OVERVIEW

A cocktail kit for the modern era.

Sonor's Martini SE Shell Pack is a diminutive kit that enables a player to fit their acoustic jazz bossa grooves into the tightest of venues. Cross-laminated, 9-ply poplar shells output punchy tone with ample resonance. A steel snare drum provides those crisp, round tones with the ring you've come to love.

Triple-flange hoops will endure all the rimshots you can dish out, while Tune-Safe lugs ensure that the tuning stays in place. The Martini kit comes with an 14" x 12" kick (with mount and riser), 8" x 8" tom, 13" x 10" floor tom and a 12" x 5" steel snare.

Cymbals and hardware sold separately.

Some of the reviewers herein hit the nail on the head when describing this drum Sonor Martini.

On mine, I replaced the batter heads on all 4 pieces with Remo Fiberskyn Diplomats. The original Remo UX drum heads sound just fine (when tuned properly).
With the Fiberskyns though, the bass and toms sound the best when they are low pitched-tuned (but NOT floppy or too loose).
The drums have incredible attack (because of the cross-laminating plies in the construction).
They remind me (to my ears) of high-end Brady Drums constructed from Jarrah-wood.

I also replaced the front bass drum head with a Fiberskyn Diplomat, scrubbed the Remo logo off with Acetone (while wearing rubber gloves), and added a custom-made vinyl logo (see photo below).
The sparkle wrap has visual appeal to it that is unmatched by any other; it's unique.
I bought the Turquoise Galaxy Sparkle. With the right lighting, the sparkle jumps out, no matter what color lighting is hitting it. The Champagne Galaxy Sparkle is equally stunning (I've seen / tested in a competitor music store in Euclid, OH). Also note that on the Sonor website, it states that the Martini kits are "Special Edition Series" so, get one now before they become only a memory.

As far as the loudness of these drums, all I can say is a true bebop jazz combo-kit drummer will play as loud as they need to play with bandmates in a bebop jazz setting (NOT overpowering) the bandmates. You should've learned this remedial concept when taking drum lessons.
While you're at it, consider a lightweight maple drumstick i.e. Promark Jazz Cafe Maple (or similar).
Musicians Friend has given me the best deals I've ever experienced while purchasing from an online retailer.

I love this kit overall. Replaced the stock heads and can get a tight, satisfying sound (you're not gonna sound like Bonham or Russ with this rig, duh!). However, the snare proved to be the weak link. Mine just would not stay in tune for any length of time and the strainer constantly needed adjustment (throw-off is super-cheap). After 6 months I ditched it but I still love the rest of the shells an for the price I'm still very satisfied (my snare may have just been a dud, I dunno).

Comments about Sonor Martini 4-Piece Shell Pack:

First off, the shipping time for this thing was incredible. So don't expect much waiting around. In fact, don't expect hardly any time at all to have to wait before getting to groove on this kit. Right out of the box, the most striking feature was its appearance. The galaxy turquoise sparkle looks absolutely stunning. After easy unboxing, the drums were very easy to set up and tune. The tom tom, floor tom, and bass drum all have a great amount of lift to reach tall players. The bass drum riser, mount, and legs were all easy to install and give it an awesome, retro look while remaining super sturdy. It hasn't budged an inch! When tuning the drums, keep in mind that the smaller the drum, the more melodic it will be; it will create more of a note while larger drums create more of a thud. It was very easy to tune, and tune well for that matter. The overtones are not overbearing at all and it's quite simple to tune the drums in a specific key. They sound incredible, giving a warm, vibrant tone. And don't let the small size fool you. The sound the kit puts out is definitely a bigger bite than its bark. The snare pops like a firecracker, the bass drum thuds smoothly, but still gives more of a note in its tone, and the toms contrast each other perfectly. This set would be perfect for several different applications, primarily including jazz, funk, hip-hop, fusion, and swing. Or even if you're just looking for a small kit for an apartment, club, or street, this will surpass your expectations. Amazing little kit from Sonor. And such a great price, too! I have no complaints about the Martini kit at all. Just in love with it all around!

