OVERVIEW

Resonant, deep sounds and scorching slaps from these traditional style djembes.

The Shalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe is highly resonant with a deep, rich sound. Each djembe is hand-carved from a single piece of mahogany. As a result, the whole body of the drum resonates with each slap offering a huge, incomparable sound. This authentic craftsmanship also features drum heads made of real goat skin. The goat skin is thinner than most drum heads and makes for huge bass sounds and popping slaps. The ropes on these djembes are pre-stretched so that once they are tuned they will hold that precise tension. Available djembes range in size from extra small to extra large. The diameter of each djembe may vary slightly due to the unique, authentic craftsmanship of being carved from a single piece of wood. Enjoy the true qualities of a traditional African drum with this Shalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe.

This is a great djembe for the price. I have one from Ghana that sounds better and has authentic carving, but that's only noticeable when they are side by side.

Otherwise, this djembe plays clear, has a nice tone, and very distinct bass, tone, and slap sounds, making it easy to play.

It comes with lots of extra rope for tuning.

Note to those who a)complain that the djembe arrives out of tune, and b) report that it has a nice carrying strap:

For one, djembes SHOULD be shipped with the tuning slacked. This allows the skin to expand and contract with the changes of humidity and temperature during shipping. A fully tuned djembe sent on a cross country trip and sitting in hot trucks and cold planes will quite likely arrive with a ripped head.

Furthermore, that nice "strap" some remark on is actually the rope that allows you to tune the djembe when you receive it. Its very easy to do, check out youtube.

I am very happy with this djembe.

Again, if you're not going to subject this djembe to any kind of non-hand force, it may work for you. It has a nice "pop" to it. Just don't let anyone touch it that doesn't know how to properly use the thing!
Seems to be a geat value, and it is... if you play it very carefully...

It has a great sound, a nice strap, and an interesting appearance.
This is where it falls short.

I bought one of these for my elementary classroom. I was very pleased with it, until one of my kids hit it with a felt mallet. I then found out what I was dealing with here. First, the head ripped with the mild force of the mallet. Next, I found that the head, which they say is goat skin, is more akin to paper, not skin. Hard to validate that it is not goat skin, but it tears and rips like a heavyweight paper. To illustrate the frailty of the drum, I tore off a bit more for each class. Tears like paper... feels like paper.

So, beware. This drum will not withstand mild blunt force. At all.
Value is meaningless if it has the capactiy to tear with mild force. Granted, one could argue that if you hit a djembe with a blunt-force item, you deserve to have it rip. I'd argue against that theory. A decent djembe head should be able to withstand a bit of abuse before it fails. This failed the first time.

    Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:

I had another djembe made from materials that were designed to resist climate and temp changes, etc. And had a standard tunable head like a drum from a trap set. But it did not sound good, or natural and there was not much versatility.

This djembe is three times the drum that one was, for half the price. I can get lots of different tons out of it, you can push on the head while striking it to change pitch, you can get a great variety of slaps and bass tones, depending on the placement and shape of your hand and can even spin the drum until you find the sweet spot for the particular song/recording you are doing. I have not retuned it, it sounded great out of the box.

I do think that tuning one by unweaving and then reweaving the ropes might be crazy hard, but I'll cross that bridge and I can say this is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.

        I love this drum!

        Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:

This drum sounds amazing! I got the Large and was a little dissapointed that it wasnt as big as I thought it would be but it worked out because it works great for the music im playing and who im playing with. I would highly recommend this drum to anybody looking for a Djembe.
I like the rope tuning. It gives it an original look and does the job well. Its a little confusing on how to tune it at first but you catch on after a couple times.
The quality of this drum is excellent! The skin on the drum sounds great, the ropes are quite durable, and how the drum was made in all is nothing to talk bad about.
Probably the best drum you can get for the money. I havent tried any of the others so dont quote me on it, but this drum is well worth more then the price you pay for.

        Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:

I bought this as a quieter alternative to my drum kit and love it. It arrived very quickly and already pretty well in tuned. No complaints at all other than the medium one being on back order for a long time but it was for the best because the large was more along the lines of what i wanted in the first place.

        Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:

I ordered myself the XL size Schalloch Djembe drum a bit uneasy about the price. My friend had bought a good quality smaller djembe from a fair for almost three times the amount, so the 130 price tag made me a bit worried about the quality. However, upon recieving my djembe in the mail only like 3 days later, I was amazed at how great this djembe sounded. The head of the drum was just as big as described, the body had no cracks or nicks with a very dark almost black color and the highs and lows the drum achieved was incredible. Sharp hits to the edges produced the sweetest high ping sound I've ever heard from a djembe where palm slaps to the middle produced a very rich deep bass tone. The sheer size of the XL djembe also has a lot of potential as far as volume goes, you would definitely stand out at a drum circle. All in all, if you are worried about the quality of this drum due to the nice price tag, dont be, this drum is awesome.

I found this to be the best drum for the price. I wanted to try hand drumming for the first time without spending hundreds of dollars, and this fits the bill perfectly. I have had many drummers who have played many drums for decades say this is a great sounding drum at this price. Regarding the negative review, of course this drum is not for kids to beat with a mallet. I have played it for months now with hands only, no problems.

                I bought the Large version.
When I got this djembe out of the box, it sounded pretty bad--very ringing, no bass. Then I realized that I had to tune it and that there are directions that come with it (as well as better directions online). Now it sounds great, and tuning wasn't difficult.
The head does feel thin compared to more expensive djembes, but those are more expensive djembes.

                  Comments about Schalloch Rope-Tuned Djembe:

I was looking for a djembe that was a good price, and would fit me as I am 6 foot. I went with the XL, and am pretty satisfied. I feel with djembes you get what you pay for, the design of it is very basic, and not nearly as decorative as djembes can get. It sounds good, not the greatest, but like I said, you get what you pay for.

I recommend this djembe to anybody who needs a larger djembe and is on a budget.

And P.S. if you've never rope tuned a djembe before, it takes quite a few "diamonds" to bring it up to proper pitch, go on youtube if you don't know how to tune one.

I had ordered 2 of the 12-inch head size drums. It looks great in person, has a nice soft head and great shoulder strap, sounded great for the price, however, both of them had cracks in it. I had to return them both. Although the cracks did not affect the performance, I was concerned about them spreading.

I bought the 12.5"-14" version of this djembe and received one with a 14" head. It came very out of tune. The head was really loose. After paying for a tune, the drum sounded decent. The ringing overtones are very noticable, which is my main complaint. Bass tones are strong. Slaps are really easy to elicit from the drum. Getting a distinguished open tone isn't as easy but doable after getting used to the djembe.Overall, this isn't a bad djembe for a beginner and definitely worth the price.
