These reviewers who say that this or that head is reminiscent of a particular pro drummer's sound is just killing me. Drum heads don't "make" a drummer's recorded sound..the recording engineer does, along with a thousand other factors like the room, the mic, the EQ, the resonant head, the tuning, the drum shell, the stick, the way they're played, etc. etc.So, you people who insist on believing that this head will make your drums sound "like Bonham" or or anyone else are just exposing your ignorance. These heads are good. I use them because I like the way they sound on my shells, in my studio, and on stage, and that's it. They don't remind me of 1960, 1970, or 1980. They don't remind me of John Bonham or anyone else. They tune up well, they're durable, and on thin maple shells, they're especially sweet. Nice overtones and just the right amount of sustain for my tastes (with a coated Ambassador on the resonant side).

I have tried three of the 14 inch versions on my beloved Gretsch American series Maple custom snare and they were all dead and lifeless sounding. Zero ring or resonance, boxy, papery and not at all like a regular Ambassador head which is outstanding on any drum. I give it a 1 overall only because for some reason a 12 inch version of this particular run of heads sounds quite good and ringy on my Rogers Holiday rack tom where almost all other heads tend to sound closed in in comparison. Three for three on the snare drum were simply garbage however.

Comments about Remo Vintage Ambassador Coated Batter Drumhead:

This head SMOKES the Coated Ambassador on snare. We all know that's a "go-to" for many pros and intermediates alike. This head should be the new standard. I've tried both back to back and the Vintage A has more response, tone, and depth than the regular Coated Ambassador. The CA sounds like cheap paper, while the Vintage A sounds rich and full.

At first try I did not like this head because I was used to specialty heads like power dots and dry vents (evans). But after experimenting and throwing a moon gel on, I found that I could tweak this head to my liking, and I got the perfect sound.

I've heard these sound monstrous on toms too, but I can't comment there. This head is a beast on snare if you're not afraid to use moon gels and have a minute's worth of patience.

Great sound. Has a kind of papery attack which I really like.

      The Sound Remains The Same...

      By Adam13

      from St. Louis

Comments about Remo Vintage Ambassador Coated Batter Drumhead:

Sicken Tired is right, there are indeed many factors that go into the recorded sound of drums. But I think she maybe undervalues the selection of batter head and it?s impact on a drum?s sound either recorded or live.Given the same recording conditions of shell, mic, room, engineer etc., the recorded playback of a Vintage A will in fact sound different than say a Pinstripe or different head. To go back to the Bonham example, what recording has more variables than ?When The Levee Breaks?? The old house, stone floor, stair case, a pair of stereo mics on the second landing and Jimmy Page. I?m sure Bonham?s drumheads played a pretty dramatic role in the recorded results. It would have sounded different with different heads Recording aside, the natural, ?naked? sound of the Vintage A unapologetically reminds me of guys like Bonham, Mitch and Ringo? Some heads simply don?t have that sound. If you want to hear a Les Paul don?t plug in a Strat. And don?t send a Pinstripe to do a Vintage A?s job.

      Great Drumhead

      By drummerdude9215

Comments about Remo Vintage Ambassador Coated Batter Drumhead:

I just reheaded the toms (12" rack and 14" floor) of my vintage '67 Ludwig Club Date kit with the Remo Vintage A's.I use Fiberskyn's on my toms and decided to give the Vintage A's a try. Improvement? No.. Just a different vibe. Less articulation than the Fiberskyn 2, but much more warmth and roundness. Great resonance also. I am going back and forth with using a moon gel or other method of muffling. Different songs call for different methods. Sounds great with and without any type of muffling treatment though.

      Wonderful Head!

      By Monday317

Comments about Remo Vintage Ambassador Coated Batter Drumhead:

I agree completely with JazzDrummer87, Adam13 and Big Nick--especially for toms. I have used this head on problem snares and gotten wonderful results. These are Asian-made 70s & 80s-vintage wooden snares I have restored that tended to be thin and ringy; old Luann can be that way. The Vintage A's controlled the ring and frequency response of the shells to give them a fatter tone and made them sound really nice. And as Big Nick mentioned, they make a great tom batter if you want a two-ply head and an Emperor or G2 seems too thick. I'm sorry Slammintone has seen so much trouble, but given his description of his issues, I question his tuning technique, or his snare may be out of round. These heads are great, and you can buy them with confidence! I would recommend a Vintage A as a good starting point for anyone with snare or tom batter problems.

      Sounds Like A Zeppelin Record

      By Adam13

      from St. Louis

Comments about Remo Vintage Ambassador Coated Batter Drumhead:

If you're looking for a classic rock sound reminiscent of the late 60's and 70's try these out. I bought them only because my local shop was out of Coated Ambassadors, but they were even closer to that Bonham sound that alot of us crave. I would also compare them to the recordings that Eric Kretz made with Stone Temple Pilots. I use these wide open, no dampening, on Ludwig's Birch drums with triple flanged hoops. They have great projection in practice situations where they cut through the guitars and bass, but they sound even better blasting through the PA. Put these around your set and rip into 'Moby Dick' and you'll be a fan for life.

      Awesome tom head

      By Big Nick

      from Reno NV

Comments about Remo Vintage Ambassador Coated Batter Drumhead:

A lot of dealers will try to sell this as a snare head. Bad idea. I swear by Evans G1's for batter snares, I tried a vintage A that my dealer reccomended on a 68' acrolite and it sounded horrible like I thought. But then, I put vintage A's on my birch TAMA kit and on my Maple DW and this is it. Making a coated two ply, with one of the films less than half the thickness of the other is a perfect match. ON TOMS, you will get a lot of warmth and sustain, and great attack. I think you will not be dissapointed. Tune this head a little lower than you would a two ply batter head, and the reso head about two notes higher than the vintage A batter. Cant go wrong.
