These cymbals have so many uses! I use them for punk, gospel, rock, metal, and jazz. They always sound perfect.
I have an AAX dark crash. I think the AAX cymbals are awsome. My Dark crash is loud and punches its sound into whatever im playing. It has a dark tone that is slightly sloppy which sounds amazing with metal or rock. These cymbals overal sound great.
First off, I own a 15" AAXplosion, but I have borrowed a 17" and it's pretty much ridiculous what these can do. I play rock in my basement, and acoustic gigs. Whenever I read up on cymbals they say: "Bright cymbals cut through and darks blend!" Well, these do both. They cut really nice in rock and heavier stuff, but have a really nice softness and shimmering darkness in acoustic. Great bell tones, and awesome for recording and live. How do they do it?
Really, I love these cymbals. Such a great tone live and recording. Excellent craft and quality...There is a but... Heavy hitters, stay away. I replace these cymbals a couple times a year. It's my own fault, I am a heavy hitter and cymbals are an integral part of my phrasing... I have recently joined a rock/old metal band, and have gone through 4 cymbals in the last 6 months. So, by all means, buy these cymbals for shows and recording. But for the practice room, or exteneded touring, go look at the AA Metal X Crash.
I purchased these last week following a music store excursion during which I sampled attack, swell, bell, and surface sounds of about three dozen crash cymbals. If you like rich, dark crashes with excellent bells for Afro-Cuban playing, these are the cymbals for you. I used them in a performance for the first time today, and had no complaints apart from some difficulty with projection (but I also play a bit lighter than many drummers). I feel that these are more versatile cymbals than the more pricy Sabian HHX line, and are similar in feel to Zildjian A Customs but with a darker timbre and better bells. Throw in the free cymbal bag, sticks, and stand, plus the per-cymbal savings, and this is truly an excellent deal!
