KD-85 only held up for three months with moderate playing of Christian contemporary and rock music. At that point the drum began false triggering, and decaying of signal output, followed by random volume spikes. I've changed factory transducers and cones and still own a $375 anchor with a foot pedal. I'm considering returning to my old faithful acoustic Yamahas!

I'm sending mine back. I decided to upgrade from the KD8 to the mesh head KD85, hoping for better "feel" and quieter play. Though this is a very well constructed pad, the improvements in feel and noise were only marginal compared to the KD8 despite all its faults (propensity for double hits, noise etc). At 3 times the price, the KD85 is not 3 times as good as the KD8. It also seemed to be less stable (lots of movement when played) though I might have been able to fine tune that if I'd kept it.

Initially, after tightening up the mesh head, the beater was double hitting about 20% of the time. To remedy this, I loosed up the mesh head quite a bit, although according to the instruction manual, it might be particularly dangerous for the sensor. After doing this, it seems to trigger perfectly and the double hits are gone and still has fairly good rebound. It is sturdy and built well, as with all other Roland drums. The price tag is definitely too steep.

The response of this pad is good but it does not have the feel of a real kick drum. You do not get that nice soft feel when you lay into it, so it is necessary to play it softer than a real kick--otherwise, your leg will start to hurt from the shock of the impact.

I recieved the KD-85 for a birthday gift from my girlfriend to go with my RM-2 practice pad. It went together smooth and plugs right into the RM-2 interface. It does move around a bit when being played, but thats not the end of the world. I've only owned it 4 days and so far so good. I live in a small apartment ad makes base drum practice possible.
