Overall, It's a fantastic drum I'd buy again without hesitation. I feel it would be a welcome addition to any drum kit, home studio or new age love in .er I mean.. drum circle. Just be prepared to listen to the sounds of your cannibals drumming day and night as it is very addictive and seldom sits for long.
The tuners are almost completely carefree when tuning as apposed to the horror stories I've been hearing about rope tuned djembes and the synthetic head is a must when trying to buy for your vegan wife. She originally wanted bongo's but when I showed her some video of a djembe she was isntantly sold. You hit it in the middle for low notes and the edge for high ones. The lows are as low and earth shaking as the neighor kid's car stereo and the highs can be slap or ping depending on how you strike. The rubber bottom is a nice touch and serves to protect the base which is almost always on the floor due to the size of the 14 inch model.
As others have mentioned, The sythetic head did have a bit of a ring (think good hard basketball on a paved court) but a small square of duct tape(you have to use camo) inside near the edge on the head stops the ring nicely...(shhh don't tell my wife, she hasn't noticed the difference yet). The body is very strong and I suspect it would survive someone sitting on it though I wouldnt try it myself as it would be an expensive sxperiement! I got the earth tone one and the finish is textured, is quite tough, does not flake off when handled and gives the body a nice no slip grip when sitting with your legs crossed around it.
There aren't many vegan options out there...she didn't want animal skin heads..and it is fairly expensive compared to rope tuned animal skinned units offered but I tihnk the tuning, toughness and strking good looks more than make up the difference. You pay dearly for the synthetic heads but the quality is worth it in my opinion and they may actually live longer due to skins being effected by time, the weather, and maybe even a hungry rogue mouse that moves in for the winter. The head has not absorbed any hand oils in the couple months we've been passing it around and looks like the day it arrived...in my house, that's amazing.I can't say "for the money" since I don't have any other 14 inch djembes to compare it too . I think it's a good deal because she liked it.

I dislike the cost because it prevents me from buying a whole bunch of these great drums. I rely on Musicians Friend to have some great deals. Compared to rope tuned drums, the smooth shell of these drums tend to slip between your legs. I've been trying to figure out how to prevent that with parachute cord wrapped around the drum otherwise I can just buy a djembe strap. The designs are limited in availability. I only had one on backorder kinda tells you that these drums are popular Their sound is unique. May have a slight ring for some. They definitely hold their own in the drum circle. They are rugged after dropping mine a few times due to the mech tuners attached to a djembe strap that had a "U" shaped drum hook it kept slipping out of. Nothing busted and drum didn't go out of tune. I easily fixed that with a zip tie. It is best to buy a strap that tis in or has an enclosed hook. I also fell off my stool( a three legged portable stool which folded in a few times) and the drum hit the ground and survived without problems. It is light compared to a "traditional" rope tuned djembe. It doesn't feel like carrying a log around. I brought out my roped tuned drum once and returned the following week to the drum circle with my Remo.
I have bought a 16 inch djembe and the 12 inch. The 12 inch Remo djembe has been the workhorse. They need little to no tuning out of the box. As a beginner it is fool proof for me. The designs are totally cool. In comparison to a rope tuned djembe it does have a slight ringy sound but that also varies from drum to drum. The bass sounds are deep and the slaps are crisp. Nice weight compared to my roped tuned djembes that are carved out of a tree. They have a carry handle. The drum head can be replaced but have not had a need to do so. I have had my drums for 3 years and haven't had a need to be tuned. I also live in a cold environment and the drums have had no problems with the weather.
Even though I rate this as an 8 I have no other mechanically tuned djembes to compare against the Remo. I feel that the quality is superb enough to do this review and to go back and order more of these drums for my friends and family.
Of course I would love it to be inexpensive.then I would collect the other designs. Too bad I'm not pro enough to get an endorsement. For the beginner it is monkey proof. It has great sound. I see the veterans and beginners like myself use this djembe in the local drum circle. I would most likely buy more of these for my friends to create my own drum circle.

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

What to say about this drum? I've had it for seven years and always find a new way to use it. Currently using it with a folk duo and a 5-piece acoustic act. I don't know the best way to form a review, so he's a list of tips and praises...

