    Expensive, but excellent product

    Features:

Virtually unlimited features - just take a gander through the manual. I would list them all, but I need to sleep at some point.

    Quality:

I don't like the cage, but I own the original TD20 - I haven't played on the new one. In 3 years I haven't replaced a single piece of equipment. All the drums and cymbals are working just fine along with the module. I did replace the snare mesh though when a small tear slowly developed.

    Value:

Pricey, but you have to consider all the features you're getting. What's the cost of a kit with 50+ pieces (different drum woods and materials, every cymbal size and shape imaginable, woodblocks, cowbells, and every other accessory for the kit), all the recording equipment (mics, stands, cords, mixer, multitrack recorder, etc...), and all the post processing (compressor, EQ, effects, etc...)? This has to be the most versatile drum kit ever. Period.

And your neighbors won't hate you for playing at 3am next door. They won't even know you're playing.

    Overall:

I've been playing drums for over 10 years, and I've owned the original TD20 for 3 years. It certainly has a different feel than a regular kit, but once you've played it consistantly for a month or so you'll never look back. You can't argue with the number of features the kit offers. I'm convinced anyone who complains about how the kit sounds simply hasn't adjusted the settings to fit their needs. I was dissappointed in the drum triggers before the expansion and I found myself adjusting them constantly because of inconsistancies in amplitude as well as the threshold between the drum and rim. However, since I installed the expansion in my original TD20 these issues have been resolved. It plays smooth and natural.

I only have a couple pieces of negative feedback: price and cage. Price is self-explanatory - it's unbelievably expensive. However, you have to consider how much you're saving in the process: any hardware you want is already there, no need for mics, no need for a mixer, all the post processing is built in with compression, equalizers, etc - and you can even record directly onto the kit. I don't like the cage design. It looks as if they were trying to make it look smooth and sleek, but the I can't get the cymbals exactly where I want them. They tend to slide around a little too. I did notice in the picture that the cage design has changed slightly though, so maybe these issues have been resolved as well.

If you don't want to be concerned with noise, not limit your playing, be able to hear yourself play along to music with crystal clarity, record limitlessly, enjoy diversity and control, use the same drum sticks for literally years on end, and I could probably go on forever - get this kit. It's been 3 years and not a day goes by that I regret purchasing this kit.

when my youth leader asked me to play drums for a ceremony at my church, i was ecstatic, i walked into the sanctuary and saw this  beast. i instantly recognized it. Roland Td20. woah.   i sat down behind  it and noticed it seemed a little... odd. it was quite large seeing how im used to my 4 piece gretsch.  i turned the roland on and started drumming. i went through most of the settings on the drums and STILL couldnt get them to sound good.  the  highest tom was like hitting a roto-tom, and the lowest tom was like hitting a plastic trashcan.  when i play, i noticed that it felt like playing a pice of cardboard with drumsticks. my sticks were new. the drums buzzed and sortof rang when you would play it, the bassdrum was amazing though.. andthe snare... ugh. dont even get me started. maybe i was just not used to a sound like that from a snare, but it was terrible.  i went back to the yyouth room of my church and played the yamaha DTXplorer, and it blew this set away.  i am NOT impressed with this set for the price.

I have owned this Kit for a little over a year. I have used it live consistently outside of several outdoor shows and have been extremely satisfied with the feel, sound, and expressiveness having played acoustic drums since I was three years old. In terms of live sound,I am totally spoiled with pristine sound in every room I perform. No more dead sounding snare or toms! You need a couple powered  monitor cabs loaded with 15's and 250 to 350 watts RMS comin at you and the stage fill. The ambience is the key to a great live sound with this kit. The master outs have the ambience and I send the masters to my monitors. Use your 8 direct outs to the snake or board and make sure you go into the output page and route the ambience out of 7 and 8 which are the cymbal channels thus acting as overheads. Otherwise you have no ambience to FOH and your snare will sound small and thin and toms will lose some punch. Once you route the ambience out of 7 and 8, you will shut every critic up with great sound providing it is mixed well. In terms of recording, same deal, ambience is key to a great recording. Incredible ambience and room options to choose from!!  The V editing is top notch. Some kits need to be tweeked some in terms of mic positions, muffling, etc. Especially the cymbals as some will break up a bit otherwise if struck very hard. I am totally amazed with the sounds and recorded an entire CD with this kit and achieved great sounding drum tracks. Some owners complain about only one user kit. I overwrite custom and tweeked kits over several of the electronic kits offered that I will never use. This gives me 10 to 15 custom kits from scratch or spin offs from the Vpro, Control Room, and Metal Core kits with all sorts of percussion, splash, china's, and effects routed to the rims. I I need some electronic sounds I program to a rim or two. The customizing is totally endless with this module and I even program the edge of my ride for an additional crash cymbal on every customized kit. The cymbals are amazing in terms of expression and the hat is 95% expressive of an acoustic hat. Rim shots, chokes, rims, edges, muffling, heads, beaters, mic positions; it is all there for the taking. You just have to play it live to really see the light. The new rack is heavy duty and solid. The new Kick is totally realistic and doesn't move an inch!! Each tom can be tuned for feel to mimic small to floor tom feel. Amazing!!  I can't say enough about this kit. It is worth every penny and more with thousands of dollars worth of percussion to boot.

Most electronic drum kits are cheap and use low-grade materials with low quality sound. Roland, in general, makes better kits. I own an upgraded TD-9 (added cymbal and kick and pedal) and it is a great kit, but it just doesn't have the necessary sound diversity and overall quality that is required by professional drummers. I use it instead for recording extra percussion tracks to my band's demo recordings before I mix them or edit them. But the Roland TD20SX is more than good enough to be used as a drummer's main kit, and that's without adding any hardware or software. Everything about it is perfect except the price, and if you have the money at any point BUY IT!!!! And if you're upgrading from a less expensive kit, TD20SX has 4 AUX inputs so you can keep some stuff like cymbals from your old kit. Definitely a great kit!

I've had a TD20 kit for 3-4 years and loved it.  I got a chance to get a TD20SX brand new for just under $5,000 so I jumped on it.  It's such an improvement over the TD20.  The bass drum, pads, and rack specifically.  The rack is so much nicer and finally looks/is a REAL chrome rack!  The mounts/clamps are all metal and really set it off.  The clear cables look awesome too.  I kept my black cymbals and sold off the silver as I think they look better.  The bass drum is SO much nicer then the KD120, without question the nicest part of the kit.  The upgraded color scheme on the module looks so much better too.  Do yourself a favor, and BUY ONE!!!
