Comments about Roland TD-4K2-S V-Compact Series Drum Set:

I'll get this out of the way so that maybe some of my fellow acoustic drum fans will keep on reading. This kit is not a replacement for your good acoustic kit. Some of the reviewers seem to love it and have no need for their shells anymore, but I've played on this guy extensively for a week now and it is just not possible to get the dynamics anywhere near what you can get with an acoustic kit.

I, like most others, bought it because I live in a brick house with uninsulated hardwood floors that carry carry carry the sound, even with all my mutes on. That being said, I was always bothered by trying to play along with tracks with an unmuted kit anyways. Either the drums were too loud and I couldn't hear my ipod or the reverse. The aux in port is perfect for plugging in your external source to play along to. Soooo much nicer than trying to deafen yourself playing over an already cranked ipod.

As compared to some of the cheaper kits (Alesis, Simmons, etc) this one was infinitely more realistic. I tried both in store and even though I had to disassemble the kit (I bought it used) and reconfigure it it still plays (in a setup sense) more like an acoustic kit than any other electric. The mesh pad on the snare is definitely nicer than its rubber counterparts. It surprised the bujesus out of me the first time I heard a rim shot out of the thing! I also normally play with one rack tom and one floor tom, so i just plugged the spare tom pad into the add on cymbal pad and now I have a ride cymbal (which has 3 zones: crash, ride, and bell) as well as two crash cymbals.

Wrapping it up, this isn't a replacement for good old fashioned skin drum in sound, playability, or just cool factor, but if you need a SUPER quiet way to practice, it's worth the money. THAT reminds me! I got rid of my spare shell kit and hardware. I used to keep a spare kit at the guitarists place so I could just haul cymbals and a stand or two back and forth, but now I have two full kits. Save up some scratch and go buy one of these guys.

The TD-4K2-S V-Compact Series Drum Set

        By Community User

        from Florida

Comments about Roland TD-4K2-S V-Compact Series Drum Set:

This kit is well made and should last a long time. Pads and cymbals are relatively inexpensive.
I have this set hooked up to my surround sound recording studio. It sounds fantastic. Although it does have a female MIDI out, I am finding limits with this missing port. The lines out (2 1/4" TRS), Headphone out, and Line in work just fine. I hooked up a double pedal to the kick. The spiked stop screws don't do much stopping the kick from sliding across a rug, so I would recomend getting a rubber mat large enough to fit the whole kit and throne on. (4'X5') I don't like the snake input end. I like stuff that's upgradable. One could get a different brain, but would also have to buy new cables for the pads. The Hi Hat pedal takes some getting used to, but it's great. For the missing MIDI in, the module gets an 8, pads and pedal 10.
        Legendary Roland
This is a good entry level set.

        Extremely happy with it!

        By Patricia Mejia

        from Undisclosed

Comments about Roland TD-4K2-S V-Compact Series Drum Set:

Everything I wish for from a drumset, great feel, sound and quality, I've been a drummer for 6 years now, and this is my 4th kit, and the best one I've had, even my best Pearl set kinda got jealous from this one! Easy to use interface and menu system keeps things simple and yet give so many oportunities to make the perfect kit for you, with the sounds you want, onto any of the 25 possible kits you can assemble, just what I need.
I'm very happy with my purchase, and the best thing is that it's portable, weighs around 35 pounds and great for going to practice and to live shows. On a great set of speakers, this baby kicks most acoustic sets hard!
Gotta love the great customizability of each individual pad: percussion, muffling, tuning, ambiance, individual volume and sensibility; gives you a chance to make your dream kit.Snare pad is a great adition to the kit, it gives the feel you expect from any normal snare. Cloth kick pad also feels great, and makes very little sound.Features two output lines, headphone jack and midi out, great for a practice, live session or recording.
The tempo trainer is a great tool for perfecting your timings and endurance, use it everytime before practicing. Doublr trigger cymbals offer more versatilty with the possibility of diffrent tones and sounds. Hihat pedal is good, but I still want more sensibility from the pressing of it.
The lack of preset practice songs should be resolved in future kits though...
Toms feel very nice. Great bounceback and an even better resistance than other pads, they sure would handle a beating. Snare seems like it will last for quite a long time, as with the cymbals. Cymbals sound very natural and feel very comfortable when hit. The stand by it self feel very sturdy and doensn't wiggle when you are playing. The hihat pedal is heavy, and feels very nicely when pressed. A great thing to notice, is that both the hihat pedal and the kick pad both have handturnable screws that will latch to your carped, this making it almost impossible for both parts to move farther away from you.
The sounds are amazing, you could record this set and no one would ever know it's an electric kit.The possibilty of tuning emulates perfectly the tuning on real drums, as well as the muffling.
I know this kit will last for a some years.
Quite costly for many, but makes a perfect choice for the money, there are more expensive kits, but this one could very well be the first tier of high tier electric drumsets.
The feel and the wide variety of sounds and customization make this set quite worthy of it's price,

        No USB !!!!!

Comments about Roland TD-4K2-S V-Compact Series Drum Set:

I would have given this a 10 if it had a USB connector but that was really important to me as I don't really like Roland's sounds because they sound like a Roland drum machine instead of a real drum kit. I planned to use this kit to trigger drum libraries in my computer such as EZ Drummer, NI Abbey Roads drums 60's 70's & 80's and I really didn't want to have to purchase a midi to usb converter. C'mon even Alesis puts USB on their kits.
I've wanted a Roland kit for years and finally after looking at all the others, I decided I would regret it if I didn't get the Roland. Well, I've got it now and love it but I was completly shocked to find it had no USB connector, just a midi out and who uses midi cables anymore?
High quality because its a Roland.
Great value unless you want to trigger external sounds from a computer via USB and not have to purchase a Midi to USB converter.

