Since purchasing this drum, I have to echo the reviewers here. The sound is absolutely phenomenal. It's unlike any acrylic drum I have ever owned, played or heard. That annoying 'pop' that usually accompanies acrylic is M.I.A. and what's left is simply a great sounding drum with amazing projection ability. However there is a major drawback. The quality control is a major bummer. It seems like after every third gig or practice either a tension rod falls off or a screw that holds the lug pops off inside of the drum, thus leaving me to take the head off, retighten the screw (but not too tight since it's acrylic). To be frank, it's quite frustrating to have paid this kind of money and receiving a product with such shaky durability, especially since 'durability' seems to be this company's mainstay adjective. In short, a great sound but at a cost; both fiscal and quality wise.
This is not your average acrylic snare drum. Granted, Pork Pie makes a snare drum for considerably less but as the old adage goes, 'you get what you pay for'. I have never liked acrylic snare drums but definitely saw their purpose for punk rock and their projection abilities in a live setting. Let me tell you first hand, this drum changed my entire view on acrylic snare drums. I was (and still am to a certain extent) a Ludwig Supraphonic freak. I think it's the best snare drum ever, I can pull a multitude of tones from it and I love it. But once I played this snare, all I wanted to do was rudiments and rolls. It just had a certain sound that my ears wanted more and more of, certainly not indicative of my previous outings with acrylic snares where I would hit it once and say 'yup, that's an acrylic drum alright'.This drum is unreal. You can go from a Dale Crover smack to a Stewart Copeland pop and it simply sounds amazing no matter what you do. Opinions may vary but this is my testimony that if you're in the market for an acrylic snare drum, this is the one.
I haved played drums for 47 years. I purchased this snare drum to play with my two other vintage Ludwig vintage Vistalite drum sets. The snare sounded good right out of the box . But the sound improved with the changing of the drum head from the RCI head that came on the drum to a clear power stroke 3 with a dot. This made the drum sound unbelievable! I also own a fibes acrylic and pork pie pig lite. This is truley the winner! The only trouble I had with this drum is It was used on two gigs and both times I had screws holding the tube lugs come loose and fall out into the drum. If your looking for the best sounding acrylic drum on the market this is it!
