OVERVIEW

Portable, powerful, percussion pad perfect for your productions and performances!

The Roland Octapad SPD-30 blends the world's most essential sounds with the latest percussion triggering technology. Roland wraps the Octapad in a road-tough package that's ready for the most demanding performers.

Roland's original Octapad profoundly changed the landscape of electronic percussion. The size of a briefcase, the Octapad offered drummers and percussionists the equivalent of an entire electronic rig in one self-contained unit—a new level of convenience and expression. Now, decades later, another exciting chapter in Octapad history begins.

Sound Bank
Unlike the original Octapad PAD-8, which was strictly a MIDI controller, the Roland Octapad SPD-30 is a controller that's packed with its own internal bank of sounds. Fifty kits are built into the SPD-30—essential sounds that span a musical universe of styles. You can customize the sounds with the onboard controls for tuning, muffling, attack, pitch sweep, and more. Having a Roland Octopad is like having a truckload of customizable drum and percussion instruments in one portable package.

Multi-Effects
Based on Roland's world-leading effects technology, the SPD-30's multi-effects engine will take your performances to another level. The Octopad has 30 types of internal multi-effects onboard, plus EQ, limiter, and seven ambiance types.

Phrase Loop Function
The onboard Phrase Loop function lets you instantly create layered loops and phrases. You can record and store 50 phrases internally, with each containing up to three layers. You can also save your phrase data on your USB Memory.

Advanced Triggering Technology
The SPD-30 Octopad benefits from Roland's most advanced V-Drum triggering technology. Each pad is a separate, isolated unit, providing the ultimate in sensitivity with complete crosstalk rejection. In addition, you can connect four dual-trigger inputs plus a hi-hat controller (compatible with Roland FD-8, VH-11) to create a mini drum set with external pads (Roland KD/PD/PDX/CY series), as well as to accept triggers from acoustic drums through Roland's RT series.

FEATURES
  • 8 trigger pads with hundreds of sounds
  • 50 drum kits
  • Packed with new percussion sounds from around the world, plus 30 types of multi-effects
  • The latest pad-sensing technology developed for V-Drums provides even and accurate pad triggering with excellent isolation between pads
  • Four dual-trigger inputs plus hi-hat controller for adding pads to create a mini kit, or for accepting triggers from acoustic drums
  • Ambience with equalizer and limiter
  • Phrase Loop function inspires your creativity; record your playing in real time and overdub up to three layers
  • USB connectivity for MIDI and memory storage
  • Large, backlit LCD and pad indicator lights for easy operation onstage or in any environment
  • Rugged, roadworthy design

The Octapad SPD-30 is the most versatile Octapad yet! Order today!

Competent but unfinished.

By Calle af ekenstam

Comments about Roland SPD-30 Octapad:

Great for playing percussion but the phrase looper is not good enough. A hasty work developing. If you pretend to get as much out of it as possible to maximize value, be prepared to spend a lot of time with it learning all features. Also, you need to solve problems with an open mindset and make "mental detours" in the creational process to intuitively at a blink realize what you want to do live.
Pros: Great sounds and possibilities of variation between them. Good pad feel and playability. And other great ways of saving sounds and handling of menus.

Cons: Doesn't forward MIDI clock.
No separate pad for stopping and starting loops ONLY.
Hard to use in a live setting syncing to a external beat/music. No way to tap tempo in pre-listening mode, also because Metronome doesn't start when immeadately when pressing start/standby button.
It's easy to become impressed by Michael Shacks demos but the Phrase loop function seems more or less meant to be played in a solo context. Maybe easier if syncing to a midi clock. But hard in an overall acoustic environment.
Good as expected.
Almost there, unfinished product regarding the Phrase loop. Buy a Loop pedal instead. Prepare for steep learning curve.

great fun.

Comments about Roland SPD-30 Octapad:

i didn't give it full marks because the spd-sx has some features that i think the spd-30 should have as well. this machine would be way cool if it did!
i have read in reviews and forums that some say roland v drums and this pad sound like a toy. it is my opinion these people must be running their sound through a toy amp. i personally run mine through a peavey kb-5 and the sounds and tone are spot on. it still blows me away when i play. the high end electric drum kits require doing your home work and investing in good sound equipment to take advantage of all the hard work that went into the product. roland holds many patents that others must pay to use just to keep up. i have several roland models and just love them.
as far as my review of this pad. learn to adjust the sensitivity to take advantage of multi triggering the pads. i had to learn some techniques to get the pads to come alive. takes a little practice but thats the fun part.
this newer model octapad is built well. my five year old misses the pads and smacks the plastic from time to time and it doesn't phase it.
a bit pricey but what isn't these days?

I expected a bit more...

Comments about Roland SPD-30 Octapad:

After playing the SPD-20 since 1999, I have grown to love the compactness of Roland Multipads. The SPD 20 and SPD S made a formidable foe for the Roland modules of the past, until the TD series arrived. I was hoping the SPD 30 would rival the TD series, but that was not the Roland business plan. Make no mistake,it is built very well and has LOTS of way cool world percussion samples, but that's the end of the story. If you want a good percussion tool with unique and high quality sounds, you could not do any better, but if you are thinking about a matching hot rod drum kit, not much here. On this unit, Roland makes the outboard pads unable stack two sounds,(rim & head don't count) it's drama to turn off sound bank A while programming sound bank B, the acoustic drum selections are skimpy and many just plain bad sounding. So this is definitely a percussionist machine or an add on to another Roland (they planned it that way) module. I guess I was hoping for an improved sound bank with more samples (the Yamaha has over 1000) of high quality drums and cymbals along with the world percussion instruments. I plan to keep the SPD 30 because of those unique instruments, but will simply have to buy the Yamaha to finish the job. With the Yamaha having sampling capabilities, I might be able to lose the SPD S and it's insensitive pad response...but that is another story.

Roland octapad spd-30

By JE

Comments about Roland SPD-30 Octapad:

Yes, this is the best Octapad, latest and greatest, I'll give you that, but it is still lacking key elements that could have made it great. With 2 usb connections and audio in, you would expect this to have some sort of audio import feature like the SPD-S, but it does not. The pad lights only shine when a phrase loop is active. The monochrome LCD display is a bit tricky to navigate and the phrase loop light just keeps flashing and driving me crazy. There are no user banks or storage locations to set up kits inside the unit, but thankfully there is a USB memory connection. Output is weak, but headphones are ok. Pads are soft able to be controlled individually with absolutely no cross talk, but are more sensitive in center, less at the edge. The literature lies. Very limited number of samples and pitched instruments have way too few resamples. Phrase looping is nice but nothing new here. You can only combine 3 tracks in a loop, but SPD-S can combine 9. Hows that for progress. Solid instrument and easy to play, good addition to V-drum set or SPD-S.
