My primary use for this is studio work and although I will be using samples the stock sounds on this are good enough for full band rehersals. The touch and response is pretty good and the hi hat response is good as well. I think the price point is a real winner with the quality and features this provides. Especially compared to drum pads as well as other more expensive e-drum kits.
The only con is the instructions, pretty sparse and ere is not map layout for the midi notes for each piece. You will have to use trial and error in your daw and drum sample mapper.

My original purpose in buying this kit was to replace my daughter's broken Rock Band kit (with the 3 cymbal add-on)... I was disappointed to learn only after it arrived that the MIDI connection is USB as opposed to the standard 5 pin plug (search as I might - before and after - I could find no mention of this or see it in the pictures). BUT, being a professional musician familiar with MIDI, it was no big deal to hook the kit's USB MIDI up to a computer, run a standard MIDI cable out of my MIDI interface into the Squire MIDI controller for Wii that I also purchased, turn on MIDI Thru in my sequencer software and the kit worked perfectly without needing to remap any notes!!
The control placement is a little odd and I found myself tweaking the hi-hat and crash pad locations to try to protect it from my daughter's stray hits...
I've also used it myself to wrap my hands around a tune before rehearsal... the internal sounds are OK but again you'd need to go through a computer (as I did above) to get it to trigger an external drum module like a D4 or what have you.
I also found the headphone send to be a little underpowered for my taste... maybe that's by design so users aren't killing their hearing or blowing up headphones then blaming the company... :) Running everything through a small mixer gave my ears just enough extra.
On the whole I'm pretty pleased with the kit - even with its layout falling somewhere between conventional and Rock Band - and you can't beat (sorry - no pun intended) getting the Simmons name on a kit for the price!!

Comments about Simmons SDXpress2 Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

Drum kit cannot be used on a standalone basis: the sound from the speakers or headphone is too low. Can't even hear the kick pedal! The only way to use this kit is through USB connection to a computer & use it to drive software like addictive drum or EZdrummer.

For the price it is a great kit to use a midi controller to your drum software application. You have the feeling of the "real" thing. Specially useful for guitarist...

I used mainly to add drum tracks to my recordings: I'm a guitarist composer mainly

I purchased this item(on sale) for middle school ROCK MUSIC CLUB. We neither had a budget nor space for a "real" drum kit. 3 weeks in & its taking the full licking that the 13 yr old drummers are unleashing on it. I'm NOT a skin basher by trade but if you ask me, for the $$$$ this thing goes far beyond sonic expectations. I like this thing so much i just ordered a 2nd one for my own kids @ home! enjoy.

some sounds are excellent, excellent value for the price to performance. the set is a bit shakey when played hard. the hit hat sensitivity is poor, the volume with the pedal is much louder than with the stick. overall definitely it worth it.

Comments about Simmons SDXpress2 Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

I can recommend this if you understad what your getting. The price is the indicator. The drums have a small strike area, the bass drum has to be really wacked for it to be hearable and the cymbals become indistinct when you do a roll on them. But it is a nice set if you are looking for something to play at home that doesn't take up a lot of space. I'm pleased with what I got because for the price I was worried that it would be worse. The assembly was easy, I can play along with my favorite tunes or with my musician kids and that's all I wanted.

Bought just to have a set to bang on when friends come over. Build quality is ok for such a cheap unit but the sound is terrible. Snare may be quiet one hit and then very loud the next hit. Bass drum sound is way too quiet and doesn't match the rest of the kit even after much adjustment. Number display started to flicker almost immediately. It works but don't expect too much - it's pretty much a toy. It was very easy to unbox and set up.

We have purchased many items from Musicians Friend,at a store in Texas and have always been very pleased, the electronic drum set for our grandson,is perfect for a beginner, the toms are a little flat, it all sounds better hooked to the amplifier. My grandson (15) put it together himself, and immediately hooked up his iphone, turtle beach wireless head set. He was so excited, he drumed for hours.

Comments about Simmons SDXpress2 Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

I bought this kit as a gift for my son's 3rd birthday. I loved the idea of volume control. I can't emphasize that notion enough.

First and foremost, this kit is entry level. Even having said that, it came equipped with more than features than I expected. It has 10 preset kits, and one "user kit". I was most impressed with the sound offerings, there are a plethora of snare, tom, bass, cymbal, hi-hat sounds in addition to the 10 sample kits. You really can create a great sounding custom kit.

Downfall: Volume has to be pretty high to hear the sensitivity of the hits, the pads are very small, and you have little freedom in terms of adjusting positions of pads once they've been installed.

My 3-yr old is a huge fan of the kit, and I enjoy it quite a bit myself. It's not a high risk-high reward deal. It is a good kit at an affordable price.

Finally bit the dust and got myself a digital drum set, and....I really like it! The sound is good (but you need an amp) and the heads respond well. Yes this is a low cost small set - but it really does the job. I am not disappointed. I have played (in store) other sets, and this one compares pretty well for home practice or small venue use. I noticed online that it seemed a little flimsy as some played it - but this is sturdy. I think they must have been of a high pile carpet. This little deal isn't going to fall over. YES - the assembly directions aren't much help - but it isn't that difficult to set up either. GLAD I'm marching to my own beat!

Bought this set for my son for practice. Sound is very good except the ride cymbal is always barely audible. He uses it to practice with his band because the trap set is too loud in the room and with an amp this unit works just fine. Portability is great, he often moves it out in front of the TV to practice his timing without hooking up or turning it on. My expectations were not too high because of the low price but you can't beat what you get for your money.
