Comments about Sabian AAX/HHX Mix Cymbal Pack:

I bought these as an attempt to replicate the sound of my previous setup, which included 14" Zildjian New Beat Hats, 17" and 19" K Zildjian Thin Crashes, and a 21" Sabian Raw Bell Dry Ride. It was certainly more economical than going for the exact replacements.

The run down:

The AAX Xcelerator hats have the "wavey" bottom thing going to air from getting trapped, while also leading to a quick decay. This is good or bad depending on what you want to do. If you like to strike the hate once and get a long sustain, these will not work. If you want quick strokes for busy playing, they might be a good fit. They are not as bright as I feared they might be, and they have a pleasant "bark," not as funky as a K Zildjian or Sabian HH, but warmer than I would expect.

The 16" Crash lives up to its Xplosion name, opening up quickly with minimal effort, with a reasonably quick decay. It is just a tad dark, in a good way, but it is much more focused than something like a traditional K or Sabian HH.

The 18" Crash really caught me off guard, and not in a good way. It opens up a little too quickly for a cymbal its size, and it is jarringly loud compared to the rest of the set. Mine is also higher pitched than the 16" on the initial attack. I crash it because it is there, but for me what works best for me is riding the large, unlathed bell. I'd rather just have a Raw Bell Ride, but this is a pleasing substitute.

The ride is a slightly more focused version of the classic Medium Ride. It has fewer overtones, but is not "pingy" or "dry." I would classify it as "safe." That is to say, you could use it at most gigs and it would not draw attention to itself, but neither is it a "wow, what a great cymbal" ride.

Despite my misgivings, I do think this is a quality set that is worth considering, especially is you want fast, brighter hats and ride, without the cutting bright crashes that are frequently packaged with that combo.
