What is not mentioned is that the rotary tom isbased upon the African ?talking drum? and wasdeveloped by the US Navy in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a method of ship-to-ship communication between submerged U-boats. The standard carbon arc searchlight proved ineffective at a depth below 50 feet. When instead the underwater telephone became the preferred vehicle, the rotary toms became redundant and were soon surplussed. Declassification of the device in the early 1970s, and the discovery that a single ply mylar drumhead was nearly as effective as the previously used black rhino hymen (very rare and expensive) led the rotary tom to be adopted for many commercial drummer applications. The sound of the rotary tom rack, with agogo bellsattached, became a standard in Disco music. With the fitting disappearance of Disco in the early 1980s, the instrument was hidden away and soon forgotten. This is not a device for everyone! Sit-downdrummers who know only ?fast and loud? and for whom ?finesse? is a new French drug, should not use the rotary tom. If you have the need to occasionally hit something and do not wish to go to jail, you should answer a simple question ... ?Would my balls look better with little mirrors glued on them?? If the answer is ?No!?, you should should consider using therotary tom.

I think this product is very good for its price. My son plays these a lot and likes them very much. They are about 2 years old. There is one big problem with this set that can not be over looked and that is if you need replacement heads the 6 inch size tom is unavailable making the set pretty much useless. I have been to hundreds of web sites and it can't be found. Pulse does not have a web site to go to and ask any questions. Just some thoughts before you buy this item. Jim

I received a set of these for christmas, and i love the sound but i already have to replace the heads they are thin, I have not put any holes in them but they are wavey and wrinkly. They are built very well just the heads are not any good..

Awesome

By Kurseval

These toms are brilliant. Don't be fooled by the price or brand. For Pulse, these toms are outstanding. One thing is the stand totally sucks. When you tighten down the toms, and loosen them back up, it leaves a black circle on the bar.Overall, these toms are just wonderful. I recommend them to drummers of all skills. I'm trying to go through the heads ASAP so I can replace them with Remo Ambassadors.

awesome drums

they are friggin awesome. ive had them about three years now and have only had to replace the heads once because they still sound good. i have evans G2 clear heads on the 8 and 10 inches, but i still have the original head on the 6 cause it just sound better than the double ply g2. But yeah, theyre great for playing just about everything, from Rush to the Neville Brothers, so if you are thinking about it, buy these. I personally think Pulse is ripping themselves off.

I got my frist set of Remo rototoms (6",8",10") back in 1979 for $119! The Pulse set is a great buy, very little difference in quality from the Remos.Tip: Remo CS black dots sound best on these drums!

They sound great, but.......

These rotary toms sound great! Compared to "high end" roto toms these sounds just as good or better. The heads that came with them actually sound fairly nice for stock heads. But replacing them wouldn't hurt. But....The stand is complete trash, it doesn't hold up and just when you think something is tight, it snips your finger! This has happened many times =/But it's also possible I just got a bad one out of the bunch =/I just replaced the stand a few days ago and now it holds great.Get this! But.. replace the stand!

Impressed, but not surprised.

By ~The Drummer From He!!~

the Pulse Rotary Tom set is farely good considering most Pulse products are crap. I wasn't surprised at the way they sounded( like crap), but if you slap some Remo moon jell on them and duct tape in the center, it should both make them sound better & prolong the life of the heads. New heads isn't always the answer. I made them good for cheap, you can too.

Like a rock star--tempermental but good

By Smith-u-f0G

See all my reviews

This is a good buy, but be cautiously optimistic. The 6" drum is a little angel--I love the pop. The 8" was a disaster--I tightened it too much and broke one of the supporting rings, so that didn't work. The 10" is tempermental--you can't kill the bongo-ish ring no matter how hard you try unless you put a piece of cardboard between the head and the frame of the drum. Also, the bottom metal ring on mine WON'T STOP VIBRATING regardless of how securely I mount the drum. (I thought I'd just stripped a bolt, but changing bolts accomplished nothing.) The stand itself is iffy--good balance and lots of freedom to adjust, but I can never quite tighten it enough to kill the rattle of hardware. (Speaking of which, put washers on the bolts or they can cut into the stand unmercifully.) All in all, it's a good product, meaning its bang is directly proportional to its buck.

Great Buy

I think these are an excellent buy. I have other remo roto-toms and these sound just as good. The stand is even very good quality! Hopefully they will not raise the price!
