It feels slightly disingenuous writing this review as I have only had a couple of chances to play these cymbals full-bore since I bought them. Ask me in six months what I think, then we will have something of substance to discuss. Having said that, I have hymned and hawed for months, agonizing over cymbals before selecting these, at times leaning toward Zildjian K's, K Customs, A Customs, and Meinl Benny Greb Vintage Sand Cymbals. Bottom line, I am totally blown away, and completely happy with this cymbal set. It is basically exactly what I was looking for. I play in a 12-piece funk/soul band, so I really wanted some great hats. I had been playing some old New Beats, which I loved, but they were just slightly too mushy for this application. The Evolution hats have all the qualities of the New Beats with slightly more bite, which is perfect for me. The crashes are fantastic. Nothing more to be said there, just totally bomb, great crashes with the right balance of buttery wash and cut with quick decay. They do their business and then get out of the way. The ride has been much maligned in previous reviews, but I love it! I have been playing a 21" Zildjian K Constantinople Medium Thin Low ride, which I am very much in love with, but the evolution ride has a sick bell, decent ping, and a wash that gets my adrenaline going and makes me channel my inner Alan Evans (Soulive fame, check it out!). If you are an armchair internet cymbal stalker like me, then take it from me, these cymbals are totally righteous. Pay the money and get them, then hope and pray you know what to do with them once you've got them because they can go wherever you want them to go. Not to sound cheesy, but they might, just might help you evolve as a drummer.

I bought this cymbal pack (HHX Evolution 20" ride, 18" ozone, 16" crash, 14" hi hats) after reading all of the glowing reviews. I have been playing for 40 years, have played in original and cover bands, and currently play in an active cover band. We play everything from Adele to Zeppelin, country to rock to pop. I've played and owned many different kinds of Zildjian, Sabian, and Paiste cymbals - all top of the line. I got a good price on this HHX Evolution Pack on Black Friday, so I bought it. Keep in mind that cymbal taste is very subjective. However, I was very disappointed. The ride has too much wash and bell wasn't great. 18" Ozone is too loud and the sound wasn't for me (16" might be good...). So, I immediately sold the ride and the ozone. The 16" crash and the 14" hi hats were very good. They're both a tad brighter than I woul, but work well. On par with a 16" AAX-Plosion and a lighter set of New Beat hi hats. They were not better than my existing set up, but probably as good. I have found that it's difficult to impossible to satisfy your cymbal needs with one "pack" or model of cymbals. I end up mixing and matching to get what I want. To give you a sense of my tastes and what I find works: For playing out I use a set of Zildjian A Custom 20" ride, 18" crash, and 16" crash, with Zildjian new beat 14" hats (they sounded better than the A Customs). For practice or studio I tend to use Sabian HH 21" raw bell ride, Paiste 16" full crash, and now - HHX Evolution 16" crash and 14" hi hats. That HH raw bell ride sounds great, but not quite loud enough for live bar gigs. I also like Sabian 16" AAX stage crash, 16" AAX-plosion crash, and 17" AA crash. My next buy is probably the 21" AAX raw bell ride. Versatile ride, sweet bell. Bottom line: try your cymbals or buy them right so you can sell them at the same cost. Mix and match to get the best sound for you. If you are thinking about this set, definitely try each of them out first. Hope this helps

Sabian HHX Evolution Crash

Comments about Sabian HHX Evolution Pack with Free HHX Evolution Ozone Crash:

I've been playing drums for over 40 years, I've bought a lot cymbals, so the first thing I can say about the Evolution line is that is that they are a great value. I have used them in many situations from studio, live concert and just jamming with friends. These cymbals produce a sound like no other. I don't have to lay into them to them to get the sound I want. They react to a just a soft tap with the drumstick. It's awesome, that's what I love about them. I've had other drummers say "What is that cymbal ?" If I do lay into it with a hard crash, it produces a bright and shimmering sound that dies out fast so you can continue on. Don't pass these up and wish you had gotten them sooner.

