I have had the unit for a short period but so far I really like it. I have been using my keyboard to program drum parts - what a hassle. There is nothing like the bounce of real sticks on a pad. The on board sounds and effects are pretty good sounding and quality. It is very touch sensitive and you can adjust the sensitivity base on your touch. It was easy to connect to my studio using Cakewalk and a PC with a simple MIDI connection. Creating the instrument definition was not a problem and now I have the names of the patches in Cakewalk to make it easier to select the sounds I want. The only downside is that a few times when I hit two notes and one was not totally centered one didn't sound. Also I wish that you could have 100 user presets and 100 factory available. As far as I can see you over write the factory and can't recall it unless you restore the entire factory bank. I love the thought of being able to add a kick; high hat and other pads. The SPD-20 is a real asset in my studio.

This machine produces awesome sounds and effects. The manual is extremely poor, making this unit very complicated to understand. Would be nice to have all the presets available in a lefty version. Hardware is good quality, but the manual is one of the worst I have ever had too use. I gave the unit an overall 5 as average because of the lack of sufficient information in the manual and the unnecessary time I spent figuring it out on my own.

Good but seriosly out-dated.

By Mista drumma

I purchased this with a kd-8 bass pad- and fd-8 hihat and an additional pd-8 dual zone pad(for the snare). I expected that this setup would allow me to be very compact but with quality sounds.however i realized that the stock sound were absolute crap.there were absolutely no realistic acoustic sounds.almost every patch was dedicated some heavy metal kit,hip-hop,r&b and ethnic sounds. All the regular drum sounds are either to exaggerated or to disco sounding.I am contemplating getting yamaha dtxpress or dtxtreme module since yamaha concentrates mostly on acoustic sounds and not synth effects.enough with software though.I think the usability of the pad system and menu were quite good. however assigning pads can very difficult because of the annoying crosstalk issues it suffers with.Good value but if you can ,try to get the roland td-3 , hd-1 or an yamaha dtxpress.

Roland SPD-20

By dwdrumman-C6Fk_

This is hands down the best sounding and most flexible option for adding electronic percussion to your setup. The sounds are the same ones found on the other high end Roland brains. I use it mostly for the vintage analog sounds (TR909, 808, CR78, etc.) and they as sound close to the real thing as it gets. It is also very easy to create unique sounds from ordinary instruments by tweaking the pitch, adding effects, and layering sounds together. I use it mainly with my acoustic drums and external pads, but it is also great for adding more sounds to a drum machine or sequencer via MIDI.

Good sounds - easy to configure

This unit has good sounds. The pads aren't great, but better than anything else like it. If you are thinking of using this in place of an acoustic kit - you'll need external pads for bass drum, snare and hi-hat - and a hi-hat controller. I am using a Drum Kat Hi-Hat controller that works great with this unit. I have a Yamaha bass drum pad (not as good as Roland's KD-85 or KD-120). I use a PD-105 as a snare drum and it is awesome with this unit - very expressive and very responsive. It's never going to replace a real acoustic kit, but it's nice for practice, very small rooms, etc.I had a Yamaha DD-55 for practice sessions: It is GARBAGE - don't buy it - it's worse than a toy! The Roland SPD-20 has been great for practice sessions. (I can't bring my kit to practice - not enough room and too loud.)

By ReLaYeR

I bought an SPD-20, 3 1/2 yrs. ago. I had an SPD- 11 before that. Having said that, this is the greatest of all !!! I can do SO many things with this instrument, it is really unbelievable. I Also have an ALESIS DM-PRO (which is also GREAT !)I have used both for live gigs, recording/ studio etc.. I won't be giving this thing up anytime !!! ! Highly recommended gear. Easy to play, dependable, and Oh the great sounds YOU will produce ! ReLaYeR :-)

a powerhouse

By superboy825

This is a great unit...as usual no one compares to Roland when it comes to electronic percussion. Works great as the master brain to an expandable electronic kit, Or as "all in one" kit for the gigging drummer who does not want to haul a lot of gear around but still have access to any sound needed on stage. Also a great pad to throw on the side of an acoustic kit as a rich audio component. Leave your cowbells, tamborourines, space whistles etc. at home! My only complaints would be only four pad inputs (3 if you utilize a pedal), and unclear midi instructions. This unit works very well with an old gum pad all the way up to roland pd 120's. Anyone out there got resources for utilization of th is pad with cakewalk and or Acid?

I have owned this unit and played it for over 6+ years in all aspects of live concert gigs, extensive studio work and now even at church. Before that, I owned the SPD-11 and the Octapad from waayyy back.I play the hand percussion/latin patches on the SPD-20 at church and the worship team loves it!! I have also added pedals and external pads and used this kit live at gigs like a small cocktail drumkit-- only you don't have to lug in HALF as much gear!!I highly recommend this unit for pros and beginners alike.Easy learning curve with the manual and the sounds are great!!ENDLESS possiblilites in the recording studio as well!! AAAAA++++

WOW!!!

By ZeppelinDrummer512

from Aledo, TX

I just got the SPD-20, and I can't be happier. It has more sounds that any other single electronic drum module, and more than most full electronic kits. It is very sensitive and responsive. If you buy this product, which you should, you really need to buy the HPD stand. It is WELL worth it. Great product. Go with Roland, and you can't go wrong.

Great Machine

I love everything about this product except for the manual. It is the most confusing manual I've ever come across. Other than that, go for it, it's a great addition to MY acoustic setup.

Pretty user friendly and I like the ability to add external pads. My first forray into electronic percussion; however, I probably should have gone with a full kit to better meet my needs.
