OVERVIEW

The supremely consistent kick pedal of legendary jazz and fusion drummer, Jojo Mayer.

With a design conceived over six years of tireless personal experimentation, the Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Pedal by Sonor is a carefully calibrated system that optimizes the linear translation of your foot movements and makes many adjustments expendable. It possesses the soul and feel of a vintage pedal reincarnated in the technology of a 21st century body.

Starting at its foundation, this pedal is engineered to fuse tradition and innovation. The drive cam and beater hub are streamlined into a single unit for low mass and calibrated for perfectly balanced strokes. A round cam design creates linear acceleration that is an advantage for many hybrid techniques.

The pedal offers a sensitivity that borders on intuition. An elongated and smooth footboard adds more leverage to the stroke and allows extended range of movement for heel toe and sliding techniques. Ballistic fiber strap minimizes inertia of the drive system and offers a quicker and smoother response than chain or solid drives. For those who prefer the strength and feel of chain, the pedal can easily be retrofitted with a double chain.

A revolutionary quick, self-mount affixes the pedal with a single motion, while the clamp adjusts to all hoop thicknesses. Magnetic spring dock secures spring during transportation that dramatically extends the life of the spring. In additional, standard allen screws are metric items that can be obtained at every good hardware store. No need to special order replacement screws any longer.

For the traveling percussionist, this pedal also easily folds into a compact size with the click of a button. Compact Tarpaulin style pedal bag makes bulky carrying cases obsolete. Includes shoulder strap.

Ok so I have reviewed several pedals on here, the last being the Tama Speed Cobra compared to the Pearl Demon. I play, practice and perform 18 to 20 hrs a week so I have ample time to try new products as they come out. In my review of the Speed Cobra I eluded to the fact that it played similar to the old Ludwig Speed Kings which is a great thing. The Jojo pedal takes this concept 3 steps further and he has created the ultimate vintage feel pedal with modern construction and engineering. That being said here are a few points buyers should consider:

If you are looking for a pedal with effortless motion, minimal tweaking, unbelievable control, and ease of setup, this is definitely the pedal for you. If on the other hand, you are looking for a pedal with tons of power, and extreme speed I would suggest the Pearl Demon. This is not a speed metal pedal but rather for the player who wants master complex kick drum rhythms.

I now own 6 pedals which include a Yamaha Flying Dragon double, DW 9000. Trick Pro V, Axis Long board, Tama Speed Cobra and this Jojo Perfect Balance. All these pedals have advantages in certain playing conditions. I still favor the Speed Cobra for live performances because I feel it gives the best of both worlds in playing power and control, however the Jojo pedal is my new standard in the studio not only for ease of playing but it's extremely QUIET. No pedal noise at all. This is one pedal I would highly recommend to any studio musician or drummer looking to improve their kick drum playing technique. Overall in the top 3 pedals on the market.

Worked and felt great till it broke after 2 years of use. Too much force applied to only a single brace arm. Perhaps if you never moved it and kept it on the same drum it would last longer. But then what is the point of the folding function? Also, it only works on a flat surface. It will not function properly on a carpeted floor.

This pedal is exactly what i have been looking for. I had to use a different pedal at a rehersal and it felt horrible after i have already been using the Perfect Balance pedal. Buy it! I would pay twice the price if i had to.

Comments about Sonor Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Single Bass Drum Pedal with Gig Bag:

Recently, I have revamped my playing style and have decided to infuse big band and jazz drumming with heavy rock drumming. I wanted a versatile pedal I could rely on that would hold up and give me the versatility I need for the many genres I play.

I have played Taye, Network, Pearl, Gibraltar, and Axis pedals and finally this one. This one is the best fell I've ever felt in a pedal. It's expensive, yes, but well worth it. It's at first glance difficult to use but the self mounting system, clamp adjustment, and all other features are easy as pie when you get the know how of how to adjust it down.

Go try one of these today! I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Sonor Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Single Bass Drum Pedal with Gig Bag:

I have owned Axis, DW 5000 and 9000, Mapex Falcons, Iron Cobras, Eliminators, and now this pedal.

This pedal is smooth, and it really makes your foot feel like its floating and works with your foot not against it. People always said the power was lost in the pedal, and that's not the case at all

The ONLY negative is the beater, for me the white felt just feels weird (I'm not an old school drummer). It does sound good being recorded but I prefer a wood beater on it

Comments about Sonor Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Single Bass Drum Pedal with Gig Bag:

I tried one of these out when I was looking for a new pedal recently. I have to say, I was very disappointed in this pedal, in particular.