Comments about Sabian HHX Evolution Pack with Free HHX Evolution Ozone Crash:

I've used a lot of A. Zildjian, and K. Zildjian cymbals in the past. My favorites were the original (no longer made) Istanbul K's. They just had a very unique sound that allowed me to add some creative punctuation to the music. I had never tried Sabians before, but after reading about the company, reading the reviews, and visiting the music stores to listen to some of them (and a lot of other cymbals), I decided to go with the HHX series and purchased the Sabian Evolution Pack.
According some versions of Sabian history, the Sabian HH (hand hammered) series is the closest thing to the original Istanbul K's you'll get and I believe it! The Sabian HHX Evolutions have a deep, organic, white noise flavor that I remember from my K's and love. The hats, ride, and 16" crash are just amazing, and the 18" Ozone has a great instantaneous trash/crash sound. I'm very happy with these cymbals.

i
i just got these a couple of days ago. i've used mainly zildjian since "the beginning", with a couple of sabians thrown in for texture, but these. WOW! an amazing combination of trashy, and bright. i absolutely love them, and recommend them unequivocally. the bell on the ride cuts very nicely, and one can get any variety of sounds out of it. pingy with the tip of the stick, big and washy on the shoulder. it could be used as a crash. the 18" ozone is quite trashy, with bright overtones. the 16" is the lowest pitched 16 i've ever heard. the hihats are very bright. the bottom hat is extremely heavy. i'm very pleased with these. even the lead singer was smiling. he didn't know why. "something about those cymbals".

Blown Away!

Comments about Sabian HHX Evolution Pack with Free HHX Evolution Ozone Crash:

I am a newcomer to drumming. I didn't want to waste my time with a bad quality kit. I got these cymbals for my PDP kit and they are amazing. They will produce a different tone if you hit them with the shoulder or tip and depending on how you play. The most musical cymbals I've ever heard. I play with a band now and they've never heard cymbals like this. The only downfall in my opinion is the ride will really sing. It's a little too pretty for my style, but it is still amazing. The bell sounds amazing. The Ozone is my favorite. The hats are musical, but don't lose their rude tone for playing rock at all. Best investment I've made so far. They have the cut to get through the mix without throwing off the groove.

Dark cutting blows of incredibleness!

Comments about Sabian HHX Evolution Pack with Free HHX Evolution Ozone Crash:

I was originally looking to buy Sabian's AAX line to begin with, until I ran up on a video show-casing HHX Evolution. I knew even from the poor quality of the video that these where the cymbals for me. The ozone crash is icing on the cake and is something that will give your kit a distinctive quality. the regular crash, is dark yet sweet and cutting and full. the hats are crisp and and heavy yet light when opened. The ride is smooth and engaging, the smallest tap will set it off yet it's very easy to control. this may be a intermediate cymbal but as far as the sound quality and control that you get with these, i would have to say they belong in much higher class.

Comments about Sabian HHX Evolution Pack with Free HHX Evolution Ozone Crash:

I love the cymbals. I was using a much darker set of cymbals for the last year. The HHX Evolution are just perfect. Not too bright, and yet, with a hint of darkness. A great blend of metals. The lower end Sabian can sound a bit "metal-ish" and tinny. These sound full and rich. I was actually surprised. Now I like them so much I'm selling my other set of cymbals. I've never owned Sabian before. I was a Zildjian brand devotee, them, now Meinl. These are awesome....

Comments about Sabian HHX Evolution Pack with Free HHX Evolution Ozone Crash:

These cymbals are stunning. When I received them the first thing I noticed was a signature on the inside of the bell of my crash. The signature is that of the Sabian employee who was in charge of sonically matching the cymbals so that they sound good as a group, not just individually. This is a key factor to the quality of these cymbals, because there are no two identically sounding cymbals.

These cymbals sound great, however when you buy them you may want to consider a "third crash." Although the o-zone crash is allot of fun top use and can have many applications, it doesn't work on more "traditional" settings, where you want two crashes.

These cymbals are UNMATCHED in sound. They are rich, vibrant and somehow maintain their sharpness and edge while being full of beautiful flourishing notes. I can't speak enough good about these cymbals. I spent several hours tapping away at various cymbals in guitar center to include Zildian and Paiste and other Sabians...these just stand out above the rest. For under $800 these cymbals are the best investment in your kit and drumming career you will ever make!
