I bought the hi's about 8 months ago, and when I recently got some new hardware and was rearraging some of my cymbals to make the hardware less chaotic and messy, I found it difficult for me to let myself take my Max Stax off my kit, even just for a minute! From the first day I brought it home and started jamming with it, it felt so perfect, that excellent little accent, sort of the perfect little spice for my playing, and it hasn't let me down since. Such an open-ended cymbal, open for all sorts of new ways of playing it and making it sound great. 10 on features, 10 on quality, 9 on value because I felt the price was a little steep and while it ca find it's place in most types of music, there are the few exceptions that it just doesn't flow with, but overall still a 10 in my book. An excellent buy for any drummer looking to add some new zest and flavor to his playing.

These have a unique sound that is great for adding some cymbal accents into your playing. However, don't expect to be using them like a crash cymbal. Fast attack them during a fill and move on.

They are not for everyone. They are pricey (you're paying for Mike's name) but since they are cast from the HH series they are some of the best. The sound you get out of them can be tweaked by either loosening them or tightening them down. Experiment until the desired sound is achieved.

Because you hit them on an upturned edge, they will chew through your sticks if you treat them like a crash cymbal and play on them often.

Comments about Sabian Mike Portnoy Max Stax Pack:

Ive been lookin for the perfect effects cymbal for a while. i saw this one in a few videos, like the studio recording of Objustification for BTBAM, and i fell in love cuz it sounded perfect. but when i got it, it sounds WAY different. The point was to have no resonance, but it has a really annoying resonance. maybe im just stacking it wrong though

Comments about Sabian Mike Portnoy Max Stax Pack:

Very quick attack and great sounding. Dont get discouraged in the music store when listening to these...by them selves, without music they sound strange...But while your jammin they sound great. I've had them for three years-they're still holding up strong

It is the perfect tool in rock styles, to weak music, to give the percussionist that extra touch.

Comments about Sabian Mike Portnoy Max Stax Pack:

I love this sound, but is not at all a cymbal to be used without being aware of its sounds. Due to the specificity of its sound and it not being like a "generic" cymbal, Make sure you know what your buying before you spend the money. I use it all the time for a style of playing, my prog side, but i have never seen a need for it elsewhere, besides metal and its subgenres. BUT, it has a great short trashy click sound, good for putting in fills with the bass drum, good transition from drums to cymbals and a good short accent sound.

The Coolest Effects Cymbals

Comments about Sabian Mike Portnoy Max Stax Pack:

I had the 10" pair for a few months now. It is the greatest thing on my kit. I couldn't play without it, I wouldn't have the same feel. Its truly amazing. It many not sound good alone, but when jamming to music or just playing on your kit, it comes to life. Its a must have cymbal for all dream theater lovers who are drummers. It can be used with any type of music. I recommend buying the mid or low pair. Its a little over priced, so do what I did and try to find it used. They are rare used but are a great deal.

2 cymbals for the price of one!

By Andrew-3fqyK

Comments about Sabian Mike Portnoy Max Stax Pack:

These sets are great. you can use the together, as a stack, like they are 'supposed' to be used, or you can use the 2 cymbals as individual instruments and get even more unique sounds out of them that no other cymbals i've heard can reproduce.

Comments about Sabian Mike Portnoy Max Stax Pack:

A nice trashy effect, but to pay for two quality Sabian cymabls to get that sound is just nuts. Just get a 12" Wuhan china and mount it on top of any extra hi-hat or crash you have. Use the nut on top to vary how tight or loose they interact. Drill holes in the crash and add rivets for sizzle.