Comments about Sonor Martini 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I've had this set for a couple weeks, so this is my initial impression of the set.
Out of the box, this set has a beautiful finish that pictures can't do justice--simply stunning. It was quick to put together and get to playing.
The small drums offer a very tonal experience. The tuning of the drums on this is important and are what make the set as fun as it is. The compact format not only make the drums easy to move around; I've found that this makes the set easy play around on with more speed as well and everything is always in reach. Rolls on any of the drums are so easy and sound great without much effort. The drums are responsive as well as dynamic. I haven't had a chance to try some upgraded heads yet, but the ones included are not bad.

The size does not compromise the volume of the set too much. It is important to note that the smaller drums (especially with the 8" tom and the 14" kick) call for more tonal drumming and will not work as well for genres like classic rock and hard rock.

I plan on doing another review after I've had a few months with it, but as of now this set has been a very rewarding purchase. It is simply a lot of fun to play and sounds so cool and unique.

Comments about Sonor Martini 4-Piece Shell Pack:

First thing I did was told my fellow band mates "No laughing at my new drums!", but, to a man, these very seasoned musicians were nothing but complimentary of the huge, tight sound of the Sonor Martini kit! I did change out the top stock heads with G2 heads on the toms and a coated pinstripe on the snare! I put a kickport in the front kick head, and on the batter side, I used a black Kevlar marching snare head that had a great, low sound when thumped, as I held the unmounted head in my head to check for tone! As far as mic placement for the outside wedding, I used a cheap Cad Kick mic in the kickport and mounted a Cad condenser mic above the 13" floor tom to capture both it, and the 16" thicker crash that I use for the ride with this fantastic set! The finish is incredible (Champagne Sparkle) under the lights, and the only thing I'm wondering about, and I'll need to ask the folks in the crowd... "Does this kit make my knees look big?"!!!!! Thanks Sonor & Musician's Friend for delivering (Free, by the way!) BIG on this Little drum kit!!!!

Comments about Sonor Martini 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I ended up returning this kit. From the reviews I read and the videos I watched, I thought this kit would have a much bigger sound. It just was not loud enough. I couldn't get a good sound out of the kick, even with replacing the head with a really thick Remo batter (used for marching band bass drums). There was just no punch to it. If you're a going to Buy this kit, be sure that you're only going to be using it for very small venues. It would probably also be great for semi acoustic gig. Even for an acoustic-type show, I think you'd still need to mic the kick.

Aside from being very quite, this kit is stunning. It really was well constructed and sturdy. The hardware had a good weight.

I get a lot of compliments on the kit.especially the kick drum. But you have to change the head. I put a Remo dot snare head on it. Cut a 4in. Hole on the front. And mic it. Sounds like a 22in. Kick drum.

Tight and Crisp. Needed a small kit for my beach rock trio and this kit fit the bill. Fit and finish was nice. A little breaking in and the tone is really nice. You can switch out the heads and adjust to your style. I was actually surprised at how good and snappy the snare was. If you mic it you can certainly play larger gigs. Its a fun little kit. I threw in a couple of straight stands for a ride and crash but you could add a dogbone on the center mount and save some space. The blue kit looked better in person than I expected. For the money its a great set up.

I was pleasantly surprised by this kit. I was looking for a smaller kit for playing in smaller venues. My main gig is with an 80's cover band and I wasn't sure if this kit would cut it. I changed all of the heads (the ones that come with the kit do not do the instrument justice) and miked the kick drum and got descent tone and punch out of it. It didn't quite sound like my 22 inch bass drum, but it did the job. The toms sing and project nicely. Even on heavy rock tunes! This set is also a great conversation starter. I always get people telling me what a beautiful kit it is and how surprised they are by the big sound I get out of them.

Upon removal of this kit from the box, I've noticed its rich and colorful finish. I'm not a big fan of wrap around finishes but I was astounded and amazed by this one. If you're wanting a punchy and fat tone, stock head aren't recommended for this kit; however, I'd strongly advise Aquarian or Evans heads.
