This review compares my Simmons SD7PK electronic drum set with my recent purchase of the Roland TD-4KP V-drum set. First off, it is disappointing that the design engineers in both companies gave no thought to the 10% of us who play left-handed. However, both sets can be assembled "backwards" without too much frustration.

The Simmons set is reasonably priced and is a decent beginner's set. My complaints about it were the lousy high-hat, and the dead spots in the tom heads. Also, the kick tower had to be restrained with baling wire, otherwise it would "walk" forward, even on carpet. The advantages of it, besides its light weight and portability, were the "variability" in setting it up – various heights, angles, positions of the drum pads. If desired, you could easily duplicate the setup of your acoustic drums.

The Roland TD-4KP which costs twice as much as the Simmons is, unfortunately, not twice the quality. If your priority in an electronic drum set is lightweight, tiny "footprint," and extreme portability, this set is for you. It is simple to pick up and carry around the house, through doorways, etc., with ease. Folded, it takes up virtually no space at all. The sound is good, and the high-hat, although not quite as good as a "real" high-hat is excellent. Much better than the Simmons.

However, the simplicity of this Roland design handicaps the drummer who wants "variability" in setting it up. For example, the snare drum cannot be raised high enough for a 6 foot tall drummer, in my opinion. I'm sitting with my seat down and my thighs horizontal, but the snare is still a bit too low. Also, the snare cannot be adjusted so that it is immediately behind Tom 1. Rather, the snare is kinda "between" Tom 1 and Tom 2. Take a look at the photograph in the Musician's Friend catalog, and you will see what I mean. Further, if I raise the high-hat to a sufficient height above the level of the snare drum, the Tom 1 is raised also, to a difficult height above the snare. Then you have to raise Tom 2 to the same awkward height, so that they are even with each other.

But if these minor annoyances don't bother you, this is probably an excellent purchase. To do better, you'd have to spend a lot more on an electronic drum set, and I wasn't willing to do that. A small footprint and extreme portability (and a better high-hat), at a moderate price were my priorities.

The sounds are quality. The pads are responsive for those subtle flavors. I expected more of an array of sounds. The amount of sounds are a bit limited. Handling the containment of the wires and keeping them in tow is not as easy as on the video. Was hoping the TD4 had at least 4 outputs....only has 2. But I am happy with the performance and size of it. Glad I bought it. BUT....I think the frame is too heavy. It could be lighter. They made the frame out of metal,,,instead of a really sturdy plastic. It's not that easy to carry up and down stairs. The Roland bag should be better for the amount of money it costs. If your talkin portable....the bag should have wheels and a pull out luggage type handle. The drums and the bag could be a lot more portable.

Comments about Roland V-Drums TD-4KP Portable Electronic Drum Set:

I'm a multiple instrumentalist and have wanted to play drums since I was ten. This is my first kit and it's going to keep me very happy for a long time. The feel and response are tight. Every setting and drum has a great sound with full dynamic range. This is an excellent, portable tool for your arsenal. In the store I preferred the sound to the other brands.

Comments about Roland V-Drums TD-4KP Portable Electronic Drum Set:

This is my first electronic experience. You will never replace the acoustic drum set so; don't get your hopes up. However, it has cool features and great for travel. You have to get a drum amp or you'll never get its potential also, it does not come with a kick pedal. Another expense along with cables. You'll end up spending over a thousand before you're done. Consider it a hybrid solution and easy to take with you to venues and small gigs.

Comments about Roland V-Drums TD-4KP Portable Electronic Drum Set:

If you check reviews on some other sites you may hear people wishing the pads were quieter. While they're definitely not silent, they're hardly what I would call loud. They are about as loud as any rubber practice pad would be, but for any drummer who lives in an apartment building, the sound is negligible.

As a gigging drummer who's played acoustic sets for 13 years, an apartment alternative helps me keep my skills sharp between practices. I still have my acoustic set at the practice space and it is still my primary set for rehearsals and gigs with the full band, but this would be a viable option for an acoustic practice or a low-key gig.

I was incredibly impressed by the customizing options w/ the sound module. I typically only play with one mounted tom, but 2 crashes and a ride. Changing the second mounted tom to a ride and swinging the arm around to the appropriate position was surprisingly simple. Be advised, the drums use a single trigger pad as opposed to the dual trigger cymbals, and so I would probably never use this for a gig. However, it's perfect for training the muscles and getting used to the positioning of a full kit.

Just like the description says, ideal for practices and small venues.

This set lives up to all expectations so far. My only issue is that I was caught off-guard to discover that there was no kick pedal included. Re-reading the description shows that it accurately only states that the kick drum PAD is included. However the picture shows a kick pedal--it really ought to have a disclaimer somewhere: (* kick pedal not included)

Comments about Roland V-Drums TD-4KP Portable Electronic Drum Set:

I've owned a Vdrum Professional set for over 10 years. I use them on every job I play out. They are fantastic. I bought the TD 4KP set for out of state (2200 miles away) practice, recording and playing jobs because of the size and price. I am pleasantly surprised! The hi hat and the cymbals sound a little better than my professional set. Keep in mind my TD 10 module is 15 years old.
My only complaint is that the adjustments for the pads and cymbal angles need a drum key to adjust. A simple wingnut like on my professional set would have been great...come on Roland you could've done that! I can adjust my entire professional set with my fingers.
I haven't plug them into a large PA system yet, but when I do, if they sound as good as my professional set, I will use them to play out sometimes because it's easy to move them. I think they just might come close!

One thing that I'm really disturbed about....I'm having creeping/ sliding problem on the side where the kick is. That is inexcusable!! This set is not just for amatuers...professionals play this set too! It should be slide proof! I shouldn't have to devise ways to keep it from sliding!

Comments about Roland V-Drums TD-4KP Portable Electronic Drum Set:

It's a great product if you don't have a lot of space. It's incredibly compact and very easy to set-up. It only took just over an hour to do the set-up. With headphones all someone on the outside can hear is tapping, so if you are in an environment where you don't want to make a lot of noise, it's perfect. I had to adjust the sound as best that I could. You must hit the pads directly on center for best sound. There is no give in that manner. You can adjust to your own height and positions. The high hat has no swivel, and the pads only go to a certain height. It would be good if they could go a bit taller. The high hat and the bass need louder sounds. All in all a great product that I am happy with.
