Very quick, I've been playing drums for over 30 years, and have an acoustic set. I wanted a great kit, but couldn't afford something on my level (yet). I got this set on sale, and didn't think it would change my life, but the idea of playing anytime I wanted was overwhelming. OOTB, set-up took about an hour, box to playing. I was disappointed by the limitations: single-trigger per pad limited placement options, and relatively small sound library (especially the crash cymbals). However, a week later after some tweaking of the sensitivity settings, and getting the pads in just the right spot, I'm in heaven. It's starting to feel close to a real kit. One thing that has been noted in several places on the 'net is that you can't have a double kick, because of the proprietary nature of the pedal itself, and the small pad size, combined with being unable to handle fast signals. I've adjusted the kick enough to get very natural feeling "ghost" beats with it, but that wasn't enough. Last night, I got smart. The high hat pedal has 3 sounds(!): Closed, Open, and the middle sound which is the closing of the hats from open. YOU CAN ASSIGN A KICK SOUND TO THAT ONE! You can't pull off a few hi-hat sounds when you do it, but it still plays open and closed. But, the BEST part is to play some blazing double-bass. So, if that was keeping you from getting this very reasonably priced "entry-level" kit, there you go. Also, keep in mind that the triggers can be plugged into another module and used just as easily, and incorporated into another/existing kit, so there's that. For me, this was the "beginner" set that is good enough for an "advanced" player, and very affordable. Go for it!

Best to briefly explain events as they happened:
Ordered kit for recording; I am a guitarist. Kit arrived...MANY boxes within boxes. Unpacked all boxes and set up. Missing tom bracket. Called Simmons, customer service person said "newer set and didn't know if they had spare parts for it"! Said call back Musicians Friend. Called back Musicians Friend. Only way to get the one bracket was to re-box the entire set and get a new set!! Ugggh! Contacted Simmons through their website. Problem wasn't a choice on their FAQ area. Finally got an email back with a different number. Called that Simmons number and reached helpful guy. Sent me a new bracket. Set complete 3 weeks later! So frustrated by this whole experience that I would give it 1 star, however, not representative of the drums; just mediocre customer service (the first contact I made to Simmons AND their website). Set is pretty cool however, I noticed what other drummers noticed...hitting multiple drums simultaneously or too fast seems to leave some of the beats out, like they should be more sensitive. In all fairness, you may be able to adjust that out to make them more sensitive; or at least I'm going to try. If you cannot, I'd give the drums two stars; if you can, I'd revise the drums to 4. Time will tell. Jury is still out.

I waited for the price to come down. Now that I got the kit I would pay double. I love it. Practice with the headphones or plug in the sound system. You cannot beat this kit. Especially the price. Read the book, you can adjust the mod box for a lot of sounds. Hit one pad and the other plays? Adjust the parameter. Like I said, read the instructions. Excellent job on this set.

Comments about Simmons SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drumset:

Bought this for my 13 year old son who has expressed an interest in learning the drums. He has really loved this set, and for the price it's an excellent set! It's probably not going to be suitable for long-term use (he'll need actual drums if he sticks to it), but it was a great deal and a great way to get his feet wet on drumming.

Really good set for the price, like someone else said you can change the highhat control pedal to be a kick pedal and play double bass sections, it also still acts as a high hat open and closed when you do so. Sound is really good and I run it through a DAW and play VST drums no issues at all

The first tom seems to be not as loud and responsive as the other ones. Also, the overall output volume is pretty low. Decent set for practice only.