My first problem with it was the clamp. Yes, it has one of the single-motion, self clamping mechanisms, but the adjustment location for it is so poorly placed and inconvenient that it becomes frustrating just to set it.

The ability to break the pedal down to a more compact size is pretty cool. Not at all necessary, but pretty cool. The problem with this design is that the tolerances seem too broad for the swivel assembly. When using the pedal, the entire post rocks back and forth, because the swivel doesn't latch tight enough.

Other than the rocking post, the pedal actually plays very well. It's very responsive, but not made for powerful playing. Not as responsive as the DW 9000 I bought instead, but it's up there. The simplistic design and look is great, as well.

I would like to see them relocate the adjustment screw, and either fix the swivel mechanism, or get rid of it. Then make it a little more robust, and they'd have one all around killer pedal on their hands.

Comments about Sonor Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Single Bass Drum Pedal with Gig Bag:

It's a very lightweight feeling pedal and very responsive and quick; it does exatly what your foot does. It would make a great jazz drummer's pedal where finesse and dynamics instead of a lot of force and power are used. It's a quiet pedal too, the only slight sound comes from the spring.
It starts with a low footboard position that is kind of odd feeling but slightly adjustable. It is a much more dynamic pedal than I'm used to and will take some practice to get used to the much lighter feel.
It seems the strap is a thin strip of rubber which stretches easily and the pedal bottoms out if playing too hard; don't know how long the strap will hold up before needing replaced (can see making my own from a vacuum cleaner belt or nylon strap of some kind). It's definitely not a hard rock, power pedal like the Pearl Demon pedal.
I'm not a gigging drummer and don't take my pedal too many places so the fold-up feature is nice but irrelevant for me.
In all it's a great pedal, it's very smooth and responsive. But it seems a bit over-priced.

This pedal is very smooth, quiet and quick. It looks kinda of cheap, especially the rubberized strap. Not sure how well it will hold up under heavy playing. I think this would make a great pedal for jazz players. The most dissappointing aspect of the pedal is the pedal height. It is kind of low so if you like your pedal high then forget it. If you want to do heel toe it may not work for you depending on your technique.

Comments about Sonor Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Single Bass Drum Pedal with Gig Bag:

I am biased as Jojo Mayer's Secret Weapons... video helped me so much after an elbow surgery, he is just the technique-master-genius. I still use (love and swear by) his signature sticks. Anyway, I have playing on a Pearl Demon Drive (double)as my primary pedal. A great(but overly expensive) pedal. However, I am not a DB drummer at heart, so I was looking for a new single kick pedal.

That said, the first look at the pedal I was underwhelmed. I saw it in the store on a counter display and I thought it was just some new Sonor prototype. The simple polished metal footboard made it seem unfinished and the strap drive looked chinsy to me. Shows what I know.

Then I noticed it was Jojo's and I was surprised. I had come in pretty much set on picking up the single Tama Speed Cobra but this was a possible game changer.

I spent a half hour in the store with the Perfect balanced and I was amazed. It is the best pedal I have ever used. It responds to even the smallest of motion. It reminds me a lot of the old Speed
king but somehow updated and more responsive.

The push button fold/set up is genius and makes set up that much easier.

If you are a sigle kick player, this is the last kick pedal you will ever need.

Comments about Sonor Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Single Bass Drum Pedal with Gig Bag:

Ok, so I went over to my music shop to compare (side-by-side) a *few* pedals. -> Tama Iron & Speed Cobra, Dw 5000 & 9000, Pearl Eliminator & Demon Drive, Ludwig Atlas Pro, and this bad boy. Note that they were all single pedals.

This is the order that I have ended up with, based solely on feel, smooth-ivity, and control. 1) Sonor Jojo, 2) Dw 9000, 3) Ludwig Atlas Pro, 4) Tama Speed Cobra, 5) Pearl Eliminator, 6) Dw 5000, 7) Tama Iron Cobra, 8) Pearl Demon Drive.

Another thing is that I have my spring tension below the *average* drummer. I like to work for my strokes, but to bounce back quick and sweetly.

This pedal does it, but see it like this; When I held the beater ON the head, and then let go, it went fully down, 4/5th back up, back down to *the middle* and then wobbled about for 1-2 seconds.

What this means is that you get an awesome kick back, but past that nada, nothing, niet.

I would heavily and super-duper-bly recommend this pedal, but the one itch is that for metalheads who crank the spring WAAYYYYYY high, look away, because you'll end up throwing it off a cliff.
