Comments about Remo Black X Batter Drumhead:

I've been looking for a head that gives my snare a tight and snappy attack with a hint of ring. After I got this one stretched out and tuned up, it sounds perfect. It's got a great bounce to it also. Finally, it has good response. You don't have to bash it as hard as you can to get a nice loud hit.

Comments about Remo Black X Batter Drumhead:

Another great investment I've made was buying this snare head. I've tried every snare head on the market for Evans, and I still haven't found the sound I'm looking for out of a drumhead yet, but this specific head from Remo comes close.

This head has a LOT of tone in it, and I mean A LOT. It's almost overwhelming. Lower tunings with this drum head just doesn't mix well with my specific snare. I've become accustomed to the sound and messed around with the tunings and I've found this head shines when tuned fairly tight.

You get a decent amount of attack from this head if you tune it up, of coarse. The head doesn't leave any black residue all over your heads or cymbals, which is good. It matches my black snare all so well, I almost don't ever want to switch to a new head, lol.

This head is EXTREMELY durable, as Remo claims. I've had this head for 5 months now and it's still holding up and tuning well. There isn't a huge, gaping hole in the center of my snare head (like I usually get with single ply/double ply heads). There is a slight dip, but nothing to drastic.

It's a great drum head if your looking for a new sound out of your snare. It is certainly different sounding than most of the heads out there today and is very durable. I also got this head for a great price.

            Bit of an odd one

            By

            from Gloucestershire, UK

Comments about Remo Black X Batter Drumhead:

First off, this head certainly has the durability that Remo claim it does. However, I can't see the actual sound being what a lot of hard hitters want. The attack is a lot softer than you'd expect, and it's not massively articulate when you're playing fast rolls. It also produces a huge amount of overtones with a long sustain. I have 2 moongels on mine. However, it does mean that the head is lively and sensitive, if you're into progressive metal and do a lot of ghost notes on the snare it's practically perfect. I just think a lot of super-hard hitters would be going for the more dry sound.

Comments about Remo Black X Batter Drumhead:

I installed this head on a Sonor Force snare with emperor hazy, and when tuned low, it gives me a great punch with just the right amount of overtones. When playing slow songs and want a more dry sound, just slap on a moongel, and works perfect.

Best head for hard hitters wanting open tone

Comments about Remo Black X Batter Drumhead:

First off-durablity is AMAZING. if you cant make this head then well...you must have the most terrible technique ever. im muscular 225lbs and hit very hard in my metal/hard rock band and ive found this is the only head to use for my snare that lasts a while for me and then second of all-has a nice open ring to it. i love overtones, because it lets the drum sing while still having warmness as well. so, you have solid durablilty for the hardest of hitters, and will allow your snare sing and bite! can even be tuned low and fat if desired, so its overall best snare head in my opinion

            great tone, poor durability

            By

            from Raleigh NC

Comments about Remo Black X Batter Drumhead:

I have been playing this head for less than 2 months and it has great all-around tone and response, but it does not have extreme durability like they say it does. The two plies have already begun to separate in the center of the playing surface. The single-ply evans powercenter reverse dot that came stock on my snare held up better than this two ply head. The black X does have more tone though. If you blast heavily on a regular basis plan on replacing this head often...gonna try the Aquarian Hi-Velocity next.

            Responsive, warm and durable

            By

Comments about Remo Black X Batter Drumhead:

I wrote a negative review of a 12" Black Suede Emperor and wondered if it was a dud since it was the only dull, nonresponsive head I've had from Remo in 5 decades of playing. The Black X confirms that belief. I've used one on a Black Beauty and another on a Coliseum snare. Both sound resonant and warm. I tried one on a 14x10 Maple snare with die cast rims and it was punchy and durable at high tension. Probably not the ideal choice for someone seeking total resonance with a very thin shelled drum; but subtle and dynamic with my stainless set or maples with reinforcement rings.

            Remo, you have failed me.

Comments about Remo Black X Batter Drumhead:

Let me start out by saying that I love Remo's coated emperors. I bought this head fairly interested about it, because I needed it to replace a stock snare head. This head is terrible. It is the only head I have owned that is worse than the stock head. It has a really high ring that I can't get out. I have tried ring stops, moongels, multiple ring stops. So far the only thing that worked, was throwing a t-shirt on it, and then it had to be miked to a ridiculous level to be heard. It is possible that I recieved a dud, but hands down this is the worst head I have owned.