Big sound, keep it tuned regularily. sometimes a piece of tape or moon gel on the underside of the head does wonders in small venues.

Play it with nylon brushes sometimes! Sounds beautiful, great for folk or bluegrass.

This is way better for accompaniment than a cajon. If you're deciding between the two, get this.

Yes, I know it's not made of wood, but you can take it on an airplane and play it outside without fear!

Buy a good support system to mount it on your body. It's not light.

If you don't like the finish, it's most likely a wrap. Rip it off, sand it, and paint it to make your drum one of a kind.

Overall, this is one of the pieces of gear I've used more than any. Yes, hand-made wood has a better tone, buy don't hesitate to buy it if you're in the market for a durable, all-purpose djembe.

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

This drum is stronger and more durable than a traditional djembe. The drum is waterproof and environmentally friendly and has a wide range of beautiful tones. The sound is full and resonates beautifully, there are so many intricate sounds you can make.

The head is easy and cheap to replace ( the synthetic skin will last a good beating and time) and the tuning is so much more practical and easy with this drum, string djembes can be frustrating to tune. The texture has a grip so it can be held easily between legs, and it is aesthetically appealing.

This sounds and looks different than a traditional djembe, it is much more uniform so you know it will sound good every drum. Traditional djemes vary in sounds and sizes that are never the same, which makes them all unique but you never know what your getting unless you play it. This drum is great for everything, practical, durable yet sound and looks beautiful. Also lighter than a traditional djembe.

All around a must have for any hand percussionist, whether new to this and looking for a starter or a pro I believe this is a great buy.

I got a 14 in earth which has the range I want and is not overly big, I'm 5"5 f with small hands and its comfortable for me. I also think a bigger drum is better and more fun to play. I do accompaniment with guster, Mumford and sons , dispatch, covers and sounds great

I chose the 16" reluctantly as I was concerned that it would be too cumbersome to play and transport but in the end went for it cuz I wanted strong lows in unplugged settings. As it turned out it is not cumbersome at all especially with the Remo lightweight stand I ordered with it. The lows and the highs will definately put a smile on the face of the toughest critic! I am very impressed with this Djembe!

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

I'm a drummer that grabbed a djembe for times when we're just hanging out working on new ideas without the electric guitars. I'm not an expert at world percussion, so my review may not be for those of you looking for the perfect instrument.

I used a 15% off coupon to get it cheaper and I think it's a pretty good value for my use-case.

I had a lot of trouble deciding between the 12" and 14" djembe (I found a video describing the 12"h-24"t size as perfect for a 5'10" guy but I'm a little taller). I wanted a super deep bass note and enough playing surface to hit with my meat sticks. Ordering online makes these things hard. I got the djembe and it definitely fits perfect but I still went to a local guitar center and tried the 14" model. I'm super glad I went with the 12. The 14 is way harder to comfortably hold between my legs, though the 1" height difference didn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

Anyway, other than the fit, let's talk about the sound... I'm stunned. I think the bass note is awesome and the 14" was unnecessary. I even mic'ed it up with a kick mic to be excessive about it.

I've only played it a few hours, but the most important things to me were the sound (great) and comfort of fit (again, great).

Bought this for my son, who loves playing percussion instruments. It was recommended by his teacher and has proved to be a great buy. The sound has a fantastic range and we as a family are enjoying it as well.

Would have been nice to get a complimentary Djembe bag with it!

Nice drum, great tones, well made. I think this size is best value for the money.

I carry this around with me and sit in with lots of acts, from solo acoustic (no mic'ing) to jazz, R&B, soul groups (mic'd. I get alot of compliments on this Djembe...OK, I also get a few comments that it is not a rope tuned Djembe, BUT...when they hear it, they change their minds. It sounds great and easy to tune. Lots of fun to play.

Just got mine in today. I know its not a real goatskin or real wood, but the drum sounds awesome! I got the 16" black earth and its sleak! I would definately buy another one. Shipping was fast and drum is in good condition as well as playable right out of the box. Had it shipped to my job and am playing it in my office :P everyone is jealous
