OVERVIEW

Has the look, feel, and sound of the original South Indian drum.

The Remo Kanjira Drum is the contemporary version of the traditional India Kanjira, which was made using the skin of the now endangered monitor lizard. Remo's Skyndeep graphic lizard drumhead is an ecological tribute to the beauty of the monitor lizard. Remo's Kanjira is constructed with a tunable, synthetic, Skyndeep graphic drumhead that is attached onto the Acousticon drum shell with a 30 radius bearing edge. The Kanjira is finished with a dark stain Veneer giving it an elegant and traditional antique look.

With Remo modern technologies, using these proprietary materials enables a player to bend, and modulate the pitch exactly like the original, without being affected by climate changes.

You can easily tune Remo's Kanjira with a 5/64" hex key by inserting it into the recessed key hole and tuning key in small increments, achieving the desired low pitch. The 2-3/8"wide x 7" diameter Kanjira fits comfortably in the player's hand and features a 1" flat jingle set that produces a dry tone with short decay.

The Kanjira is part of the rich and complex Indian classical drumming legacy. The South Indian frame drum is an instrument used in the classical Carnatic music. The original kanjira was made from the jackfruit tree using the now endangered lizard species Bengal Monitor or, Varanus Bengalensis of India.

This drum was naturally pre-tuned very high and in order to get a good bass sound the performer sprinkled water on the inside of the drum which loosened the tension. This tedious process would be repeated many times during a performance. The tone of the drum is also affected by the climate and required performers to carry a few kankira drums assuring at least one drum was perfectly tuned.

Remo has developed a modern Kanjira using their proprietary Acousticon drum shells made from 100% recycled wood fibers. The Remo Kanjira features a replaceable drumhead and is easily tuned with a drum key. With Remo's drumhead technologies you can be sure to see future creations for the Kanjira drum.

Comments about Remo Kanjira Drum:

Short and sweet, this thing looks and sounds great. The synthetic head holds its tuning fantastically and just feels really neat.
The issues are with construction, specifically seams within the shell are not even or sealed properly and the woodwork is lacking. The tuning mechanism is also a pain because the allan key provided is very thin and the tuning lugs are located deep in the shell. This makes it a bit tough to tune. Luckily you don't have to tune it very much after your first time because tuning holds almost perfectly.
I was expecting better quality for its price. Still a neat drum non-the-less

Kanjira!

Comments about Remo Kanjira Drum:

First off, why I docked the points: it doesn't come with a bag. Remo's got good kanjira for half the price that do come with one. And... it's fairly pricey despite the good workmanship. If you are looking you know what it can do. (If not, look up Ganesh Kumar or Selvaganesh on Youtube). This drum is great sounding and very responsive. The wood stain looks far better in person.I've found uses for it in just about every song. It tunes with its wrench (a very small allen key) so you can try different sounds very easily.Highly recommended.

      Comments about Remo Kanjira Drum:

I have 30+ years of experience playing hand drums, but I'm a total hack on kanjira. I studied a bit in college while working on my degree in ethnomusicology back in the 80s, and at that time I acquired a "real" kanjira with a monitor lizard skin head. These lizards are now on the endangered species list, so there's no way I would buy a natural skin kanjira anymore. Sadly, the head on my old instrument has begun to pull away from the shell and is becoming brittle, so now it's just an art object on my bookshelf. Thank goodness Remo figured out how to replicate that skin head with synthetic materials. This sounds to me almost exactly like the real deal. And not only are you protecting a very nice critter, you're also spared the hassle of sprinkling water on the head all the time while you're playing to keep the pitch correct. You just tune this up with the included wrench, and off you go. Pitch bending will pull it slightly out of tune after several hours of playing, but it's a piece of cake to tune it back up again. Thank you Remo... now I can start practicing again and maybe someday rise above hack level!