        The Evolution of edrums

        By dave . aquisap

        from Undisclosed

Comments about Roland TD-4K2-S V-Compact Series Drum Set:

If you're planning to buy a drum set and you need to practice in a quite setting then TD4-K2-S is a very good buy at a cheap price point, you can adjust the overall volume or use a headset for total quite practice. If you buy an acoustic kit, then you need to buy a very good cymbals not just a ZBT or any bronze tech cymbals which will be expensive plus you have to upgrade the skins. The best thing is you can tune the small toms at a high pitch and give the floor a big beefy sound so with the kick drum and each pad's volume can be adjusted to your preference. Portability is another plus point, it can be packed in a small bag no need for a big car to haul the whole set.In a Live situation as long as the sound mix is very good, TD4 will sound just like a very expensive kit as long as you can tune it properly. The only thing don't forget to buy a very good pedal such as Pearl's P900, 3 bags to carry the set (to avoid scratches), a quality headset and a good sounding powered speaker or a 60W PC 2.1 spkr for studio practice. You won't need an all mesh pad set-up as toms are not often used and the sound and feel of rubber pad toms are ok.Another thing it is fully adjustable small kids can use it with ease.
Lots of high end features at a low cost.
Build Quality is fantastic, pads are heavy duty but care is needed specially for snare, be sure not to hit the sensor to avoid damage.Sound Quality is awesome specially if hooked on a very good sounding speaker. TD4 drums has undergone a lot of upgrades and so far this one (TD-4K2-S) nailed it. Name a thing that you can do to an acoustic set, this edrums delivers, tom pads are tunable and muffled electronically, snare is tunable manually and electronically plus there are a lot of sounds to choose depending on the type of music you play. The only thing to remember when transporting it is to tighten all nuts&bolts to avoid loosing it.The addition of the KD-9 kick pad is a bonus since Roland did not put extra charge for it. I put a felt pad the one used for furnitures and presto the kick sensor is protected.
I checked Yammy DTX-550 due to the DTX technology but the extra cost is too high not to ignore.Roland TD4 can offer nice features. They are almost same, you can select from maple, wood, coated etc, but in terms of sound selections and overall features DTX-550 has a lot to offer but I don't need it that much. TD4 has 25 pre set tunes and it is still capable to select which kind of acoustic sound you want to hear plus you have a quite KD-9 kick. Regarding V cymbals they sound great.

        Amazing set!

Comments about Roland TD-4K2-S V-Compact Series Drum Set:

After about 2 years of an acoustic set i bought this one and I LOVE IT!!! The mesh snare feels great, and the choke-able cymbals are really good. I love the built in metronome and coach features are really helpful. I would recommend it to mid level drummers.

Acoustic drummer surprised by the TD-4

        By Converted Drummer

        from Fairfax, VA

Comments about Roland TD-4K2-S V-Compact Series Drum Set:

I've played acoustic drum kits for over 20 years. But our young church needed drums, and acoustic drums were impractical given our physical constraints. After trying multiple brands of electronic drum kits in the local store, I really liked the responsiveness of the Roland mesh pads so we bought the TD-4. I?ve been playing this kit for about 6 months now, and I am totally impressed. Our style of music is contemporary and the range spans from large and dramatic, to light and traditional.THE PADS:The snare mesh pad is the best! It?s responsive enough to catch flams, and drum rolls are smooth. And it catches rim shots too. The rubber pads for the toms are fine for me because I?m never doing intricate work on those drums anyway, and we saved costs. The dynamic responses of all the drum pads are smooth and realistic. I experimented with various sensitivity settings for each of the pads and settled in on the settings I have now, and really like the responsiveness and dynamic range of the entire kit.The cymbals pads took some getting used to, but I?m fine with them now. Again, after experimenting with various settings, I settled in on what is comfortable for me. The combination of the cymbal sound and programmable pad sensitivity allows for a very realistic response. I use the bow and edge of the cymbals all the time, so it?s nice that the pads can sense the different strokes. The kick drum pad is a little bouncy, and the kick beater tends to bounce quickly off the rubber pad. But I see that they?ve changed which kick drum pad comes with the TD-4 kit now. The hi hat control pedal took some getting used to because the release occurs much higher than a normal acoustic pedal. THE SOUNDS:One of the greatest benefits of playing an electronic kit is the variety of sounds available at the press of a button. I use up to 7 different kits in a typical set for variety. The TD-4 module has 14 kick drums, 16 snare drums, 21 toms, 4 hi hats, 8 crash cymbals, 3 ride cymbals, and 19 percussion instruments. And all of the settings are stored in one of 25 programmable drum kits. The reverb and mixer settings of each pad are programmable. You can change the tuning of each drum and the muffling of each drum. So getting the right sound is amazingly easy.PORTABILITY:We setup and tear down twice a week, so the lightweight and compactness of the TD-4 kit is very convenient. We bought the Roland travel bags, and in minutes the set collapses down into two easy-to-carry bags.Overall, I am amazingly surprised by the quality, value, responsiveness, dynamics, and portability of this kit. Thank you Roland!
