This is a great djembe for the price. I have one from Ghana that sounds better and has authentic carving, but that's only noticeable when they are side by side.
Otherwise, this djembe plays clear, has a nice tone, and very distinct bass, tone, and slap sounds, making it easy to play.
It comes with lots of extra rope for tuning.
Note to those who a)complain that the djembe arrives out of tune, and b) report that it has a nice carrying strap:
For one, djembes SHOULD be shipped with the tuning slacked. This allows the skin to expand and contract with the changes of humidity and temperature during shipping. A fully tuned djembe sent on a cross country trip and sitting in hot trucks and cold planes will quite likely arrive with a ripped head.
Furthermore, that nice "strap" some remark on is actually the rope that allows you to tune the djembe when you receive it. Its very easy to do, check out youtube.
I am very happy with this djembe.

Again, if you're not going to subject this djembe to any kind of non-hand force, it may work for you. It has a nice "pop" to it. Just don't let anyone touch it that doesn't know how to properly use the thing!
Seems to be a geat value, and it is... if you play it very carefully...
It has a great sound, a nice strap, and an interesting appearance.
This is where it falls short.
I bought one of these for my elementary classroom. I was very pleased with it, until one of my kids hit it with a felt mallet. I then found out what I was dealing with here. First, the head ripped with the mild force of the mallet. Next, I found that the head, which they say is goat skin, is more akin to paper, not skin. Hard to validate that it is not goat skin, but it tears and rips like a heavyweight paper. To illustrate the frailty of the drum, I tore off a bit more for each class. Tears like paper... feels like paper.
So, beware. This drum will not withstand mild blunt force. At all.
Value is meaningless if it has the capactiy to tear with mild force. Granted, one could argue that if you hit a djembe with a blunt-force item, you deserve to have it rip. I'd argue against that theory. A decent djembe head should be able to withstand a bit of abuse before it fails. This failed the first time.

Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:
I am a drummer in a band, and have many drums myself. My son is also learning to become a drummer and has many drums. I ordered this drum for my nephew because he seems to have the drum infatuation as well. Now he is playing it everyday. Perfect drum for him at this point.

Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:
I found this to be the best drum for the price. I wanted to try hand drumming for the first time without spending hundreds of dollars, and this fits the bill perfectly. I have had many drummers who have played many drums for decades say this is a great sounding drum at this price. Regarding the negative review, of course this drum is not for kids to beat with a mallet. I have played it for months now with hands only, no problems.

Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:
I bought the Large version.
When I got this djembe out of the box, it sounded pretty bad--very ringing, no bass. Then I realized that I had to tune it and that there are directions that come with it (as well as better directions online). Now it sounds great, and tuning wasn't difficult.
The head does feel thin compared to more expensive djembes, but those are more expensive djembes.

Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:
I was looking for a djembe that was a good price, and would fit me as I am 6 foot. I went with the XL, and am pretty satisfied. I feel with djembes you get what you pay for, the design of it is very basic, and not nearly as decorative as djembes can get. It sounds good, not the greatest, but like I said, you get what you pay for.
I recommend this djembe to anybody who needs a larger djembe and is on a budget.
And P.S. if you've never rope tuned a djembe before, it takes quite a few "diamonds" to bring it up to proper pitch, go on youtube if you don't know how to tune one.

Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:
Solid Construction and made from real wood. The head already tuned and is very responsive to the touch of my hand. Nice lows, mids and highs can be produced from this instrument.
Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:
You can't find better price and quality! They sound very good. I got the large and small ones. I am very happy with the sound and the product!
Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:
I had another djembe made from materials that were designed to resist climate and temp changes, etc. And had a standard tunable head like a drum from a trap set. But it did not sound good, or natural and there was not much versatility.
This djembe is three times the drum that one was, for half the price. I can get lots of different tons out of it, you can push on the head while striking it to change pitch, you can get a great variety of slaps and bass tones, depending on the placement and shape of your hand and can even spin the drum until you find the sweet spot for the particular song/recording you are doing. I have not retuned it, it sounded great out of the box.
I do think that tuning one by unweaving and then reweaving the ropes might be crazy hard, but I'll cross that bridge and I can say this is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.
Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:
This drum sounds amazing! I got the Large and was a little dissapointed that it wasnt as big as I thought it would be but it worked out because it works great for the music im playing and who im playing with. I would highly recommend this drum to anybody looking for a Djembe.
I like the rope tuning. It gives it an original look and does the job well. Its a little confusing on how to tune it at first but you catch on after a couple times.
The quality of this drum is excellent! The skin on the drum sounds great, the ropes are quite durable, and how the drum was made in all is nothing to talk bad about.
Probably the best drum you can get for the money. I havent tried any of the others so dont quote me on it, but this drum is well worth more then the price you pay for.
