I decided a while back to go with a more "old school" approach to my gigging kit. So I added maple hoops and FiberSkyn heads to all my drums except the kick. The FiberSkyns sounded OK but didn't last long, so I tried the Renaissance Emperor Heads. I LOVE these heads! They have a very nice, warm tone, and hold up pretty well. Also, these are two ply, and it seems like the inner ply always tears first, and you can see it. So you know that head is gonna go soon. Nice to have a warning. I gig constantly, 3 to 5 times a week, every week, and have used these heads effectively for Rock, Country, Reggae, Jazz, and they always sound great.

Recently purchased the 12" Renaissance Emperor head for my 12x8 Mapex Black Panther Snare, the Evans 12" genera doesn't even come close to the beautiful sound I have now produced with the Emperor. No need for tape to dampen and tuning was a breeze, no unwanted overtones or ringing, with perfect feel and bounce. My DW toms will get the same renovations. I highly recommend these especially if you play any style of Blues!!!

I have Remo Renaissance Emporors on my toms and bass. top & bottom. I have a Renaissance ambassador & Renaissance ambassador snare side on my snare. My drums have 6 ply maple shells & wood hoops. The resultant tone is the fat, mellow old time jazz/swing sound I was looking for. I like Emporors on toms & bass because they start to work at looser tunings. Ambassadors were too high & ringy. I like a tighter snare and an Emperor on the top put up too much of a fight for the wood hoops. The coating on the renaissance snare side dries out the drum & keeps the ambassabor from being too ringy.

I'm from the old school when mylar was first introduced. I've always had mellower sounding drums(mahogany shells) and these heads are the perfect compliment, not to mention that I have not put one dent in these since installing them ten months ago.

This head has a good sound, but it is VERY ringy unless you tighten it to where it feels like the screw is gonna snap. If you like a head that rings like crazy, than buy this one. I have it on my Ludwig snare, but I like to use brushes a lot, so this head just isn't right for me because it's not a coated head (so you cant hear the brushes). If you want a head that is not extremely thick like this one and that is coated so you can use brushes, I recommend the Remo Ambassador Medium Snare head over this one.
