Resonant, deep sounds and scorching slaps from these traditional style djembes.

These professional-grade instruments are carved by hand from one solid piece of mahogany. This authentic craftsmanship is needed to get the huge sound--the whole body of the drum resonates as one unit since it is hollowed from one tree. The heads are real goat skin, which is thinner than most heads so you can easily get the popping slap tones and the giant bass tones. The ropes are pre-stretched so once you set the tuning it will hold the tension (not many djembes have this professional detail).

Note that diameters are listed by range due to their hand-carved nature and individual drums vary slightly in their dimensions.

This is a great djembe for the price. I have one from Ghana that sounds better and has authentic carving, but that's only noticeable when they are side by side.

Otherwise, this djembe plays clear, has a nice tone, and very distinct bass, tone, and slap sounds, making it easy to play.

It comes with lots of extra rope for tuning.

Note to those who a)complain that the djembe arrives out of tune, and b) report that it has a nice carrying strap:

For one, djembes SHOULD be shipped with the tuning slacked. This allows the skin to expand and contract with the changes of humidity and temperature during shipping. A fully tuned djembe sent on a cross country trip and sitting in hot trucks and cold planes will quite likely arrive with a ripped head.

Furthermore, that nice "strap" some remark on is actually the rope that allows you to tune the djembe when you receive it. Its very easy to do, check out youtube.

I am very happy with this djembe.

Again, if you're not going to subject this djembe to any kind of non-hand force, it may work for you. It has a nice "pop" to it. Just don't let anyone touch it that doesn't know how to properly use the thing!
Seems to be a geat value, and it is... if you play it very carefully...

It has a great sound, a nice strap, and an interesting appearance.
This is where it falls short.

I bought one of these for my elementary classroom. I was very pleased with it, until one of my kids hit it with a felt mallet. I then found out what I was dealing with here. First, the head ripped with the mild force of the mallet. Next, I found that the head, which they say is goat skin, is more akin to paper, not skin. Hard to validate that it is not goat skin, but it tears and rips like a heavyweight paper. To illustrate the frailty of the drum, I tore off a bit more for each class. Tears like paper... feels like paper.

So, beware. This drum will not withstand mild blunt force. At all.
Value is meaningless if it has the capactiy to tear with mild force. Granted, one could argue that if you hit a djembe with a blunt-force item, you deserve to have it rip. I'd argue against that theory. A decent djembe head should be able to withstand a bit of abuse before it fails. This failed the first time.

Disappointed. Drum damaged as a result of poor packaging. No fill around drum and barely taped box. Contacted service rep last night. Contacted another service rep this morning at UPS store to send package label to return. Second rep had no info of damaged drum like I was promised by the first rep I spoke to. Frustrating and time consuming. I am wondering now when I will get the replacement drum. Please, contact me when the new drum is on its way.

When I first got it out of the box it looked great, and it was in tune. I looked up a video to learn how to play it, and the djembe that the guy had sounded near to the quality of this djembe, and he got his for around 300. So overall, great djembe for the price.

Wanted inexpensive djembes for a church intergenerational drum circle, and decided on the XS Schallochs. Have only tried one myself so far, and definitely takes some getting used to with such a small sweet spot. Is nice that it is easy to carry around and just grab for some quick play during TV commercials.

I ordered this drum for my nephew because he seems to have the drum infatuation as well. Now he is playing it everyday. Perfect drum for him at this point.

I found this to be the best drum for the price. I wanted to try hand drumming for the first time without spending hundreds of dollars, and this fits the bill perfectly. I have had many drummers who have played many drums for decades say this is a great sounding drum at this price. Regarding the negative review, of course this drum is not for kids to beat with a mallet. I have played it for months now with hands only, no problems.

                                            I bought the Large version.
When I got this djembe out of the box, it sounded pretty bad--very ringing, no bass. Then I realized that I had to tune it and that there are directions that come with it (as well as better directions online). Now it sounds great, and tuning wasn't difficult.
The head does feel thin compared to more expensive djembes, but those are more expensive djembes.
