Comments about Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad:
I've owned the SPD-S since it came out and it was an awesome sampler! It worked great for me live and in the studio. I just picked up the new SPD-SX about a month ago and right off the bat it was easy for me to dive in and navigate around. I exported all my wave files from the SPD-S and imported them into the new SPD-SX with no problem. I haven't used it live yet however I can see how the new display and illuminated buttons will help out when light settings are low. Pad check is awesome! Quick menus are cool. I can also now setup a click and send it out via a selection of different outs which will work great live. I can send the click signal out to the band for their ears only via a sub out! Over all I'm impressed and I can see I'm gonna have lots of fun with it. Oh! And the preloaded sounds that come with it are great!
A little on the pricey side of things... but well worth the buy.
Comments about Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad:
Overall, a good unit and a much needed upgrade to the SPD-S
Much more roadworthy, though the biggest issue I have with it is the limited stock sounds; it is much more 'loop focussed' than 'drum sound focussed', I miss the range of sounds offered by the SPD-S. Sounds are very easy to import and decent samples are easy to come by, so it's not a huge issue (just buy battery or something and take the sounds from there)
Can play really long Wav files, useful for triggering backing tracks
(Yamaha DTX-12 had a 4MB file limit!! no such problem here)
I've owned pretty much everything in this catagory (Roland SPD-S, Yamaha DTX-12, now this) and I feel like the SPD-SX is the clear winner.
The SPD-SX has a lot of great features, the most useful for me being the Wave Manager Software, which allows you to assign kits and sounds using the computer. It only lets you assign waves and the kit name however; kit settings like tempo, trigger setups etc must still be configured using the menus. Still saves a boatload of time over the old menu based systems.
The sub-outs are a great feature, many many uses for them like separating high and low sounds so they can be mixed by the sound guy independantly.
More expandability than the SDP-S though sadly not more hi-hat control.
Missing the record pattern feature: can record yourself playing the SPD-SX, but saves as a wave, patterns were useful as they could easily tempo sync or change sounds and took up much less memory.
The lights on the pad are a great help, letting you know which pads are producing sound.
The menu is intuitive and simple, I do wish they had a rotary encoder or some other way of changing a parameter like tempo quickly.
Sound library is limited, importing your own sounds is easy, however the stock sounds are a little narrow in scope. The sounds on there are great and there are classic things like 808's, 909's, bass drops etc so it would suffice for most people I'd say.
Very high quality; I've broken an SPD-S on the road before. I've used a SPD-S, Yamaha DTX-12 and now this; the SPD-SX is the most solid feeling, durable pad out of all of them.
Great roadworthy design, much stronger and not at all 'toy-like' like the SPD-S
Sound quality is great too; I originally thought the system was unusually quiet but there is just an adjustable system gain that you need to turn up if you want to be loud.
Overall, I feel like this is a very good value unit for the money. Traditionally Roland's offereings have been more expensive than camparative brands like Yamaha, however this pad was very reasonably priced.
I wish both companies would get in the habit of including a mounting plate as part of the setup, but i don't see that happening anytime soon.
