florida

If one is searching for an affordable addition to their drum set the Pulse Roto-toms are a great buy. Of course there are more expensive and better quality alternatives. The design of these drums and stand is innovative and practical. Regardless of other reviews the heads are easily accessable, in all three sizes, from Attack Drumheads. Assembly is idiot proof and one does not adjust the track assembly to acheive different tuning; simply rotate the head. Stand and hardware are well designed, heavy material and durable.Bottom line, these drums sound good.

i bought these to expand my kit. Once I saw the price I knew i had to get them. I've had experience with the remo roto toms, and these are just as good. the stock heads sound so good that i kept them on! Overall these are a great buy to expand the set!

        bad purchase

        By n00b h8tr

        from campbellton N,B

I bought these as an add-on expansion pack. I say no good, I got a whole new stand and spare heads from my fathers old set they are remo's so put some good heads and new stand and you'll be great.

        Cheap addition

        By MasterDrummer

from corner of first and first

Bought this about a month ago. The instructions are not clear so get ready to spend time assembling. Also remove the styro foam underneath the drum heads. Aside from that and weak stand, replace the heads.

        Awesome

        By Kurseval

        from Wisconsin

These toms are brilliant. Don't be fooled by the price or brand. For Pulse, these toms are outstanding. One thing is the stand totally sucks. When you tighten down the toms, and loosen them back up, it leaves a black circle on the bar.Overall, these toms are just wonderful. I recommend them to drummers of all skills. I'm trying to go through the heads ASAP so I can replace them with Remo Ambassadors.
